They represent the number of posts you've made -- you get a new title when you reach a certain number of posts.

There are a few people around with over 2000 TheG is one, BurningStar another. They made it to Business Class. The karma was quite a long time ago. It was here for less than a day and people complained and it was gone again. I personally liked it but seemed to cause problems.

The stars are just bigger and cooler.

Well I have the "cool stars" although I think the orange is oogly, I like the blue ones I think some of the mods have.

Personally I find spell checkers a lazy form of writing.

It makes people less likely to remember how to spell and therefore does not correct the situation. I do understand it is needed for the odd word that you cannot spell, but to rely on it totally is wrong.

I disagree with the getting rid of the spell checker --- My son has dyslexia and no matter how hard he tries he is a terrible speller - spell checker ensures that he won't feel bad -- given that he truly cannot spell So, I like the idea of having it there for those that need it --

I've been a member since November and have barely put up 200 posts. Others have been on the board since January or February and put up thousands of posts. (Personally, I think a better system would be to count the number of words in a post to at least give an indication of the thought that went into it, but that could be abused too).

I think they should just drop the stars and leave the count as the implication is that someone with 'more' stars opinions are more important than those with less stars. The incentive is to increase your 'standing' by posting more often whether it be a well-thought-out multi-paragraph treatise on the state of the island, or simply 'I agree' or 'LOL'. Posts with less than 3 complete sentences shouldn't even count as they certainly aren't conveying any new or relevant information... :-\

But that's just my opinion. I might be wrong...

its basically a already argued over topic which is why they changed it to the format that it is now if your a gamer those posts don't count I'm not going for any further arguments on why the stars etc not worth stirring up that pot again it was ugly until Karri stepped in and they came up with this format and it's been working fine. everybody seems happy

Very few of my posts are "I agree" posts. *I've never typed "lol" in a post. *I hang out in Chit Chat when I have nothing LOST-esque to talk about. *That's where I make friends, and it's not as serious as the other boards. *I'm not trying to race to get pretty stars (I'm not trying to imply that anyone accused me of that). *I don't judge people by their post counts, but by what they say.

A board I used to frequent had a certain number of characters you had to have in a post. *I like the idea, however, I don't want to make things harder on the mods by bringing little things like this up with them. I don't know where I'm going with this.

No, that doesn't make sense. When I post, say, four times in one topic it counts as four posts.

Didn't know that about the 'gamers'. *Makes sense. *Basically, the only time I post is when I have something to say that (I think) might be of value to others on the board. *Sometimes I just can't stop myself from being sarcastic and cranky, though. *It comes from being old, sarcastic, and cranky * ;D

I've been able to lock/unlock my own threads since I was in Baggage. Oh and just so you know the next class you will be in will be First Class.

I haven't come across many posts that are just 1-3 words outside of the game section, but I have. Those were mainly by a couple of posters who know eachother from outside of here and tend to just talk to eachother about how there day was when they go to school with eachother. It can really get on my nerves sometimes.

At one point in the Games section, if you posted in there, in a game, your post counted. *However, some games only required you to post one word, so there was this big debate between some people that the posts shouldn't count because they believed some people were using games to get their post count higher (whether this is true or not is beyond me, I wasn't involved in the debate, just heard about it from various people). *Karri came up with the solution (because you cannot just pick and choose which posts to count you either have to block them all from a section, or come up with "game" pieces to signify who posted in games the most and they were now considered a "gamer"). *A lot of people felt the "gamer" pieces was like segregation (and it is) and so Karri held a poll about what we felt is the right thing, the majority voted to just wipe out the games posts from everyone's current post count and then not count them any further. *For example, I only had at the time around 70 posts in games, so if my post count at the time was 170, it was now 100 (that wasn't my real post count I just can't remember what it was). * *

Well, if you choose to look at it that way, maybe. *It depends on the poster. *In the threads where people are "talking" (I guess you are referring to chit chat/groupships?) aren't any less important, you are getting to know the people you are chatting with and forming friendships with others online. *In every thread people are "talking".....we're "talking" right now. *

I certainly know what facetious is....I have been said to be facetious myself at times. *However, on a messageboard and on the internet as a whole, people do not know your tone or you as a person....so if you are going to be facetious, I would advise saying "I am being facetious"....not so many posts after the original. I was also saying you were not being amusing, so you don't have an understanding of what I consider amusing :)

I admire those who are in the military. I don't have what it takes to be in the military and I admit that. I certainly have respect for those who have been and currently are serving in the military. I have friends in the military who are over in Iraq right now and I hope they return safely....it is just not for me and it is something I would never join. I was not attacking you personally for being in the military (I would never), I was stating that I haven't been in the military, and I never would be, so I wouldn't know.

This does need to end, and I'm ending it on my side here, I was in no way trying to attack you personally even if I did or it came across that way, I was only attacking what you were saying because I did not feel it was right and I was trying to understand and clear up how you felt about the whole issue (of the posts). Again, I apologize for any hard feelings.

Okay, I know this isn't one of the threads that I normally post in, but I feel like I need to jump in here.

OldWiz, since this is a self-policed community for the most part, I feel that I need to tell you that your facetiousness did NOT come across that way in your earlier posts. If you are going to be facetious, then you probably need to either state that you are being facetious or add a ;) or j/k to the end of your post. People reading your posts will understand then that you are being facetious and will not be as likely to jump to defend themselves against perceived rudeness. And yes, I agree with Star that your posts were coming across as rude, but knowing now that they were meant as facetious, I can look at them differently. I hope that my suggestions help. I have been involved in disagreements online because something someone posted was taken the wrong way. It might take a little more effort to add the things to the end of your posts to let everyone know that you're meaning things in a joking manner, but it is worth it in the long run.

