View Full Version : "Apocalypse Now" Reference?

When Locke and Fenry have their armory conversation about Locke being "one of the good ones", Fenry says that the Others' leader is "a great man, John...a brilliant man". This reminded me of the Dennis Hopper character's (photojournalist) description to Martin Sheen (Capt. Willard) of the maniacal Brando character (Col. Kurtz) in "Apocalypse Now". (Sorry...I don't have a copy to get the actual lines...) There were at least 2 other movie references in TFTR ("Say Anything" and "Midnight Cowboy"). Anyone else notice this? Could there end up being some similarities to Kurtz and whoever "He" is....

interesting references. There's an entire thread for "Say anything" references.

Yeah, I saw that fourth....Love your screen-name, BTW!!:)

I started the one for "Midnight Cowboy", but I hadn't seen anything on this one...Do you recall the scene I refer to?

Hey, HH...Here's some Dennis Hopper quotes from Apocolypse Now...is he talkin about Col. Kurtz...or "Him"...you decide!!

What are they gonna say about him? What are they gonna say? That he was a kind man? That he was a wise man? That he had plans? That he had wisdom? Bulls**t man!

Hey, man, you don't talk to the Colonel. You listen to him. The man's enlarged my mind. He's a poet-warrior in the classic sense. I mean sometimes he'll... uh... well, you'll say "hello" to him, right? And he'll just walk right by you. He won't even notice you. And suddenly he'll grab you, and he'll throw you in a corner, and he'll say, "do you know that 'if' is the middle word in life? If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you"... I mean I'm no, I can't... I'm a little man, I'm a little man, he's... he's a great man.

He likes you because you're still alive.

This is the way the f***ing world ends. Look at this f***ing s**t we're in man. Not with a bang, but with a whimper. And with a whimper, I'm fucking splitting, Jack.

[apologizing for severed heads adorning Kurtz's headquarters]
The heads. You're looking at the heads. Sometimes he goes too far. He's the first one to admit it.

Spooky, huh? Funny...Dennis Hopper's character's name was listed only as "Photo Journalist". Looks like Damon and Carlton are really having fun with their favorite films from the 70's and 80's..."Midnight Cowboy"..."Apocolypse"..."Star Wars"..."Jaws" (the Dharma shark?)...and "Say Anything". I think we'll see more nods to the classics.

I only wish Brando was still alive to play "Him".

"Hearts Of Darkeness", by Joseph Conrad. Great book BTW, it was the basis for Apocalypse Now.

I think it was a tip-off about Michael in that Kurtz went up the river with the best intentions and went insane. But that's just me.

I don't think Mike's insane at all...In his mind, he's doing the only thing he can do to get Walt back safely.

But it could be a tip-off to "Him" being insane...A genius...but insane, nonetheless...Much like poor ol' Col. Kurtz.

Well, that Apocalypse Now scene rehashes t s eliot's The Hollow Men.

Interesting trivia, too, for those who don't know. Midnight Cowboy, when it was first released, was rated X and the was the first and only X-rated movie to win an Academy Award for best picture.

Oh...this thread is so gonna get moved...but I don't care!! Here's some more interesting Awards trivia:

In May 1979, Apocolypse Now became the first film to be awarded the Palme D'Or at The Cannes Film Festival before it had actually been completed. Because the Cannes jury was unable to come to a unanimous vote, this film shared the Best Picture prize with Blechtrommel, Die (1979) ("The Tin Drum").

Also, the "This is the way the world ends...with a whimper" line from Hopper was taken directly from T.S. Elliot's poem The Hollow Men. A poem that was written AFTER Elliot read "Heart of Darkeness"...which the film is loosely based on.

At any rate...Glad to see LOST takes some of its cues from great movies like Apocolypse...with the literary refences that have us running to the library to read The Fourth Policeman and Watership Down.

Thanks for the input from everybody...and to you particularly ATOR for the quotes...that was the scene that came to mind when I saw the Locke/Fenry conversation. "The Demented Genius": Is this what we may have? Does Zeke fit this bill? Or is he really "no one"?

I especially like the "goes too far" comment...sounds pretty "vengeful" to me....:eek2:

Yeah, a shout out to Dustin Hoffman almost getting hit by a taxi and yelling, "I'm walking here!". Good catch HH.

Great thread - I also remember Charlie spouting off that someone was running through the jungle like "bloody Col. Kurtz" in one epi (think it was season one). Just another observation/reference to "Apocalypse"...I love all the movie references as most of them are my favs too!
