View Full Version : "Over time, others have been lost..???
OldWiz 09-29-2006, 02:51 PM At the very beginning of the recap, Fenry said something that stuck in my mind as important, but I forgot to write it down. The quote was about the island itself and was something like 'Over time, others have been lost (or visited) on the island' and then showed the Black Rock ship, and the 4-toed statue. I know those aren't the exact words, but the implication is really VERY important.
It implies the mysterious nature of the island existed long before Dharma, et. al. We suspect the Black Rock slave ship dates back to the late 1800's and the 4-toed statue implies something considerably older.
If this is true, it really throws off a lot of our speculations, I think. Does anyone else think this might be significant? Also, can someone provide the exact wording, please?

Siobhan 09-29-2006, 03:00 PM Old Wiz,
I don't have the exact quote but I agree that it is an important point. I think (and hope) there is a lot more to this Island than just DHARMA et al. I remember something one of TPTB said a while back about the long history of this Island and that as far as we know no one had ever gotten off.
jennylee27 09-29-2006, 03:05 PM Hey, I dug the episode out of tivo's trash just for you. The quote is:
Many people have been drawn to the island throughout time, lost in their travels, and lost in their lives.
I agree that it probably has implications. But don't ask me what they are just yet!
LostLaura 09-29-2006, 03:09 PM Oh, thanks, OldWiz. In the thread I started in this forum, I said that there was no mention of the 4-toed statue. I'll amend that post. I was facing away from the TV when the recap show started, thinking I still had a minute before it was starting. I turned around as soon as I heard Fenry's voice, but had missed the first 30 seconds or so. Go figure!
Jenny, I have yet to check my thread in a little while, but there's another quote I'm looking for over there... maybe you can help? If you didn't already... I'll go check. :hypocrit:

Thanks so much!!! (I was kicking myself for deleting it too soon.). :hammer:
It was said so casually that it was easily overlooked but if those words are true, then I think we are going to be exploring completely new territory soon.

Sure sure, just let me know what you need. The dissertation can always wait for Lost!

I hope you're 'disserting' on Lost: The Phenomena and the Psychological Chaos It Has Created - Broken Hearts, Broken Spirits, Broken Lives...

danasully 09-30-2006, 12:41 AM It could give credence to the fact that the are all somehow "Lost in their lives".
I loved how many times the word "Lost" was used in the recap. Gee - could the number of times Fenry said "lost" be significant??????????????? LOL -
Save The Humans 09-30-2006, 12:42 AM "Many people have been drawn to the island throughout time, lost in their travels, and lost in their lives."
Yup. Yup. Yup.
TPTB have said we will get the Island's backstory over the course of the series. It really IS sounding like the Island is far more powerful than any of the people upon it!
Good. The Others will get theirs, then!
RodimusBen 09-30-2006, 07:14 AM Sounds to me like they may be setting the island up as a place that continues to pull people in and manipulate their fates, not just with our Losties but for thousands of years.
I wonder if we'll be told about what happened to the Black Rock and the 4 toed foot or if we'll see it in a flashback somehow.
LostIslandBaby 09-30-2006, 09:51 AM Maybe it means that those who are already "lost" in their lives end up on the island somehow. The island draws them in, knowing that they are lost souls.
GettinLost 09-30-2006, 08:29 PM Not only was there the Black Rock and whoever built the 4-toed statue, but there's also been:
- Danielle's boat and crew
- The Nigerian Drug plane
- Desmond's boat
- and... The 1940's plane at the cave where "Adam and Eve" were found in the first Season.(huge Amelia E. speculation in Season 1 on the Fuse.)
- and I'm sure there will be countless others.
I'm wonderering "who" or "what" is going to wash up on the shore after the last EMP was released!!!!!!!
I imagine the fact that this Island has "magnetic" energy has drawn people physically to the Island for years.
LostLaura 09-30-2006, 09:02 PM Sure sure, just let me know what you need. The dissertation can always wait for Lost!
:) We were looking for the quote about why the plane broke apart... it sounded like it was planned, like the passengers were all on the plane for a reason. It was an interesting line, if you could find it. Thanks!
Fogey 10-01-2006, 01:00 AM Well if the Atlantic can have the Sargasso Sea I guess the Pacific could have Lost Island.
I would enjoy some back story on the lost civilization that left the foot on the island, but where have all those people gone?
lostoholic 10-01-2006, 02:18 AM I think they did a great job on the recap! Wondering why there was no Danielle. Any thoughts.

Letty 10-01-2006, 03:48 PM It definitely has some significance. And dear lord I've been hung up on the four-toed statue since they aired that episode. AUGH. NEED TO KNOW.
carfreak2128 10-01-2006, 03:51 PM I think i remember producers saying somewhere that the stautue was between 50 and 100 years old. But idk.
seaquelost 10-01-2006, 04:08 PM I think i remember producers saying somewhere that the stautue was between 50 and 100 years old. But idk.
It's age would be more like a millennia I would think.

