marblehead_johnson 08-23-2006, 07:45 AM These epi threads are there for those who want to chat about epis with UK fans, because we seem to be so far behind everyone else. Many of the equivalent dedicated episode threads on the Lage contain spoilers now. If you are from outside of the UK, or are/have been 'spoiled', please be aware that this is the latest episode here. Feel free to post, but please respect those here that haven't seen beyond S.O.S. Thank you.
Not a startling episode, but it kind of brought home the fact that the island is a special place that is healing people. As soon as Rose said that to Locke I was waiting for the point where she saw him in the wheelchair - she knows his secret.
Henry has Locke in knots over the button, and - Michaels back! Bit of a coincidence that he appears to Jack just as he's taunting the others? Where has he been? Did he ever find the Others? Zeke seemed pretty confident that they wouldn't be found.
Some speculation on the other boards that he's going to betray the Losties to get Walt back - surely not? Remember the conversation with 'Walt' on the computer - was michael lured there by the Others for this purpose?
Also the reveal that Eko is building himself a church as suggested elsewhere - seems its not just Rose and Bernard who are there for the duration.
PS Refreshing to hear Charlie call Bernard 'ber-nud' as opposed bur-narrrd', just one of those things I guess.
Vincent_the_dog 08-23-2006, 09:08 AM I thought it was a reasonable episode where a lot happened, but not much did if you know what I mean! There weren't any genuinely jaw-dropping moments (except maybe the reappearance of Michael although I have to admit that I did kind of expect it) but the reiteration that the island is somehow special in its healing powers (thought the meeting between Rose and Locke at the airport was neatly done), and Kate suddenly announcing to Jack about the medical hatch (which I have to say, was really beginning to annoy me!) along with the return of Michael seemed to be putting lots of the 'smaller' things in place in preparation for the big finale at the end of the series. So whilst it seemed a bit of a non-descript episode in a way, the odd things that were being revealed seemed to me, to be pieces being put together in order to set up a big story.
I have to say that there has been no other episode where I've found 'Henry Gale' as creepy as in this one though! The look on his face when Locke was hammering on the door trying to find out if he really had pushed the button or not was the most unnerving and creepy look I've seen EVER!! :eek2: To me, it was a look as if he was thinking 'well, my mission to unsettle Locke and make him question the button and the island is done'. It seems ever more clear I think, that 'Henry' was purposely caught to infiltrate the camp and cause friction both between the members of the group, and individually too. It seems very much like he knows the kind of people they are and particularly with Locke, knows exactly how to push his buttons so to speak.
I'll await next week with great eagerness......

I wondered whether Michael had actually been returned by the Others, rather than him just choosing this moment to reappear. Maybe the Others found Michael when he ran off, as opposed to Michael finding them. It occurred to me that Michael was returned to Jack and Kate in response to Jack yelling that they (the Losties) had Henry and would trade him. I also wonder if Jack had forgotten about Michael as he only seemed to think that Henry could be traded for Walt - and that's why I think the Others may have called his (Jack's) bluff by returning Michael.
Jack choosing Kate to go with him was interesting (I wonder why Sayid wouldn't go with him?), although I guess the writers would have had a harder time putting Jack and Sawyer that close together in the net!!!
Bluemorbo 08-23-2006, 05:37 PM For the first time in a while (excluding Dave and Maternity Leave), I've found the flashback from this episode not only more interesting than on-island events, but just in general. I mean, whilst I think Jack's a good character on the island, his 'back story' isn't the most interesting. Nor is Kate's, probably because we've seen their stories told in various other shows (brilliant at his job with an unapproving father, misunderstood yet strong willed woman on the run). However, despite the fact I expected Rose/Bernard's flashback to be 'boring' (for Lost :P), it was actually quite good. It's a shame (more so Bernard) they don't feature more, because I quite like Bernard.
Locke's reaction has been interesting, especially with him finally remembering the map at the end. Which obviously means he (alone or otherwise) is going to go investigate '?'.
Micheal's return should make for a good story too. I mean, the question is, what did he find? Did he see Walt? How has he survived? And so on. I know these answers (I'm a spoiler fool), so I won't go too far.
I'm surprised no one told Jack (or any of the other survivors) about the Staff. I mean, although Kate's still...frustrated about being left out of the 'circle', what about Clare? Jack won't spend 24-7 in the hatch (there's Locke, AL and Sayid - who seems to have disappeared?), so I'm surprised Jack doesn't know about it. Still, there was the line Charlie said to..Michael I think, about the polar bear. So I guess people don't talk as much as you'd expect!

That is a definite. Henry has really made this season. Could you imagine what it would have been like without him? Anyway, he's played the role perfectly, keeping everyone guessing (even the viewers), who never know what is truth and fabrication. Which I guess is his 'mission', or at least part of it.
As for Kate/Jack going back to the line, I think that's to build on the issues of trust between them as well as build on the tension between them. But, I agree, it is perfectly reasonable to think Michael was returned by the Others to Jack et. al. in exchange instead of Walt.
I guess we'll find out next week!
I have to say, the last few episodes have been so good. I love Lost
whispervixen 08-23-2006, 07:42 PM The only parts of this episode I found interesting were the scenes between Jack and Kate. Being a fan of those two I was grinning from ear to ear when they were caught in the net... and in the last scene when Jack said "I'm not". But, I won't talk about that.. it's been discussed to death in the jater couch ;).
luv me_ luv lost 08-24-2006, 06:45 AM I found the flashback ok it wasn't that bad. The only part i didn't much like was the net scene it was a bit pointless, i still don't get why Jack shot the rope and not Kate. I think the Others took Michael back to Jack and Kate, mayeb they have an other to keep guard of the 'line' to make sure they don't cross it.

