Kato 02-09-2005, 11:05 PM They represent the number of posts you've made -- you get a new title when you reach a certain number of posts. What I want to know is what happened to the Karma thing under our names?* It was there earlier today and now it's gone.* This board is as mysterious as the show! green_eyed_colleen 02-09-2005, 11:31 PM Is the spelling correction gone for anyone else too??? I miss it :'( LuvMySayid 02-10-2005, 08:10 AM Karri (Board Administrator) is able to "power down" certain aspects of the board when it is especially busy. care_n_jim 02-10-2005, 09:00 AM does that mean spell check is permanently gone (SEE I NEED SPELL CHECK) :lol2: wait it is here again --- so it comes and goes????? and I had it spelled WRONG!!!!! Care Kato 02-10-2005, 03:11 PM Karri (Board Administrator) is able to "power down" certain aspects of the board when it is especially busy.* Ah, thanks for the answer LuvMySayid! Sam G 03-25-2005, 10:48 PM We've all come so far since then but I don't think you get the really cool stars until you reach 2000. nonyabizwaz 03-26-2005, 07:49 AM 2000? :o I haven't seen anyone with 2000. Who has it? What do the stars look like? I also noticed the karma thing a few weeks back too. Didn't notice it had made an encore appearance. Why DOES it keep doing that? Sam G 03-26-2005, 10:22 AM 2000?* *:o* I haven't seen anyone with 2000.* *Who has it?* What do the stars look like?* I also noticed the karma thing a few weeks back too.* *Didn't notice it had made an encore appearance.* Why DOES it keep doing that? There are a few people around with over 2000 TheG is one, BurningStar another. They made it to Business Class. The karma was quite a long time ago. It was here for less than a day and people complained and it was gone again. I personally liked it but seemed to cause problems. The stars are just bigger and cooler. i_love_dmjgmfna 03-26-2005, 05:46 PM What was the karma thing? Sam G 03-26-2005, 06:30 PM What was the karma thing? If you put Karma in the search you might be able to find it. Let me see. Nope not there. There were Karma points, once upon a time. If someone liked what you had to say they could give you a point or take one away. car88win 03-26-2005, 07:32 PM kind of like the help hurt game but way too easy to take personally ::) XxNicholeexX 03-27-2005, 02:08 AM 2000?* *:o* I haven't seen anyone with 2000.* *Who has it?* What do the stars look like?* I also noticed the karma thing a few weeks back too.* *Didn't notice it had made an encore appearance.* Why DOES it keep doing that? Varda and theG have over 3,000. Why is this in the spoiler theories section? ??? BurningStar4 03-27-2005, 02:23 AM Haha, I was just wondering the same thing....I thought someone had a theory regarding "on the tarmac, baggage, coach" haha. Well I have the "cool stars" although I think the orange is oogly, I like the blue ones I think some of the mods have. Trueogre 03-27-2005, 07:34 AM Personally I find spell checkers a lazy form of writing. It makes people less likely to remember how to spell and therefore does not correct the situation. I do understand it is needed for the odd word that you cannot spell, but to rely on it totally is wrong. Get rid of the checker I say!! T'is evil! nonyabizwaz 03-27-2005, 08:52 AM Varda and theG have over 3,000. Why is this in the spoiler theories section? ??? Because the THEORY is people with over 3,000 are SPOILED with their fancy stars. :lol2: theG 03-27-2005, 08:56 AM *eyes look like my stars* But they're just so pretty... I get the purple ones when I hit 4000 posts. I don't know what the class is called. Sam G 03-27-2005, 12:51 PM Does anyone know all the classes and the benefits, like the Cool stars at 2000 and now appears 4000? car88win 03-27-2005, 12:54 PM don't think there's benefits but they are nice to look at* theG 03-27-2005, 12:55 PM I know that you have the ability to lock and unlock your own threads once you hit Business Class. *I only have a few hundred more posts to go before I hit the next level. *If I make it there, I'll tell you if I get any new goodies. car88win 03-27-2005, 12:56 PM cool thanks care_n_jim 03-27-2005, 01:15 PM I disagree with the getting rid of the spell checker --- My son has dyslexia and no matter how hard he tries he is a terrible speller - spell checker ensures that he won't feel bad -- given that he truly cannot spell So, I like the idea of having it there for those that need it -- :) car88win 03-27-2005, 01:17 PM and I've been known to have a dyslexic keyboard so no way Jose* *gotta