Yes, a number of lost people have landed up on this island. From all that I have read about this show is that it is an island for those that have lost their way. Pretty much clears it up that it's not purgatory. Some people are still holding onto that one.
~Alex~ 10-10-2006, 04:51 AM I haven't been here for ages (no Internet) it's good to be back!
I have always thought of the Island as having 2 (basic) 'sides' to it; the Spiritual side, and the Physical side. For example; the Plane crashing onto the Island because of Magnetic Force would be Physical, and the other reasons behind the Plane crashing (e.g 'Fate') , and why specific people were on the plane would be Spiritual.
I agree that the Island seems to have drawn people who are 'lost' in life to it-so the title of the show would have a P&S meaning aswell.
I also agree that the Island is probabley being set up as a place 'lost' people are consistantly drawn to. So when you think about it the show could go on for ages-just with different people.
It (vaguely) reminds me of the 'Saw' films-ln the way that they are all there to experience certain things and learn certain things using their wits and past experiences in life-or possibly die trying.
Maybe the ones who follow their 'Path' in life on the Island (assuming that doesn't involve them dying!) correctly will be the ones who survive at the end?
Also the four-toed foot statue just plain freaked me out! :eek2: One of the first thoughts that came into my mind was that it looked Roman...
Tiffany0204 10-18-2006, 12:41 PM I'm sorry if this is in the wrong area or whatnot, I'm new here so just learning.
I work during primetime and therefore have watched Lost via the boxed season. I don't recall seeing any episodes entitled "A Tale of Survival". Did I miss something? Sorry to sound so naive, but I just recently got into Lost. Thanks for the help! :)
seaquelost 10-18-2006, 12:55 PM Tiffany, it's not really an episode. It was an hour long "recap" of what we've already seen in S1 and S2. Mainly to get non-viewers of the first two seasons "caught up" in preparation of S3. You can watch it, if you want, on abc.com. They have it entitled, "Sneak Peek"
Tiffany0204 10-18-2006, 01:22 PM Ahhhh the infernal abc.com. Unfortunatly unless you're Amercian, you cannot watch it on the website. It's for american viewers only :)
I'm searching for other ways to be able to watch the episodes for free... without risk of spyware and whatnot. Thanks for the info, though.

Old Wiz!
The Lost City of Atlantis and the Bermuda Triangle, could these be implied? That's the first thing that popped into my head when I saw that statue. Your thoughts?
pleasance 11-11-2006, 08:23 AM Perhaps the island is where "Lost" things turn up. Look at all the biros that Boone finds in the Pilot episode! How many explorers and ships and aeroplanes have vanished, apparently without trace........ George Bass (of Bass and Flinders fame), the French explorer La Perouse, then there is Amelia Earhardt and Fredrick Noonan, Charles Kingsford Smith, Glen Miller (Isn't it "Moonlight Serenade" that Sayid and Hurley hear played across the ether?)....Perhaps the Lost island is the Pacific Ocean's answer to the Bermuda Triangle. I have just been reading an article on the disappearance of "Flight 19"...is there a connection between the island and the Bermuda Triangle?
hmmmm....

Bolding mine.
When we first saw that Kate and Sawyer were going to be busting up rocks and moving them, what went through my mind was the Stephen King book "Tommyknockers". The main character is walking in the woods and trips over what seems to be an old beer can but turns out to be a big old spaceship that's been there for zillions of years.
Maybe the Others have tripped over their own version of "the old beer can" and are busily digging it out (putting K&S to work on it also to keep them busy/break them down), not realizing that it's actually connected to the ancient 4-toed statue in some way (or maybe they do realize).
Farfetched, but it insists on popping in my brain every time I see them out there busting up rocks, LOL.
Along the same lines, that's basically how Locke/Boone found the hatch way back when.
Lisa :)

Thanks for posting this; I've been trying to find the recap and haven't had any luck! :)
lovelost4815162342 11-24-2006, 04:35 PM "Many people have been drawn to the island throughout time, lost in their travels, and lost in their lives."
Then there are probably even more people on the island that maybe the others have been observing also? Maybe people who end up on the island are only people with many flaws in their lives, and the island gets these people and brings them together?. I dunno im just working off of "lost in their lives". this is probably a very important quote, and im sure wel find out later exactly what it means. At least i hope!

You're very welcome  I knew it'd come in useful for someone =D
annie_monica 12-10-2006, 09:56 PM Does he mean that the Others have captures losties before? And turned them into some sort of science project? "Thank God I joined the Dharma Initiative!" -Kelvin
