in the Detroit Free Press, it is reported that scientists actually created a cloaking device:

"In this case it's microwaves, and someone measuring them wouldn't be able to tell they had passed around an object. The hope is to do the same for light waves.

Looking at a cloaked item, Smith explained: "One would see whatever is behind the cloak. That is, the cloak is, ideally, transparent. Since we do not have a perfect cloak at this point, there is some reflection and some shadow, meaning that the background would still be visible just darkened somewhat.

The ideal cloak would have nearly negligible reflection and virtually no shadowing, Smith said. "This first experiment has provided a confirmation that the mechanism of cloaking can be realized, we now just need to improve the performance of cloaking structures."

In addition to hiding things, redirecting electromagnetic waves could prove useful in protecting sensitive electronics from harmful radiation, Smith commented."

So, we could infer that the island was cloaked due to the electromagnetic anomolies of the island and was visible during each distruption. Maybe not so sci-fi after all!!!

I work at a newspaper and saw that story on the wire the other night and immediately thought of Lost. I have a tough time buying into the sci-fi elements; this makes me more willing to believe the island is invisible to the outside world.

The concept has been around for quite a while. I have even seen it on TV in a show about future weapons technology. But as far as the island goes, we don't have to take it that far. The use of camouflage and or misdirection to prevent things from being seen by passing planes has been around at least since WW I Plus the island is apparently not located within the shipping lanes or under standard flight corridors.

Dharma also probably has electronic surveillance in place to intercept satellite transmissions and scrub the island out. Similar to the way networks televising ball games remove advertisements painted on stadium walls and substitute images from their advertisers.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who immediately thought of LOST instead of Harry Potter!!!

Uh-oh. We're getting closer. That seriously freaks me out. Personally, I hope scientists never figure out to make a flawless cloak. That would be so scary!!!

I saw this mentioned in Popular Science magazine a couple of months back. It is pretty amazing some of the technology that is out there that has yet to be discovered or completed. If we can do this, what is next?

Invisibility cloak.. that is so cool and yet.. so scary...
How would you know if there was some invisibile person creeping behind you and following you into your house.. the existence of that would make everyone paranoid :eek2:

It's pretty amazing....
But if the world can do this?
Why can't we cure diseases like Cancer and AIDS?