keep the spell checker* *saved my stupid butt many a times* :lol2: OldWiz 03-27-2005, 02:20 PM The Karma rating was cool, but risky. Basically, it attempted to show the 'quality' of a person's posts, but, of course, could be badly abused, i.e. the equivalent of 'flaming'. Now, what we have is a rating of who 'talks' the most. I've been a member since November and have barely put up 200 posts. Others have been on the board since January or February and put up thousands of posts. (Personally, I think a better system would be to count the number of words in a post to at least give an indication of the thought that went into it, but that could be abused too). I think they should just drop the stars and leave the count as the implication is that someone with 'more' stars opinions are more important than those with less stars. The incentive is to increase your 'standing' by posting more often whether it be a well-thought-out multi-paragraph treatise on the state of the island, or simply 'I agree' or 'LOL'. Posts with less than 3 complete sentences shouldn't even count as they certainly aren't conveying any new or relevant information... :-\ But that's just my opinion. I might be wrong... OldWiz car88win 03-27-2005, 02:24 PM its basically a already argued over topic which is why they changed it to the format that it is now if your a gamer those posts don't count I'm not going for any further arguments on why the stars etc not worth stirring up that pot again it was ugly until Karri stepped in and they came up with this format and it's been working fine. everybody seems happy OldWiz 03-27-2005, 02:37 PM OK, you're right (I just got another post count...) ;D ...if your a gamer those posts don't count... Not sure what you were trying to say, there...? If it was important to what you were saying, please elucidate. Otherwise, never mind... OldWiz car88win 03-27-2005, 02:43 PM it was if it'll help is all.....in the game section backgammon i think it's set up under any posts in there don't count...the consensus was we wanted something for our little ego's so they changed it to the current......glad to help add a post count but it's a good discussion i like too ;) i_love_dmjgmfna 03-27-2005, 02:48 PM Thanks for clearing up the karma thing for me, OldWiz. My opinion of the posts thing, is I'm fine with it, but I always thought it was weird that if you post more than once in a topic, it still only counts as one post. Just thought it was interesting. (And hope that made sense! ;D) theG 03-27-2005, 02:49 PM Very few of my posts are "I agree" posts. *I've never typed "lol" in a post. *I hang out in Chit Chat when I have nothing LOST-esque to talk about. *That's where I make friends, and it's not as serious as the other boards. *I'm not trying to race to get pretty stars (I'm not trying to imply that anyone accused me of that). *I don't judge people by their post counts, but by what they say. A board I used to frequent had a certain number of characters you had to have in a post. *I like the idea, however, I don't want to make things harder on the mods by bringing little things like this up with them. I don't know where I'm going with this. Thanks for clearing up the karma thing for me, OldWiz. My opinion of the posts thing, is I'm fine with it, but I always thought it was weird that if you post more than once in a topic, it still only counts as one post. Just thought it was interesting. (And hope that made sense! ;D) No, that doesn't make sense. When I post, say, four times in one topic it counts as four posts. car88win 03-27-2005, 02:52 PM like you sayG we've driven them mad before trying to straighten things out and find a happy medium i'm fine so I'm off to go discuss bye OldWiz 03-27-2005, 02:54 PM it was if it'll help is all.....in the game section backgammon i think it's set up under any posts in there don't count...the consensus was we wanted something for our little ego's so they changed it to the current......glad to help add a post count but it's a good discussion i like too ;) Didn't know that about the 'gamers'. *Makes sense. *Basically, the only time I post is when I have something to say that (I think) might be of value to others on the board. *Sometimes I just can't stop myself from being sarcastic and cranky, though. *It comes from being old, sarcastic, and cranky * ;D I honestly don't know how anyone could possibly average 50 post a day and say anything meaningful. *Must be a whole lot smarter than me... But that's just my opinion, I might be wrong... OldWiz