It was a simple question that someone asked in the beginning of February when people were just finding out there were different classes and other things to look forward to being on these boards. We are still finding out what Karri has planned and I thought I'd continue on the same thread instead of starting a new one.

This thread has been sleeping for awhile and the Mods have more than enough to do moving other things around. These boards have been split and split and reconfigured several times since this was first posted.

I guess I should let sleeping threads die.

Sam, don't be sorry that you resurrected this thread! Things like this are going to happen from time to time, no matter what thread you're on. This is a common occurrence in online comminities, and this one wasn't bad at all. Just a minor disagreement that seems to have been resolved now! :)

I've been on these boards since December but I've only encountered stuff like this twice. True, I don't wander very much off of Spoiler Theories. Pretty much everyone is great, ocassionally there is the bad day or a sensitive nerve gets hit but it is resolved.

Just making a mental note because twice something has happened for no real reason.

I have no clue who Dennis Miller is, *??? so it didn't clue me in to anything lol. *The devil face is scary *:devil: It just looks angry and mean :( But now I will look at it differently when you use it. When I read the comment about "YOU HAVE MORE, I want 'em too!" I thought about a 6 year old child crying because they want whatever they can't have....but I thought you were actually being serious *:ermm: and am glad to know you weren't being serious.

I guess this is how I would say to postulate a sarcastic remark. *I'll use one of your sentences, "You have more, I want 'em too! ::) :P" That signifies...I am being sarcastic (eyes rolling) and you are joking (sticking tongue out) or you can laugh, wink, whatever...the faces help distinguish tones. *Otherwise when we make sarcastic remarks, we take them seriously because we can't hear how someone is saying it. *So, I think the faces are the best way to go around getting the tone across. *And if you were being sarcastic about how to formulate a sarcastic remark, then just forget I said anything. *I am a sarcastic person as well and so I try to use the faces the best I can to get it across because otherwise people get offended and misunderstand, and you know the rest. *I know the icons suck and it would be easier to just say it and have everyone understand, but there are tons of different personalities on here and no one is going to read one comment in the same way.

But, we persevered, and she gave me a cookie, so everything is just lovely and I've made a nice new friend (who thinks I'm her Uncle Earl). But that's perfectly all right with me, I've been called a LOT worse...

Actually a family member of mine was killed by being decapitated from their seatbelt. Also there was this guy I know who drowned because he couldn't get his seat belt off. Even though these are freak accidents, they are partly why I refuse to wear it and I also don't like being confined.

Interestingly enough, I started my college career in Psych, focused on Abnormal and Parapsychology - I was interested in how women think... :angel: :angel:
Course, then I realized that that topic really fell under the realm of 'magic' and so my path led me into the Mystical Arts, with a minor in Enchantments and Ensorcelments... and I don't know any more now about that subject that I did back then!!! ;)

I love Abnormal Psychology....which probably leads me into my career with the criminals with Forensic Psych.

Parapsychology is such a cool subject, it's just a shame not many places offer courses in it (and I don't even think you can get a major in it).

If you wanted to learn more about women, you should of took "women's studies" I'm in that class right now, there are about 50 women and 3 guys. Poor guys :(

From what I understand parapsychology now incorporates the study of paranormal behavior....not just magic, unless you consider magic to incorporate paranormal activity. I think magic is magic and paranormal activity is more of ghosts and trying to discover their existence. I have no idea what I'm trying to say, but whatever, it's late :P

My definition of magic is: Anything that science has no explanation for... yet! ;D
Since I, also, keep forgetting how 'literally' you take things, I better explain: parapsychology (back then) is almost exactly the same as it is today (i.e. telepathy, telekinesis, paranormal activity, etc.) - because science has made no progress (or very little) in obtaining empirical evidence regarding the subject. I suspect some progress has been made since the invention of the MRI although I imagine it's a bit tough to conduct conclusive experiments when the subjects head is in a big tube (Joke!). It is basically the study of the 'unknown' and perhaps, 'unknowable'. Since we only use about 10% of our brains (some more, some less...) there seemed like a lot of 'room' to work in (semi-joke). Which is why it fascinated me - it's as close to my definition of magic as there is.

When I discovered that, to achieve my ambition, it would take 12 years of school to become a psychiatric specialist, I decided that I'd rather make money and got a degree in Economics instead, but spent the last 40 years in computers (yes, they were just invented back then). There you have it, more than you ever wanted to know about OldWiz.. :angel:

I have heard it takes quite a long time to get into psychiatry, that's why I'm going with psychology, a few less school years (plus I don't have to worry about getting a MD)....and I need to negate as many school years as I can, or I'll go crazy.

There is this big debate somewhere on here about pseudoscience vs. science and no one really has a clear cut idea of where it starts/ends. You'd probably be good posting in that thread lol. I gave my best guess, but it's probably not anywhere near accurate.

The forum is called NERDS of which I am a proud member! We are having a great time discussing an obscure genius named Tesla who lived and worked at the beginning of the 20th century. His work is shrouded in mystery and surrounded by a whole army of conspiracy -theorists (really - NO JOKE) and it is really fun examining the possibility that JJ is basing some of the concepts for LOST on the work done by this man. The feeling is that JJ loves to use fantastic, but plausible concepts (which cannot be disproved) in his shows, a la Rembaldi in Alias. We are all busy trying to discover which of Tesla's theories fit the 'facts' we know about the island and it's inhabitants.

Real serious stuff over there and I don't dare be facetious or sarcastic at all. You'd enjoy it...

Well actually the thread was a different one then "NERDS", and someone from "NERDS" (I would presume) came in and mentioned Telsa and some info they had and posted some links so I read a little bit about him and his work and I think the stuff is really neat. I'll check out the NERDS ship though :) Thanks!
