From BBC News:
"Australian naturalist and television personality Steve Irwin has been killed by a stingray during a diving expedition off the Australian coast.

Mr Irwin, 44, died after being struck in the chest by the stingray's barb while he was filming a documentary in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Paramedics from Cairns rushed to the scene but were unable to save him."

I saw this on the bbcnews front page and immediately thought it was just another rumour until I remembered the site I was looking at. This guy risked his life so many times over the years that it became almost comic, and now it has caught up with him. He is survived by a wife and two young children. Poor guy.

This made me so sad when I found out. Steve, although a madman, was clearly a dude of the highest degree, and a legend of conservation and the natural world.

It's a real loss to the world :frown:

I was a masive fan of Mr Irwin, and it is a great loss to the world to lose such an amazing man who obviously cared greatly about his animals, and showed them the up most respect. He will be sadly missed!!

And i agree, he really was a dude, and a mad man, but it was only by being such a mad man that he got the funding and the means to make a real diference in conserving wildlife!

I really feel sorry for his wife Terri and daughter Bindi!!!

Wow, it's so strange to be reading that this happend. He risked his life doing so many crazy things that you sorta get the sense that he was protected from it all. It's even became the joke of satiracle nature on several TV shows. But I guess this just proves you never can really know.

RIP Steve Irwin, I imagine we'll see you wrestling Crocs in Heaven for sport when we get there.

I am so saddened by this news. I was a huge fan.My heart goes out to Terry and the kids. He did so many things for the animal world. He will be sadly missed. Not that it makes it less sad, but at least he died doing what he loved doing. I hope someone is waiting in the wings to carry on his life's work.

He shall be missed. I can't believe he died, from a stingray... He had a wife and at least two kids... That's sad. One of them was only two years old. I want to go out and rent that movie he made (even if it was terrible) to remember Steve Irwin... :frown:

I've got to agree with you. He was a great animal advocate. He made learning about animals fun. I so feel for his wife Teri. He will be missed. I do hope that Teri writes a book about him. Because I'm sure she saw a side of him that nobody else did.

I was in absolute shock this morning when I heard that Stev Irwin had died. I just can't believe it still. I am really sad by this news.

I admired his infectious love for life, and his crazy adventures. I learnt alot about animals, that I really knew nothing about. He made learning about dangerous species and lesser-loved animals fun, exciting and interesting. I loved watching his shows and documentaries and I shall miss watching his exploits terriblly.

Unfortunately I have never met him or even seen him in person, but I always wish I had, and one day I will visit Australia Zoo.

My heart, thoughts and feelings go out to his family and friends at this very sad time, I hope they have all the love and support they need.

:rip: Thanks Steve, for teaching the world so much and opening our eyes a little wider. Rest peacefully, xxxx

I was always more of a Jeff Corwin fan myself...but Irwin did a LOT to educate people about conservation and preservation of certain species.

I feel sorry for his family and friends..and fans, especially his younger fans. I know a lot of children loved to watch his antics on Animal Planet.

It's weird, even though it's the end of the day, I keep expecting the people on the news to say. 'oh actually, he's fine, sorry, it was all a mistake'. I't's wrong that someone with so much zest for life, and in fact someone so larger than life, is now dead :frown:

Ah well, if there's crocs where he's gone to, they won't know what's hit 'em

This was such a shock. I honestly thought that we would hear about his death 40 years from now. Something like "Steve Irwin, who is well-known for fighting wild animals and brushes with death, died in his sleep last night." I never expected this.

I heard the news this morning and could not believe it. I was just floored. Steave Irwin was killed. That is absolutely awful. He's been an inspiration to everyone on this planet (and every creature) with his shows and his teachings on wildlife preservation. His message will live on with his family and all of his fans. He was a great man and I hope he rests peacefully.

Ok, here is the link to the actual article below. on MSNBC, there was also a video where the PETA spokesman, one Dan Mathews talked to MSNBC and compared Steve Irwin's show to MTV's Jack!$@.

Link----http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14626178/

***edited to remove material under copyright...link is fine

Now what is said in this article is tame in comparison to what Dan said on MSNBC news in a interview, where as I listed above. He compared Steve Irwin's show to MTV's Jack$%$ and said that he was no friend to the environment.

Is anyone else as floored about this as I am? Steve has been gone for less then a week, and here his family will get to hear some wackjack nutjob spokesman for a animal rights group taking pot shots at him(Steve). If anyone regularly donates or supports PETA in any way, not might be the time to use your financial influence to let them know that comments like this are no appreciated. I for one will be writing a letter to PETA showing my displeasure at how cold and callous their words were about a man, who whether they agreed with his style or not, helped the environement.

thats kind of funny coming from the peta .
July 1998 to the end of 2005, peta killed over 14400 cats and dogs etc. at its Virginia headquarters,
i saw penn and teller the other night, they were saying peta use violence to further their agendas, i wouldnt listen to a word peta say,

God's tom
09-14-2006, 04:25 AM
Peta is led by a bunch of animal rights extremists. I know that there are good, well meaning people who are members or suport them, but the people in charge feel they need to pull stunts like this to draw media attention.
I wrote them off a long time ago.

PETA gives the animal rights movement a bad name. Steve Irwin did more for the animal world in one minute of his show than PETA has done over its entire existence. I doubt many would mourn the loss of this group as they mourn Steve. At least he was credible.

i wouldn't paint all PETA activists with that brush, I'm sure there is a lot of good in the org.
But they def have a very bad name, and those comments are ignorant, bigoted and of course false..
They are trying to capitalize on a tragic event

That's the thing with PETA. The ONLY reason they made that "statement" is to get a bit of publicity. I'm a supporter of animal rights, but PETA can go fuck themselves.

I agree. I was watching one of Steve's shows, and he was talking about how he loved to educate people about the enviornment. He felt that if he could make learning about nature fun, people would care for it and want to protect it.

And then PETA goes and says something like this-- about a man who loved nature and loved to educate people about it. The last thing he wanted to do was to bring harm to the animals on his show. It doesn't make sense, and it really makes me upset that they would say something like that.

I had tears too.I feel so sorry for Terri...but she is a really strong woman who will pull together and make sure Steve's legacy is not forgotten. I get a little teary eyed everytime I see his daughter speaking at his memorial. How brave was that for her at 8 years old to speak in front of that many people. Steve would be so proud.