XxNicholeexX 03-27-2005, 03:01 PM I know that you have the ability to lock and unlock your own threads once you hit Business Class. *I only have a few hundred more posts to go before I hit the next level. *If I make it there, I'll tell you if I get any new goodies. I've been able to lock/unlock my own threads since I was in Baggage. Oh and just so you know the next class you will be in will be First Class. I haven't come across many posts that are just 1-3 words outside of the game section, but I have. Those were mainly by a couple of posters who know eachother from outside of here and tend to just talk to eachother about how there day was when they go to school with eachother. It can really get on my nerves sometimes. car88win 03-27-2005, 03:02 PM most of them can't *;) * and i'm about as sarcastic and cranky as they come * *i even have a "cranky" coffee cup for work * *no big deal * *i'd rather post in good deep discussions too but every now and then gotta have a little bit of kid fun too * keeps you young at heart *;) theG 03-27-2005, 03:03 PM There are some political threads in Chit Chat I've posted loads in, and there are also discussions of other television programs. *In group ships, I dissect my favorite characters. *I post a lot in the spoiler section. *I don't know how I've gotten so many posts. *I just post wherever my interests lead me. OldWiz 03-27-2005, 03:03 PM Hey! *I think I can get another 'star' if I just post 3 more times!!! *Let's see now, what can I say? * Uhhhh... Ummmm. *Nope, nothing there... BurningStar4 03-27-2005, 03:05 PM The Karma rating was cool, but risky. Posts with less than 3 complete sentences shouldn't even count as they certainly aren't conveying any new or relevant information... :-\ But that's just my opinion. I might be wrong... OldWiz At one point in the Games section, if you posted in there, in a game, your post counted. *However, some games only required you to post one word, so there was this big debate between some people that the posts shouldn't count because they believed some people were using games to get their post count higher (whether this is true or not is beyond me, I wasn't involved in the debate, just heard about it from various people). *Karri came up with the solution (because you cannot just pick and choose which posts to count you either have to block them all from a section, or come up with "game" pieces to signify who posted in games the most and they were now considered a "gamer"). *A lot of people felt the "gamer" pieces was like segregation (and it is) and so Karri held a poll about what we felt is the right thing, the majority voted to just wipe out the games posts from everyone's current post count and then not count them any further. *For example, I only had at the time around 70 posts in games, so if my post count at the time was 170, it was now 100 (that wasn't my real post count I just can't remember what it was). * * Now, what we have is a rating of who 'talks' the most. Well, if you choose to look at it that way, maybe. *It depends on the poster. *In the threads where people are "talking" (I guess you are referring to chit chat/groupships?) aren't any less important, you are getting to know the people you are chatting with and forming friendships with others online. *In every thread people are "talking".....we're "talking" right now. * I think the whole debate is just pointless, it is only stars, and labels....it really doesn't matter. *It is there to make things just look more fancy and fun. *I don't think I'm any more special than anyone else here because I have bigger stars. *I'm not sure if there are any special "privileges" at 4000 or any higher up but I can tell you at 2000, there is nothing special. *Seriously, it is not a huge issue, they are just stars and a post count, we have more important things to worry about not only on here but especially in the outside world. * theG 03-27-2005, 03:06 PM Two more, actually *;). I like posting in some of the Chit Chat threads to "let it all out." *I've been having a suck-y day, so we all discuss the suckiness. *And some of the threads are fun. *Like car88win said, you've got to have some fun every now and then! car88win 03-27-2005, 03:07 PM and there you have it....i I knew someone would come along and clear it all up *or put it in a nut shell so to speak now I'm sure they'll move this as i have no idea why it was started in spoiler theories to begin with *(that's a mystery in and of it'self) * car88win 03-27-2005, 03:09 PM yea otherwise you'll start saying "my head hurts" it can get so deep and serious and to be honest I get "lost" on some of it but still want to add my 2 cents now and then theG 03-27-2005, 03:11 PM That's where I've gotten posts from! *Posting in topics to tell people their thread has already been posted (and, in most cases, is right below the thread they've just made) or to tell someone that their thread doesn't belong where they've put it. *Yes, I'm a wannabe mod *:P *;) Exactly, car88win. It's hard to be a Shannon fan who loses her temper very easily, and the brain starts to ache. car88win 03-27-2005, 03:14 PM Exactly, car88win.