I hadn't noticed that any of the other times I've seen this episode, but I was delighted to hear it this time.
Maybe it was re-edited for UK ears?

I think it was. Because once i don't know what episode it is he calls Aaron 'air-ron' not 'aron' i think i heard that can someone confirm it?
marblehead_johnson 08-24-2006, 02:29 PM i'm not sure what the proper etiquette is in that situation, but when you talk to foreign people do you pronounce their name in their own native tongue? I work with a David and a Thomas who are both french, and I tend to call them Dav-eed and Tom-a when I'm talking to them in French and dayvid and tomuss when i'm talking to them in English.
Anyway, i digress. I just liked hearing him called it the English way.
Fatso the wombat 08-25-2006, 03:37 PM I think it was. Because once i don't know what episode it is he calls Aaron 'air-ron' not 'aron' i think i heard that can someone confirm it?
No. Definitely not.
Charlie saying "Bernard" was the same in both versions.
I've just checked. Both of them.

That's right. "Air-ons not your responsibility! You're not his father, you're not his family", etc.
Technically, it's the correct pronunciation of that name, but the two names have sort of merged over time. It's hard to tell if Claire pronounces it right, because with an Australian accent it could go either way.

Really? I had this boy in my class pronouced 'air-on' but loads of people pronouced it a-ron i thought that was the right term.
I think the writers dropped the ball when they didn't make Rose and Bernard's relationship a long term one. That whole business about marrying after 5 months didn't sit well with me. But I guess it's a testament to the actors because they managed to exude such chemistry for each other, you still get a sense that they're relationship is something born out of a deep love.
mygoodeye 08-28-2006, 02:21 PM i really liked this episode for two reasons; one that the flashbacks were focused on new characters, and i like Rose, and two that it addressed the question that nobody on the island seemed to be bothered about leaving any more.
on the other note, i know two Aarons, one's American and his is pronounced A-ron, the other is British and Air-ron. im not sure there is a correct way of saying it, iusnt it just down to preference?

Of course, it is down to preference, as no-one can tell someone how to pronounce their own name, but Aaron originated as Air-ron, but people gradually got them muddled up and now either is generally accepted, except by really fussy linguist-type-people.
Liplocked 08-30-2006, 01:31 PM and how do the fussy linguists pronounce aardvark I wonder? I prefer to hear Arran for Aaron myself.
I've been spoiled - I shall be spending season 3 mostly here in the UK lounge to see it doesn't happen again - so will say nothing of Michael's reapperance, but must say...
Henry is FABULOUS!! I am rapt every second this man is on screen - and thinking about him when he's not. And such a pleasure too, to have a character that interests and entertains me - Artz, Goodwin - NOT be dispatched or disintegrate inside a brace of episodes.
Loving Bernard too (and it's not Bernaaard please  why does that grate so? lol) Issac was a treat, and Rose... was she flirting with John? She's one sexy lady.
I'll leave you with a question that's puzzling the heck out of me: I'm watching Bernard and his Missus setting up tins in the beach larder and thinking; only two guys shift-sharing down the hatch... WHY are the tins so big?
If they opened them carrots; they'd have to eat them for every meal for a week to get through them before they turned - even with a fridge. :undecide: Wouldn't they?
LivingIsEasyWithEyesClosed 08-30-2006, 02:53 PM Yay, my favourite character came back! I think the others may have had captured mike and let him go to Jack and Kate as a kind of warning. Then again Mike wouldn't leave without Walt, Mike looked like was running from something did he not, an he also looked as if he had a rough nite, i couln't tel if he was bruised or not.

Oz_Vampy_Chick 08-31-2006, 12:21 PM That was such a good episode!!
As for the pronuncation, it doesn't really matter how Charlie says it, i say air-ron, but that's because that is my cousin's name! The spelling dictates how you pronunce it.
I loved Henry Gale in that episode! He has just the right level of evil, espeacially with evil smile!!!
Bernard was so funny "You bunk with a guy for 48 days, and he doesn't even call or write!" I just had to laugh. But it was better when he said "I liked it better when you just hit people with your stick!" and Charlie's reply "I like you just the way you are!"
that was V funny!

Simple - these are no ordinary carrots - they're Dharma Initiative carrotts!
I think Hurley said something about the ranch dressing lasting months & months at room temperature, that was a big tub too. And the peanut butter.
Liplocked 08-31-2006, 03:06 PM Did he? :eek2: ...how cool! I shall have to go read the transcripts now. Sooooo... intentional clue do you think? Or a quick 'cover our *****' comment and we write it in, or write around it later?
....actually - winging it here - irradiated food has an elongated shelf life doesn't it?
luv me_ luv lost 08-31-2006, 05:50 PM Now everyone is asking Jack to be in the 'club' who is actually in the 'club' is it only Jack?

Poor bugger. It's not as if he wanted the gig but has such trust issues he either wont, or can't, hand over the reigns to anyone else or enter some kind of power-share.

Or maybe it's a church for Jack? "The Lord is my Shephard" and all that. In the name of the Father (Christian - aptly named for this topic), the Son (Jack), and the surgical spirit.
Also, was it in this episode that Rose was handing Hurley a box of 'Dharmalars'? What the heck are Dharmalars?
