View Full Version : Why does Ben Linus want the boat so badly?

Forgive me if this is already threaded, but The Others already have a motor boat, and besides I get the feeling the Others' leadership prefers to be on the island. Does he feel it's a threat by giving the Losties an avenue of escape? If so, wouldn't they just "sail around in circles?" He sure seems adament about wanting it. Notice he says "I want that boat" and not "Destroy that boat"

Good question. One possible reason could be that some areas of the Island can only be reached by sea (and/or Others controlled underground tunnels). Ben would not want the Losties stumbling onto something they should not see (but what?).

Notice when he said that, it was after Colleen climbed down the ladder. They were under something, I think water. I think he didn't want the Losties to have the sailboat, because they might stumble onto the above-water entrance to whatever that thing is that they're in with Jack.

I think Benjamin wanted the boat for practical reasons mentioned by Colleen but also he's got his own "control freak" thing going on. We've already sensed some tension between him and some the Others. How many hours does he spend watching all those monitors and listening in on the things people are saying?

I think you're right. Watching it again, Coleen does say "They could find us".

They gave their motor boat to Micheal for him and Walt to leave the island. So we are to assume that they don't have a boat now. I don't expect Micheal to return it out of the goodness of his heart.

I thought it was odd too... especially since Juliet was so, "so what, they sail in circles, big deal" about it.

Exactly. That's why he wants that boat, so the Losties can't sail around and bump into their secret little hideaway.

If Michael took the only boat (which I don't think is the case) it must mean that there are other ways of getting off of the island, right? Via plane? They would not give their only source for leaving away to someone else.

I thought it was so Ben could tempt Jack with the possibility of going home. Ben needs a boat to make that offer.

I think Colleen cleared this up in the same conversation.

No transcripts up as yet but it went something like this...

JULIET: So, they have a boat. Sailing in circles will keep 'em busy

COLEEN: They could find us.

And that's why Ben wants the boat.

Or that's one of the reasons, he probably has alterior motives.

That's what I'm saying - by sailing around in circles, they could find "us" - and where are "us" right as they're saying that? Under something. Most likely under water. And could be found by sailing. That's what has Ben panicked.

They're in The Hydra when they have that conversation, the part where they are keeping Jack is underwater.

They would sail in circles because that's what happens, it happened to Desmond, it would have happened to Michael & Walt had Ben not given them specific instructions to follow a bearing of 325.

Sayid would have eventually sailed round and scouted the entire island, he would have found them, found Othersville.

For that reason, though possibly not just that reason, Ben wanted that boat.

That's very true... if Sayid found them, he'd organize a real attack, and descend upon the Others, killing them, and ruining whatever their goal is on the island.

Then part of the Hydra is under ground? Colleen climbed down a ladder to get to Ben and Juliette.

Yeah, the underwater section is underground, that's where Jack is.

Sawyer and Kate are in the above ground section, but it's all the same facility.

The Hydra.

The boat was a strategic advantage for the Losties and Sayid was foolhardy to lose it to the Others, unless he left a tracking device on board the ship.

There's somthing going on between Ben and Juliet there too. Another reason he wanted the boat could be that in saying so he was agreeing more with Colleen than Juliet. You know, a bit of spite.

I think Ben is smart enough to know that there MIGHT be someone among them capable of sailing by the stars instead of trying to use the compass. The stars don't care what kind of magnetic field is afoot and work as a wonderful guide to sailors who know how to use them. Remember, they probably know Jin's background. What are the odds that he knows how to sail by starlight?