* It's hard to be a Shannon fan who loses her temper very easily, and the brain starts to ache. that's OK G we've got aspirin enough for all of us. ;) I wouldn't mind being a Mod either but it is a huge responsability to be so impartial when people have such strong feelings on things theG 03-27-2005, 03:16 PM Yeah, it's way too hard.* We've got some excellent mods.* I just want to help them out a bit--give them a bit of a break. XxNicholeexX 03-27-2005, 03:17 PM I think the reason I have some many posts is because I have no life anymore. **shrugs* *I also think that most of my posts are in the Group Ships section, mainly in N.A.I.L.S. *[/cheap plug] Earlier it was mentioned that the spell check should be removed, I beg to differ. *I actually think that more people should start using the spell checker, it would make me so much happier. I love nothing more than going back and forth on a topic heck we're doing it now and Star knows heck we did it one day where i think it was just the 2 of us on that day! felt like it  well enough of that debate looks like the other topics I've been on are being neglected and they are discussing without me ta! I was also saying you were not being amusing, so you don't have an understanding of what I consider amusing :) I think she meant that you shouldn't have the star according to your philosophy because of posts like this: Hey! I got my STAR!!! Thanks, guys... That's absoloutely correct, that is what I meant :) OldWiz 03-27-2005, 04:04 PM I stand corrected. I bow to your vast knowledge of the internet and message boards, since I don't use them as much as you do. I just build them... Perhaps you should withhold remarks like 'it's all about jealousy' and 'it's not amusing' as that certainly doesn't engender the spirit of camaraderie that you seem to want. As a final request, please don't bother to lecture me on how I will feel when I have reached your level of communication output. I guarantee that I will never achieve that, since I have other things I am responsible for. It really doesn't show a lot of insight into the way adult communication is conducted. Seeing as this is the only messageboard I post at, and I do not build them, you would have the vast knowledge regarding them.* I was simply saying, as you probably know, people do not know you and are not able to understand your tone or underlying sarcasm in a remark unless it is completely obvious....as you are being above, to almost the point of being rude. You simply stated it yourself that it is indeed about jealously with your statement, and I quote... I was simply verifying what you were trying to portray in previous posts such as this: Hey!* I got my STAR!!!* Thanks, guys...* * I may be wrong, but this statement says to me that* you were trying to be amusing, if so, it isn't amusing it is simply adding fuel to the fire with a sarcastic undertone (as you have been doing all along).* As a final request, please don't bother to lecture me on how I will feel when I have reached your level of communication output. It really doesn't show a lot of insight into the way adult communication is conducted. :lol2: Well then the post count and stars really shouldn't be a issue to you if you have other things you are responsible for?* :P I am an adult, I know how to communicate.* ETA: Typo OldWiz 03-27-2005, 05:58 PM BurningStar4: If you are an honest person, I am sure you will understand that my comments were directed at a 'thing', i.e. the whole topic of stars and levels. I quote: ' ...what we have here is a jealousy issue, in all seriousness' '...nothing to have a freak attack over...' '...I haven't been in the military, nor would I ever be...' '...You'll get there, and when you do, don't say I didn't tell you...'