Ive recently heard of this theory.. that the hatch was a made in world war 2 and is a bunker
thats why it has quarantine on the front. When Jack went in his key to the gun box started getting a magnetic sense towards something, This I believe is a nuclear bomb. Desmond stated that the man that brang him down here; Kevin. Said to him that he was just saving the world What if the nuclear bomb was put there for safety. So if any intruders had broken in and killed the men/women in charge of pressing the button they would be blown up because they wouldnt of had a clue when or why they had to press the button every 108 mintues. I would be quite dissapointed if this was the theory to the hatch would you?

its logical but i think it was built by Dharma, can imagine there being something to destroy the hatch in case anyone found it like entering the numbers so some kind of bomb didnt go off.

The orientation video suggested it was for a type of research, rather than a method of protection? While it's plausible, I don't see that being the 'answer'.

Why would the key get attracted to a nuclear bomb? Whatever it is, the thing is magnetic, and that's explained in the Orientation video, as Dr Candle says the hatch was set up to examine the electromagnetic nature of this area of the island. However, it is possible that something nuclear did happen down there (possibly the incident?), as Sayid says he hasn't seen concrete poured over everything in the way it is in the hatch since Chernobyl.

Mmmm... that does remind me of what I first thought when I saw those canisters covered in concrete- it is unlikely, but for a moment I considered some kind of nuclear waste storage system.
