i tried signing up for one, but it said it's still in beta phase or something like that... does that mean it's experimental? how would one go about getting one then?

gmail accounts are by invite only - as far as I know. Over the summer, I believe google had a link on its homepage where anyone could download gmail, but I think that was just a trial experiment. For now, if you have a friend who has gmail, he or she will automatically have 100 invitations to send out to their friends. I think it's a pretty neat way to spread it around...

I have a gmail account with a few 100 invites (was involved in the initial beta testing before PR).

PM me if you would like an invite. :)

I was invited to open a g-mail account but I wasn't sure what the benefits were. I mean, is it that good?

Depends on what you need or use e-mail for. It's really good for moving files that are around 10mb and you get over 2gb of space if you need it. It does have awesome spam filtration.

Downside is that your e-mail is electronicly scanned for keywords that trigger adsense. But it's never read or handled by humans.

Other than that its just another pop e-mail provider.

I like g-mail. I recommend getting the gmail notifier.. it sits in your system tray and turns color when you receive an email.
You can also sign up now if you have a cell phone with text messaging.

i use gmail, its very easy to navigate, there is a colossal amount of free storage, u will never have to delete a message again, literally, when u read something u "archive" it, and thats it, u have it forever, other pros include, it automatically saves address, when forward emails, there is a simple one click name entry, which is very handy, and the gmail notifier is cool too, it tells u in real time if u get an email, weather you online or not ! i too have invites if anybody would like one to try it, (by pm) i couldn't recommend it enough

I love my gmail account. My neice invited me and now I have a couple of accounts, one for family and one for my online buddies. I like the IM feature. It's a good deal.

I was invited to use Gmail a long time ago, during the period of time when Gmail invites were so in demand that people were selling them on eBay. I absolutely love it, best email client ever! (I have several, though I mainly stick to one in particular.) If anyone wants an invite, I have 98 to spare! Just drop me a PM (don't forget to include your current email addy).

By the way, you should be able to get the Gmail Notifier from the Gmail site -- as well as for use with Firefox. Your best bet is to google the term.

I have a gmail account, but where can you find the invites? I want to invite someone. I remember once I saw that I had a few, but now I can't find them.

They should be down on the lower lefthand side. It's a small box.

Thanks, i just realised that I'm stuck in basic HTML mode (so the invites don't show up) If I try to switch to standard view, I just get a blank page. Anyone know what this is about? I'm using firefox 1.5.

I love Gmail. It's by far the best email client I have.. And I have quite a few. I love that I can google my messages... When I go to a contact, all the correspondence is listed. Google talk is wonderful. A lot of my friends aren't allowed to use IM at work.. so google talk lets us get around that. I have invites to spare as well...

Hmmm, not sure why that is. I use Firefox and I never have any issues with it. Try switching it in IE and then pull it up in Firefox, maybe.

I have a question. I can't figure out how to forward a message to multiple contacts. In Yahoo you can click on Address Book from the page showing the message that is waiting to be forwarded and then add all the contacts you want to forward the message to. I don't see anything like that with Gmail. Can anyone help me out?

I had to go into Contacts click on the address's I wanted to send the message to and then click on Compose which added all my contacts to a blank page. I then had to copy the addresses from the blank page and then paste all the contacts to the message I wanted to forward. I hope this makes sense. :undecide:

Please Help!!!

I have about 300 invites (multiple accounts). PM if anyone wants one. Only bad thing about gmail now is that it's @googlemail instead.

It's only for new people signing up so if you signed up and got a @gmail.com email then you still keep it.

I think they changed it because some other company had already used the name 'gmail'. :)

I got it right in time, then. I prefer @gmail than @googlemail.

Here is the dirt from google in the UK...

[The story behind the new "Google Mail" name

You may have noticed the Google Mail logo. We are changing our service's name in the UK. Starting October 19, 2005, all new users will have @googlemail.com addresses. Don't worry, though – all messages are being sent and delivered as before.

Why the name change then?

We have been involved in a dispute regarding the Gmail trademark in the UK. Another company has claimed rights to the Gmail name. We have tried to resolve this dispute through negotiations, but our efforts have failed.

We are still working with the courts and trademark office to protect our ability to use the Gmail name, but in the meantime, we want you to have an email address you can rely on.

We are dedicated to offering the best email service to our users. Our email service stays the same no matter what the logo is or what follows the @ symbol. This change lets our team focus their time on continuing to bring you excellent service.

What this means for our users

Do I need to do anything?
No. Although the name is changing, your email service remains the same. To sign in, you can go to the same page as before, or you can now also visit http://mail.google.com/mail
When will you start offering @googlemail.com addresses? When will this change take place?
Starting October 19, 2005, the Gmail service will be renamed Google Mail in the UK. We will no longer issue new @gmail.com addresses. All new addresses will be @googlemail.com addresses.
What if I invite someone? Will they also have to create an @googlemail.com address?
That depends on where your invitation recipients are located. If they are in a country where we issue Gmail addresses, then they will get an @gmail.com address. But from the UK, you will only be able to send Google Mail invitations. If your recipient is also in the UK, he or she will only be able to get an @googlemail.com address.
What if I'm a UK user who already has a Gmail address? Will I also need to change that address?
No, this change doesn’t affect existing Gmail addresses. For now, our plan is only to issue @googlemail.com addresses to new users. Trust that we will do the best we can to offer all our users a reliable and consistent email experience.

I like using the RSS feed into the Google home page so you can browse the first 5 or 6 new emails from your home page. It's a really coiol feature that Google has if you have an email account with them. Very user friendly and FAST!!!