. Your whole tone toward me was patronizing, hence my comment about 'lecturing'. Because you didn't understand the facetious intent of my posts ('bantering, jocular in nature') is not my fault, and does not excuse you denigrating my posts (there is a big difference between disagreeing and denigrating). It is you, young lady, who has been rude, not I. I have said what needed to be said, now you can have the last word on the subject... OldWiz-- I will apologize if what I have said above has offended you in any way, it was not meant to offend you, it was just meant to point out some of the issues you are portraying. What I am about to go through is not a battle of who is right, but more of trying to clean the air. Yes you were directing your comments about a "thing" but you were also bringing posters into the debate and how posters post and etc. The Karma rating was cool, but risky.* Basically, it attempted to show the 'quality' of a person's posts, but, of course, could be badly abused, i.e. the equivalent of 'flaming'.* Now, what we have is a rating of who 'talks' the most. I've been a member since November and have barely put up 200 posts.* Others have been on the board since January or February and put up thousands of posts.* (Personally, I think a better system would be to count the number of words in a post to at least give an indication of the thought that went into it, but that could be abused too).* I think they should just drop the stars and leave the count as the implication is that someone with 'more' stars opinions are more important than those with less stars.* The incentive is to increase your 'standing' by posting more often whether it be a well-thought-out multi-paragraph treatise on the state of the island, or simply 'I agree' or 'LOL'.* *Posts with less than 3 complete sentences shouldn't even count as they certainly aren't conveying any new or relevant information... :-\ But that's just my opinion.* I might be wrong... OldWiz I honestly don't know how anyone could possibly average 50 post a day and say anything meaningful. Must be a whole lot smarter than me... Onto my comments that were offensive to you: ' ...what we have here is a jealousy issue, in all seriousness' I agree, it's just stars and labels - but YOU HAVE MORE! I want 'em, too! (For those of us that have been in the military, we KNOW stars are really IMPORTANT!) Only 1 more to go and I'll get another star. So keep talking, so I can reply... I'm sorry, really I am....but that was the best and only conclusion I could draw from the statement. Unless you were being totally sarcastic, which I didn't know at the time, only now could I think of it since you said you were being facetious earlier ??? '...I haven't been in the military, nor would I ever be...' I admire those who are in the military. I don't have what it takes to be in the military and I admit that. I certainly have respect for those who have been and currently are serving in the military. I have friends in the military who are over in Iraq right now and I hope they return safely....it is just not for me and it is something I would never join. I was not attacking you personally for being in the military (I would never), I was stating that I haven't been in the military, and I never would be, so I wouldn't know. This does need to end, and I'm ending it on my side here, I was in no way trying to attack you personally even if I did or it came across that way, I was only attacking what you were saying because I did not feel it was right and I was trying to understand and clear up how you felt about the whole issue (of the posts). Again, I apologize for any hard feelings. CruCheri 03-27-2005, 06:37 PM Okay, I know this isn't one of the threads that I normally post in, but I feel like I need to jump in here. OldWiz, since this is a self-policed community for the most part, I feel that I need to tell you that your facetiousness did NOT come across that way in your earlier posts. If you are going to be facetious, then you probably need to either state that you are being facetious or add a ;) or j/k to the end of your post. People reading your posts will understand then that you are being facetious and will not be as likely to jump to defend themselves against perceived rudeness. And yes, I agree with Star that your posts were coming across as rude, but knowing now that they were meant as facetious, I can look at them differently. I hope that my suggestions help. I have been involved in disagreements online because something someone posted was taken the wrong way. It might take a little more effort to add the things to the end of your posts to let everyone know that you're meaning things in a joking manner, but