At the Supermarket there was this little booth kind of like a picture booth, but instead it played Mighty Mouse cartoons for a quarter. So while mom was in the checkout line we could watch little Mighty Mouse clips.
Also growing up in the city, we use used to have this truck that came around with the whip-it ride on it. It had a couple of little cars and went in an oval, but would whip around the ends of the track. That only cost a quarter too.

Superman 06-06-2006, 03:00 PM what were those things called that were shaped like spiders but they were made of a sticky substance, and when you threw them at a wall, it would slowly "walk/crawl" down the wall as each of the legs sticked and unsticked?

Ooh, I know what you're talking about...
I used to always want one of those from the .50 machines... Why? I don't know, they just seemed cool... lol..
The only thing is that they would get really gross and hairy and dirty if you dropped them on the floor.
Oh, I just thought of something else (Not sure if that has been mentioned; it probably has)
Koosh balls. YAY.
Aurora10 06-06-2006, 05:19 PM KOOSHBALLS! Those were funny.

More to come I am sure...

Oh mainly just visited friends and family. I lived there for ten years so there's never enough time when we're there.
I always did the laser shows here (Seattle). I think they still do them, but I'm too lazy to get a babysitter to go. On the weekends, they do The Wall at 10 and Dark Side of the Moon at midnight. Maybe it's the other way around I don't remember...
Ok... what about Buster Brown Shoes?

sunshinekitty1 06-08-2006, 05:39 PM Does anyone else remember the Punky Brewster cartoon? She had this magical creature friend that lived on the other side of the rainbow. It's name was Glomer or Gleamer, something like that.
Also, anyone remember the cartoon Kidd Video? This teenage rock band somehow got trapped in another dimension and became cartoons. Cousin Oliver from the Brady Bunch was on the show.

Yup, that's it! I'm very vague on most of it, but I recall watching it with my brother when we waited for the school bus to pick us up, so I would have been probably 5 or 6. "No Gnus is Good Gnus" is what I remember most clearly, though. And something with speed reading. And I'm very sure that was where I learned the "Name Game" song. ("Donna Donna bo bonna bananafana fo fonna...")
ETA: Omigosh, there's a fansite. (http://www.tgscoaster.com/) LOL! Yes, the Speed Reader is so coming back to me. I learned to read when I was 4, so I thought Speed Reader was cool. lol.

It's just one of those things that makes little random impressions, but it may also be from Lorne Greene's New Wilderness. I watched them both, IIRC.
Oh, and for some reason Bill Cosby's Picture Pages scared the hell out of me. I have NO idea why.

Hey is speed reader the guy who would put his finger on the book and move it through the lines quickly to show how fast he was reading? I don't remember anything about this show, but I vaguely rememeber a speed reader and I think he used to do the finger thing.
Oh and who remembers Solid Gold? What did they do on that show, was it just random celebrities coming to sing or was it like star search?

Random celebrities lipsyncing, IIRC. And I was SO going to be a Solid Gold dancer when I grew up.
RamessesIX 06-09-2006, 06:09 PM Choose Your Own Adventure books
Ranger Rick magazine - I recently found to my inexpressible delight that this is still being published!
Super Friends
The Herculoids and Space Ghost
Mattingly, Winfield, and Randolph slugging for the Yankees.
And G.I. Joe, of course! Toys, comics, and TV cartoon.
Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark trading cards
Someone mentioned Dark Shadows - that might be my all-time favorite show, although I, too, saw it in reruns. I liked Quentin, too. You really saw his character mature and progress over the years and the actor had such phenomenal screen presence. It was one of the more believable "villain gradually becomes hero" storylines I can recall.
Someone also mentioned Voltron and I would add Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets. The former, in particular, was surprisingly sophisticated, which I appreciated as a kid. At the end of every episode, the narrator updated you on how long the Earth had to survive if the Argonauts failed in their mission.
Did anyone else watch The Tomorrow People and The Third Eye on Nickelodeon?
Atari 2600 is a total nostalgia trip for me. I'd be buying the old games off eBay like crazy if I had anyplace to put them. A year or two ago, I downloaded an emulator which basically makes my computer an Atari 2600. There are tons of hobbyists who homebrew Atari games and make them available. (One of my favorites is "This Planet Sucks". :) ) I learned how to do it out of interest but don't have the time (or, to be honest, a great idea) to create my own. It's interesting, the constraints that those game developers had to work within. 128 bytes (yes, that's bytes) of scratchpad memory and a 60 frame per second refresh rate with processor speed on the order of kHz. They literally had to count the clock cycles between screen sweeps! And still made some damn fun games.

