but maybe there is more to it. AL was shot the first time and it killed her baby. maybe its not meant to be the stomach, but the womb. although i bet Disney would also have a problem if a shot was explicitly to the womb.

The stomach is the easiest place to hit with a gun, I think, because it's the person's center of gravity?

I think the producers are actually trying to be realistic - hear me out.

I recently took a pistol class and the instructor said that 9 times out of 10 an amateur with a pistol will hit a spot down and to the left of where they were actually aiming. (Well, right-handed amateurs anyway, a leftie would hit down and to the right)

This is because most people instictively curl their finger around the trigger because it is easier to sqeeze that way (as opposed to using just the tip of the finger) and as they pull the trigger the hand muscles naturally move the gun in that direction. It's natural, it's common.

So if the amateur shooters (Michael, Sun) were aiming for the center of their chest (again, the most common and natural place to aim - the head is a relatively small target) then most likely they will hit their lower-right abdomen which is exactly where they all got shot.

It's an eerie consistency, isn't it?
Now the real question that remains is: Did Colleen recently have sex with someone to whom she is not married? or even think about it, so as to include Libby in the "island curse"? Given the revelations in the flashback, is Sun next??? :eek2:

I guess it would be more gruesome any other way. Even if they did good camera work and you didn't see so much of it, it would still effect the viewer more than seeing them get shot in the stomach.

Shannon was about center torso - hard to tell exactly given the shots they show of her. Right in the ten ring so it shows AL was a good shot. She died almost instantly so it would have had to hit something vital - probably her lungs.

Ana Lucia got it right between the twins so to speak :p Not exactly a gut shot.

Libby was indeed a gut shot and hence she died slowly for great dramatic effect.

Colleen also got it in the gut so that gives the others a chance to save her. We'll see what happens.

But for the most part I agree with the fact that it avoids having to do a head shot. You've only got 2 options for a lethal shot : head and torso. Special effects-wise its a lot easier to do it in the torso under some clothes where all you need to do is put in some squibs. Also a gut shot is more dramatic since it not always lethal.

I think it has alot more to do with what will get past the censors. You will notice that you dont see the shooter at the same instant that you see the wound being made.
A gut shot can be 'held' by the victim, and get the point across, w/o running afoul of those same censor guys. It is only very recently that you could get away with this sort of thing anyway.

I agree that they are all "body shots" but slightly different. Colleen's looked more like a hip shot. Much off to the side compared to Libby.

However, Ben's people do seem to prefer the execution stance, they just haven't pulled the trigger yet.