it is worth it in the long run. Sam G 03-27-2005, 09:59 PM I'm almost sorry I resurected this post. It was a simple question that someone asked in the beginning of February when people were just finding out there were different classes and other things to look forward to being on these boards. We are still finding out what Karri has planned and I thought I'd continue on the same thread instead of starting a new one. This thread has been sleeping for awhile and the Mods have more than enough to do moving other things around. These boards have been split and split and reconfigured several times since this was first posted. I guess I should let sleeping threads die. theG 03-27-2005, 10:02 PM Stuff happens, Sam.* A similar situation was bound to have occurred whether you had resurrected this thread or not. CruCheri 03-27-2005, 10:12 PM Sam, don't be sorry that you resurrected this thread! Things like this are going to happen from time to time, no matter what thread you're on. This is a common occurrence in online comminities, and this one wasn't bad at all. Just a minor disagreement that seems to have been resolved now! :) Sam G 03-27-2005, 10:55 PM I've been on these boards since December but I've only encountered stuff like this twice. True, I don't wander very much off of Spoiler Theories. Pretty much everyone is great, ocassionally there is the bad day or a sensitive nerve gets hit but it is resolved. Just making a mental note because twice something has happened for no real reason. BurningStar4 03-27-2005, 11:02 PM Don't feel sorry....It's not a big deal, hopefully all is resolved now. XxNicholeexX 03-27-2005, 11:08 PM If everyone is now getting along I shall hand out cookies. *hands out cookies* BurningStar4 03-27-2005, 11:23 PM Cookies are yum, well choc. chip ones anyway :) wadahoot 03-28-2005, 12:51 AM :whistling2: Nice weather we're having* :whistling2: :flower: no cookies around, but I'll hand out flowers of peace! :stuart: OldWiz 03-28-2005, 01:12 AM Relax, everybody. *All is well. *I feel that I now understand the proper way to post a facetious comment and am now capable of doing it correctly. *Thanks, BurningStar and CruCherie! * ;D *(Did I do that correctly?) * I must admit, though, that I'm still a little hazy about how to properly formulate a sarcastic remark... *Something which I predict I will sorely need in the future... * * But *I just can't stand being so 'in the dark' about these things, so I just have to ask: * * * Didn't signing off with Dennis Miller's famous end-rant line ('but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...) give you a clue? * * * Didn't signing with the little 'devil-face' give you a clue? *Or, does that mean something different than being devilish...? * * Didn't making a remark like a little child (..'YOU HAVE MORE, I want 'em too! - something my 6 year-old granddaughter says on a regular basis) give you a clue? * * Didn't calling myself *'sarcastic and cranky' give you a clue? I'm so glad somebody got it (besides me...). I have that 'dissonance' thing in my head, too! I just thought it was 'the voices'... ;D OldWiz BurningStar4 03-28-2005, 01:40 AM Relax, everybody. *All is well. *I feel that I now understand the proper way to post a facetious comment and am now capable of doing it correctly. *Thanks, BurningStar and CruCherie! * ;D *(Did I do that correctly?) * Yes, that was correct ;) But *I just can't stand being so 'in the dark' about these things, so I just have to ask: * * *Didn't signing off with Dennis Miller's famous end-rant line ('but that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...) give you a clue? * * *Didn't signing with the little 'devil-face' give you a clue? *Or, does that mean something different than being devilish...? * *Didn't making a remark like a little child (..'YOU HAVE MORE, I want 'em too! - something my 6 year-old granddaughter says on a regular basis) give you a clue? * *Didn't calling myself *'sarcastic and cranky' give you a clue? I have no clue who Dennis Miller is, *??? so it didn't clue me in to anything lol. *The devil face is scary * It just looks angry and mean :( But now I will look at it differently when you use it. When I read the comment about "YOU HAVE MORE, I want 'em too!" I thought about a 6 year old child crying because they want whatever they can't have....but I thought you were actually being serious *:ermm: and am glad to know you weren't being serious. I guess this is how I would say to postulate a sarcastic remark. *I'll use one of your sentences, "You