OMG I forgot about the solid gold dancers!! Yeah it would fun to be one those women dancing away :) I can't believe Solid Gold was all lipsynching, why did people want to watch that? (Then again britney spears and a host of others lipsynch when they perform so I guess it's not that big of a surprise!)
myothercarisflight815 06-09-2006, 08:25 PM OMG I forgot about the solid gold dancers!! ... why did people want to watch that?
You mean you blocked it out. Remember the gold lamee outfits? Icky! And why? Well, if I remember right... it was on on Sunday nights or afternoon or something when there was nothing else on. Before Cable. Unless you just couldn't get enough of Marilyn McCoo. (and remember poor Andy Gibb too...)

Are you talking about the one where people did impersonations of celebrities, i remember a show where people pretended to be Michael Jackson doing the moonwalk or duran duran, or tina turner etc. I think the Michael Jackson guy was quite good and he went pretty far. Don't remember the name though, star search, solid gold, and this show all seem like one big jumble in my memory.

It was both.

- I smell a rat, and the wind is comng from your direction...
- the devil made me buy this dress
- the devil made me buy this dress

Love it! Did you know that in 1970, the Flip Wilson Show was #2 in the ratings? He was great!
Other shows out that time were Marcus Welby, Gunsmoke, Hawaii Five-O. I hate to admit how old I am, but when I was born, the #1 show was Beverly Hillbilies. Holy crap I feel old now! :ermm:

I think mine were red. Good spelling of the noise! I seem to remember they were discontiniued because they chipped. (at least that's what my parents told me) I mean, they were two hard acrylic spheres whose only job was to keep hitting each other. Bound to have shards cracking off eventually. Like God's Tom said, a piece probably chipped off and flew into someone's eye. But it was such mindless fun!

miss emme 06-24-2006, 09:13 PM Yeeaahh!! Drive-in's. We had one here for about two years and I went with my son and another woman with her's and watched a couple of movies a few years back. Us moms sat in one car the kids in the other. I remember my sons reaction that night. "Wow mom this is so cool" I had to laugh.

They sure were cool. When we were real little and went with our parents, we'd go in our pj's because we'd fall asleep on the way home and all they would have to do would be to drop us in bed. When we were teenagers, a couple of kids would always hide in the trunk when we first went in so we wouldn't have to pay more and then we'd pool the "saved" money and buy junk food. I miss those days......

(Oh! has anyone mentioned doctors making housecalls?)
Yes, I was pretty young but I remember house calls..
How about these...
Cesar Chavez and the lettuce/grape boycott. Lettuce and grapes were not allowed in our house for some time. My mother had us sewing pot-holders to raise money for the cause, and I was pretty young but remember picketing on a bridge with the family. Ahh, family outings..
Gas crisis and rationing in the 70's - odd/even license plates determined what day you could get gas.
Concert for Bangla Desh
The Watergate hearings
Nixon and his sweaty upper-lip

God's tom 06-25-2006, 03:12 PM LOL! Sorry about that! The way you worded it, I was thinking you meant the old blackout drills they used to have. (Hey! Put out that Light!)

You had me thinking you were at least in your 70s! :rotflmao:

LostIslandBaby 07-11-2006, 03:55 PM I forgot all about Jams! I think that is one style that should come back. So should Jelly shoes..does anyone remember having those?
I had jelly shoes in elementary and I hope they do not come back! They were first of all, unstylish. Second of all, very uncomfortable to wear. They mostly came in neon colors...that's all I have to say about that.
Liplocked 07-11-2006, 04:12 PM I was born in 56, so I guess my clearest earliest memories would be of the early 60s.
(Although I swear I remember looking out through the bars of my crib!)
I believe you Tom! I have vivid recolections of a city I left before my fifth birthday: Dad eating breakfast at 5am, Mum cleaning out the grate to set the fire in the morning, shelling peas into a collonder sat on the back doorstep, sharing the fear of my uncles dressing gown (hung on the back of the bedroom door) with my bedfellow his son, the weave on the plastic rug under the kitchen table, brown sauce on toast for breakfast (that's what my dad - my hero - ate), hiding from the Daleks behind our Grandmother's queen ann chair and watching Dr Who through the gap between her ankles... and more.
Daisies in the front garden, a pear tree in the street - boy was my cousin sick from eating the windfalls he picked off the road!
I can place my memories of a stay in a Manchester hospital to when I was only three. Stood in my cage-like bed watching the airplane lights low in the night sky over the airport. My dad made planes.
I'm currently 42. :)
Eep. Jelly shoes. I do remember having a yellow pair I wore on the beach... there was really no excuse at the age I was... 'cepting they were cheap and I was broke.
chellly 07-11-2006, 07:15 PM Jelly shoes! I was a kid when those came out. Not my favorite.....can you say smelly feet?
myothercarisflight815 07-11-2006, 07:50 PM Johnny's Dallas reminded me of....

Man, I haven't see that movie in AGES!
Baileysdad 07-12-2006, 10:56 AM Okay...two "Back in the Day/Feel Old" moments occurred in the last two days.
Had nine 12 and 13 year olds in the house...they were on XBOX 360 playing Halo...to see what they would do...I took out my very first Atari 2600 and Nintendo system...(yes I still have all of them) and they actually asked what they were...and then saw the game cartridges...and asked what they were...and they laughed...really hard...ugh.
Was taking the patrol car through a car wash and commented to my partner about the guy with the soapy brush.."Hey...that guy is a dead ringer for John Oats!"
Blank stare..."Who?"
"Hall and Oats...from the early 80's...the number one pop duo of all time..the guy with the mustache"
"Um..I was born in 1984....sorry old timer"..and then he laughed...really hard..
Double ugh....
God's tom 07-12-2006, 02:59 PM LOL! That's a killer!
I went into a music store once & they had some pimply faced teenager running the place.
I asked if they had the Beatles white album on CD, & he said he'd never heard of it!
myothercarisflight815 07-12-2006, 03:03 PM That's just wrong. I'll admit that I'm not sure what songs are on the White Album... but I know what it looks like...
miss emme 07-15-2006, 12:34 AM Ooooo here's a good one. I'm watching American Graffitti right now. Remember that movie? Hot cars cruisin' down the boulevard, everyone listening to Wolfman Jack. A very young Richard Dreyfuss and Ron Howard, Cindy Williams and l believe it was Harrison Ford's first movie. Susan Sommers was the mysterious blonde in the T-bird. Remember the two guys hooking up the rope to the axel of the cop car then taking off. Great show, good music

Aahhh..gee, forgot all about that stuff...wonder why...lol
Oh..there were certain lipsticks that worked really well with blacklight
Went to my parents house the other day and started routing around in a couple of boxes that I never took with me when I moved many, many years ago and found my skate key......hoping I'm not the only one who remembers skate keys....
LostIslandBaby 08-19-2006, 10:18 PM My suitemate at college had blacklights. That was back in the mid-90's. I don't know what state keys are though. What are they???
Southern Belle 08-19-2006, 10:43 PM Hip huggers...that really hugged your hips...not those x-rated ones out today...
Bell-Bottoms...that were true...bells...
The black lights...and the disco...and the white suits...and white boots...omg...did I say that out loud?
slflowers101 08-19-2006, 10:49 PM My suitemate at college had blacklights. That was back in the mid-90's. I don't know what state keys are though. What are they???
*thunk* that was my heart sinking
..ok..ahem..a few years back, roller skates were essentially a metal platform with wheels and were adjustable to accomodate the length of your feet, additionally, there were two little adjustable metal tab thingys that would help the fit on the side of your foot around the toes, and to loosen or tighten the tabs, you used a skate key. The skates were just for the bottom of your feet with a leather band that went around your ankle..you skated in your sneakers or whatever shoes you had.
*slowly makes her way to the rocking chair*
LostIslandBaby 08-19-2006, 10:53 PM Oh, skate keys. I thought you said state keys, lol. Well, I didn't know what skate keys were either, so...but that's because I just didn't know not because I'm like really young or anything:biggrin:
slflowers101 08-19-2006, 11:03 PM LOL...thanks for that, LIB..but you said you went to college in the mid 90's? ...I'm not going to say anything else...:lipsseal:
Wonder what a state key would be....