have more, I want 'em too! ::) :P" That signifies...I am being sarcastic (eyes rolling) and you are joking (sticking tongue out) or you can laugh, wink, whatever...the faces help distinguish tones. *Otherwise when we make sarcastic remarks, we take them seriously because we can't hear how someone is saying it. *So, I think the faces are the best way to go around getting the tone across. *And if you were being sarcastic about how to formulate a sarcastic remark, then just forget I said anything. *I am a sarcastic person as well and so I try to use the faces the best I can to get it across because otherwise people get offended and misunderstand, and you know the rest. *I know the icons suck and it would be easier to just say it and have everyone understand, but there are tons of different personalities on here and no one is going to read one comment in the same way. Oh and did you get my PM? Just wondering. OldWiz 03-28-2005, 02:01 AM Wow! What a fascinating example of the generation gap (or 2-generation gap). You make me feel so old, dear... It's like the Elton John of smiley's theG 03-28-2005, 10:38 PM Oh, yeah.* That was a hot smiley.* I would use it way too often. I also really like my idea of having a "lights on, nobody's home" smiley. BurningStar4 03-28-2005, 10:38 PM :lol2: I missed that idea, but I like the sound of it :) theG 03-28-2005, 10:40 PM Actually, I just came up with it now* :P I was going to bring up the one I had about the eyes of the smiley being stars.* I would use that one a lot. There's a king smiley, but no queen smiley.* How sexist! BurningStar4 03-28-2005, 10:43 PM There goes those right-wingers again! :P I will just use this :king: as meaning "queen of the universe" :king: theG 03-28-2005, 10:45 PM Perhaps the code shouldn't be king, but it should be royalty* ;). I think I would probably abuse the feather boa/Elton John smiley.* Okay, I definitely would... BurningStar4 03-28-2005, 10:47 PM Yes, "royalty" would be a nice medium :) And I would definitely abuse the "Elton John" smiley....I mean come on, Elton is just way too fab. OldWiz 03-28-2005, 11:00 PM i believe that peckish means that you are hungry. how long have you been on the island, OldWiz? Run! BurningStar, Run! OldWiz is confused again. :lol2: Well, I was going to say 'I get my peevers and my peck.... confused, but there are children present. Plus I thought you might get 'peeverish' with me... Halfrek: Oddly enough, your definition of 'peckish' is correct, but it also means 'somewhat irritable, Easily irritated or annoyed - cranky , fractious , irritable , nettlesome , peevish ... Which I believe describes me appropriately... BurningStar4 03-28-2005, 11:05 PM Okay, so OldWiz is not going to eat me, whew! :) Well, I was going to say 'I get my peevers and my peck.... confused, but there are children present. Plus I thought you might get 'peeverish' with me... Oh my :roflmao: OldWiz 03-28-2005, 11:07 PM YOU TWO JUST HAD TO DO IT, DIDN'T YOU. *YOU JUST COULDN'T RESIST! *AFTER ALL WE'VE BEEN THROUGH... YOU HAD TO GO AND START ON THE STARS AGAIN! * *:fear2: If my arms were long enough, I'd spank both of you! *Instead, I'm going to tell your mommies... * OldWiz 03-28-2005, 11:17 PM Okay, so OldWiz is not going to eat me, whew! :) Oh my :roflmao: You just STOP THAT, right now, young lady... :fear3: :vampire: BurningStar4 03-28-2005, 11:20 PM Yes Dad  OldWiz 03-29-2005, 12:11 AM Starlite: Interestingly enough, I started my college career in Psych, focused on Abnormal and Parapsychology - I was interested in how women think...  Course, then I realized that that topic really fell under the realm of 'magic' and so my path led me into the Mystical Arts, with a minor in Enchantments and Ensorcelments... and I don't know any more now about that subject that I did back then!!! ;) BurningStar4 03-29-2005, 12:29 AM I love Abnormal Psychology....which probably leads me into my career with the criminals with Forensic Psych. Parapsychology is such a cool subject, it's just a shame not many places offer courses in it (and I don't even think you can get a major in it). If you wanted to learn more about women, you should of took "women's studies" I'm in that class right now, there are about 50 women and 3 guys. Poor guys :( But we all need people who love the mystical arts. There was a kid in a class with me who believed he was a wizard and could cast spells on people, I didn't argue with him, I would see him "casting spells" outside of class everyday :lol2: OldWiz 03-29-2005, 12:53 AM Women's