Fear the ghost of Clyde Tombaugh...
God's tom 08-25-2006, 04:13 AM Well - I dont give a rip what they say! As far as I'm concerned, Pluto's a planet!
(We need a constitutional amendment to protect the planets from activist astronomers!)
pug3323 08-25-2006, 10:51 AM one of my coworkers remarked yesterday that maybe they should have gotten rid of neptune.. since they cross orbits.. if neptune was a real planet it would have gotten pluto out of the way.. hehehe.
im still keeping pluto a planet in my head.. thankyouverymuch!

Actually, I read years ago that pluto is just a big ball of ice and they've been wanting to declassify it for a long time. If it's not technically a planet, then it's not a planet. *shrug*
God's tom 08-25-2006, 01:39 PM Well, technically, Jupiter isn't a planet either - it's a second sun that just never ignited - so where do they stop revising what we've been taught in school?
(I've always wondered if there are 9 more planets that are on the other side of the sun - but we just cant see them!)
PhillyGirl2873 08-25-2006, 02:19 PM I guess I just let the experts decide. I don't see anything wrong with revising what we've been taught as long as it's correct. But that's just the scientist in me I guess.

Like Marvel Comics' Counter-Earth? From Warlock and other '70s titles. I remember a great storyline in Fantastic Four when Counter-Earth was menaced by Galactus. I'll tell ya, back in the day, Fantastic Four was a great comic and Galactus had some major gravitas.
Was that the smoothest dragging of a thread back on topic or what?
PhillyGirl2873 08-25-2006, 06:09 PM Haha! Much love to both of you guys.
Back on topic...remember before computers, typing papers on word processors? Putting in footnotes and only being able to save up to 3 pages at a time before printing? Thank God for compters!
gusthepolarbear 08-25-2006, 06:14 PM personally i miss the carebears lol
LostIslandBaby 08-25-2006, 08:54 PM Remember the Apple II Computers...the ones that would go beep, beep...and if you don't input a certain set of numbers every 108 minutes, it will alert "system failure, system failure...?" Yeah, those were the good ole days:rolleyes:

Heck, I remember typewriters. I still remember the smell of white-out. When you made a typo, you had to unroll the page, apply white-out and try to roll it back so that newly typed text was vertically aligned with the rest of the line. Every flub was a judgment call -- is this important enough to a) retype the entire page, or b) use white-out and screw up the look of the page, or c) can I leave it and hope no one notices? If you got lucky and typed a lower-case 'o' when you really meant 'e', you could keep back-spacing and hitting 'e' several times, and it would at least be clear what you had meant. Although your paper would look like this, with random letters "bolded".
My senior year in HS, I had to do a final paper for AP History - mine was on Civil War POW camps - and my mom had just gotten access to a word processor at work. So she offered to type it up on it if I would write the paper out longhand. My teacher was astonished at the presentation quality - he had never seen its like before. I got an 'A' on the paper (even though some of the names were transcribed incorrectly because my handwriting was shaky by 3 AM the night before the due date) - although I'd like to think the content was at least as important.
If you were born after 1985 or so, you have no idea what I'm talking about, but what are you doing in this thread anyway? :)
IrishUnicorn 08-28-2006, 01:50 AM roller skates were essentially a metal platform with wheels and were adjustable to accomodate the length of your feet, The skates were just for the bottom of your feet with a leather band that went around your ankle..you skated in your sneakers or whatever shoes you had.
I had a pair of those. I remember them being very uncomfortable. But I don't remember having a key.
Back In My Day . . . (I'm in my mid twenties)
She-Ra and He-Man Ruled. I had the actions figures and the She-Ra costume, complete with the sword. And a metal t.v. tray. "For the honor of Greyskull." I still have episodes on tape.

You did not drink pop rocks and coke together.
:hide: (please don't judge me) New Kids On The Block, Vanilla Ice . . .

okay, now you're bringing back terrible memories... i had the kind of typewriter that had the automatic correction tape on it... you hit the button and it would go back how many times and white-out... unfortunately i broke it trying to replace the tape, and had to do it manually by placing the tape over the mistake and typing in the letter i wanted whited out... but i do remember not having any tape on me and then re-typing a whole page because the letters just slightly higher or lower than the original line bothered the crap out of me... and yep, i remember trying to over-type letters with other letters... so what if it's bolde |