Studies??? Child, it was a totally different world back then! The only way to 'learn' how women 'think' (which was the point of my joke) was to 'pursue, and woo' , which I think they call 'stalking' in today's world. :( Parasychology (which is just another word for 'magic') was my passion back then. My wife and I actually took the Rhine tests at UCLA since we seemed to have a more than 'normal' understanding of one another. We scored way above the norm in the empathy tests and she seemed to be able to 'read' me more than I could her, naturally. Ever watch Medium? The results were something like that... the poor guy is alway 2 steps behind and looking in the wrong direction! ;D BurningStar4 03-29-2005, 01:03 AM Women's Studies??? The results were something like that... the poor guy is alway 2 steps behind and looking in the wrong direction! ;D I keep forgetting how much older you are then me :( Well trust me, you wouldn't want to be in my women's studies class, the women in there are pretty bashful towards men :-\ I feel so bad for the guys in our class, they just keep saying, "not all guys are like that!" but the women just keep saying "oh yes they are!" From what I understand parapsychology now incorporates the study of paranormal behavior....not just magic, unless you consider magic to incorporate paranormal activity. I think magic is magic and paranormal activity is more of ghosts and trying to discover their existence. I have no idea what I'm trying to say, but whatever, it's late :P OldWiz 03-29-2005, 01:29 AM My definition of magic is: Anything that science has no explanation for... yet! ;D Since I, also, keep forgetting how 'literally' you take things, I better explain: parapsychology (back then) is almost exactly the same as it is today (i.e. telepathy, telekinesis, paranormal activity, etc.) - because science has made no progress (or very little) in obtaining empirical evidence regarding the subject. I suspect some progress has been made since the invention of the MRI although I imagine it's a bit tough to conduct conclusive experiments when the subjects head is in a big tube (Joke!). It is basically the study of the 'unknown' and perhaps, 'unknowable'. Since we only use about 10% of our brains (some more, some less...) there seemed like a lot of 'room' to work in (semi-joke). Which is why it fascinated me - it's as close to my definition of magic as there is. When I discovered that, to achieve my ambition, it would take 12 years of school to become a psychiatric specialist, I decided that I'd rather make money and got a degree in Economics instead, but spent the last 40 years in computers (yes, they were just invented back then). There you have it, more than you ever wanted to know about OldWiz.. Hope you did well with your paper... BurningStar4 03-29-2005, 01:39 AM Well then we're on the same page - with the parapsychology thing. I have heard it takes quite a long time to get into psychiatry, that's why I'm going with psychology, a few less school years (plus I don't have to worry about getting a MD)....and I need to negate as many school years as I can, or I'll go crazy. There is this big debate somewhere on here about pseudoscience vs. science and no one really has a clear cut idea of where it starts/ends. You'd probably be good posting in that thread lol. I gave my best guess, but it's probably not anywhere near accurate. OldWiz 03-29-2005, 01:53 AM Dear: The forum is called NERDS of which I am a proud member! We are having a great time discussing an obscure genius named Tesla who lived and worked at the beginning of the 20th century. His work is shrouded in mystery and surrounded by a whole army of conspiracy -theorists (really - NO JOKE) and it is really fun examining the possibility that JJ is basing some of the concepts for LOST on the work done by this man. The feeling is that JJ loves to use fantastic, but plausible concepts (which cannot be disproved) in his shows, a la Rembaldi in Alias. We are all busy trying to discover which of Tesla's theories fit the 'facts' we know about the island and it's inhabitants. Real serious stuff over there and I don't dare be facetious or sarcastic at all. You'd enjoy it... BurningStar4 03-29-2005, 01:57 AM Well actually the thread was a different one then "NERDS", and someone from "NERDS" (I would presume) came in and mentioned Telsa and some info they had and posted some links so I read a little bit about him and his work and I think the stuff is really neat. I'll check out the NERDS ship though :) Thanks! |
