View Full Version : Paulo... the new Sawyer
kokobware 11-02-2006, 02:28 AM I think Paulo is slowly becoming the type of character that Sawyer started out being. Maybe not the depth that he has, but he's clearly the new aloof guy who cares about himself (and possibly Nicki) and that's about it. I'd say both characters need some more development and they could be alright. That being said, I'd still rather have Eko around and not two more new characters.
RodimusBen 11-02-2006, 03:36 AM To me, he just seems to not care much about any of the larger goings-on, rather than being belligerent like Sawyer.
VENOM 11-02-2006, 03:38 AM It seems like he doesn't have the charisma of Sawyer...which is why Sawyer works in the 1st place.
Regardless, it is too soon to judge him either way.
AnalogKid 11-02-2006, 06:42 AM Both him and Nikki stick out like sore thumbs to me, and seem to be trying too hard. It just all feels so wrong. Can they be next please?
jellyfrog 11-02-2006, 06:54 AM I agree with VENOM about Sawyer's charisma. He may not have been likeable, but he has always been interesting.
Paolo is no Saywer. He is not interesting. From what we've seen so far Paolo is selfish, not too bright, and consistently annoying.
TPTB are obvious going out of their way to make sure that we don't like this guy, and my question is why? Is he going to be the next bad guy? Or are they setting him up so that they can have another death on the show without making the fans angry? Do they want him to be the next Ana-Lucia (except that personally I liked her )?
Pulpy Austinite 11-02-2006, 06:56 AM i dont like how Nikki was basically a hooters girl. hwat with her boobs popping out and the way she carried herself. not that she wasnt hot, but it didnt feel right for the show.
The Tampa Job 11-02-2006, 07:00 AM I remember reading somewhere that the creators were originally looking for an arrogant, business-man type of charecter for sawyer, but we're blown away by JH's potrayal as the southern charmer. Perhaps this "pretty-boy" attitude paulo seems to have could be them finally getting to go down that path?
dietcoke 11-02-2006, 07:17 AM I think Paulo seems to have a personality more like Charlie :ohwell:, than Sawyer. The whole scene where he uses the bathroom reminded me of Charlie. I don't think Paulo resembles early Sawyer at all. During Sawyer's first few episodes, I pretty much hated him and didn't think he was interesting at all. I only thought he was an annoying jerk and just mean as hell. It wasn't until Sawyer started showing his flirty and vulnerable side that I started to open up to him. Paulo seems much more low key.
RodimusBen 11-02-2006, 08:09 AM I disagree with the Nikki as Hooters girl comment. She happens to be an attractive young woman, that's all. She's going to stick out in a group of sweaty guys.
the wretched 11-02-2006, 03:53 PM I'm not a fan of new characters but maybe the new characters will add something the other characters have not... for example, Nikki was able to figure out they might want to check out the other screens. An idea that hadn't occurred to the men in the scene. Maybe the new characters will bring a new perspective that is needed? But then again, I wouldn't mind if Nikki or Paulo were the next to go.... I feel like the new characters just take away time from the characters I've grown to love.
whispervixen 11-02-2006, 04:00 PM At first I wasn't a fan of them.. and I suppose I'm still not really but I found them being there quite funny in last night's episode.. and random .
Paulo doesn't remind me Sawyer tho.
interested 11-02-2006, 04:01 PM It all seems so very contrived. The taillies were real characters, seemlessly introduced, gradually developed. These people come out of nowhere and join in all the reindeer games. It's just...weird. I hope they are just introducing them as fodder so that they don't end up having to kill of anymore of the original cast.
But I suppose they needed at least one more available woman for all those desperate men, because the ladies keep dying off.
Ginge 11-02-2006, 05:04 PM for example, Nikki was able to figure out they might want to check out the other screens. An idea that hadn't occurred to the men in the scene.
To me, that came off as the writers 'dumbing down' the men (most notably, Locke) in an attempt to make Nikki look smart.
Fuyuko 11-02-2006, 05:09 PM Paulo doesn't have the screen presence of Sawyer. Even when Sawyer was being a jerk, he was interesting. Paulo is just very uncharismatic. Frankly, I hope he becomes ben-fodder. Very soon.
Tiny Time Machine 11-02-2006, 05:13 PM If Paulo is the new Sawyer I think that speaks quite clearly of the decline in this show's quality...
lostlocke 11-02-2006, 05:16 PM No way, Paulo has nothing on Sawyer! Right away Josh/Sawyer had great chemistry with the other actors and characters. So far Paulo hasn't struck me that way.
mooze 11-02-2006, 05:22 PM I didn't understand why Paolo didn't seem at all interested in anything that was going on while they were in the Pearl. He wasn't watching the movie with Nikki, he wasn't watching Sayid, he was just... being uninvolved. That seemed odd to me for someone who was "whining about not being included".
jmsh44 11-02-2006, 05:48 PM Paulo does reminds me of Sawyer. They both are cynical and can be a bit of an ***. The only difference I see though, is that Sawyer tends to be a bully, taking things out on other people. Paulo doesn't give me that impression. I personally like the character. Oh, and I think the only reason he went on that trek was because Nikki was going, not that he wanted to help out. It seemed like he went to look after her.
Paulo the new Sawyer? Never!
He is just there, as is this Nikki chick. I don't like them. They are boring and I hope good old smokey will deal with them, soon!
Maybe it is just the way, they were introduced.
But I didn't like when Nikki tried to be smart in the Pearl at the cost of Locke (well, we all had the same thought as she had, so why wouldn't Locke have???), and I hated when she jumped at Hurley in Episode 3... No, away I say! But at least she had some text, Paulo, wellthe toilet sequence said it all... flushed away!

It's funny, but that exact description could have been used on Boone in the second part of the pilot episode. Just replace "Nikki" with "Shannon" and hey presto!
funklord 11-02-2006, 07:55 PM Nicki was useful as a blank slate, used by the writers to push the plot forward a tad. Paolo? Well, he went to the bathroom. Nice contribution.
bryce110 11-02-2006, 08:18 PM Paulo = Sawyer + Hurley - funny
Mascara108 11-02-2006, 08:37 PM I dont know if paulo is the new sawyer, but i think he is definitley interesting and could have a dark side. I only hope they dont ruin his character - sawyer is so boring and dumb to me now, he's like only there to make very bad jokes and to oggle kate (who is now also very boring, but thats another thread) . paulo has more potential at this stage.
Nikki - loving her. attractive, smart confident. cant wait to see more.
Angela12 11-02-2006, 08:41 PM I don't think Paulo is the new Sawyer; I think that Nikki and Paulo are the new Shannon and Boone. Their dynamic immediately reminded me of our poor departed Losties, except they'll never replace them. :(
GettinLost 11-02-2006, 09:51 PM When I first saw him I thought the same thing... I am currently having a crisis of faith over my favorite character (Sawyer) and figured they have introduced him to have him "warming up in the bull pen" as the replacement pitcher.
I don't think he will ever "be" Sawyer - Josh Holloway created the role of Sawyer from his incredible amount of talent, but they may be up to "something" with him...

I have heard that also and although Shannon and Boone were not my favorites, I have a loyal attachment to our originals that I don't have so much for the newbcomers. They were just purely annoying last night.
jheri 11-02-2006, 10:45 PM I like the old Sawyer and there is no subsitute.
Don't really know about these two new characters yet,
but I think that the show has enough characters already to work with.
I don't want to get too confused, cause that would be hard to do. lol
lostfan88 11-02-2006, 11:15 PM To me, that came off as the writers 'dumbing down' the men (most notably, Locke) in an attempt to make Nikki look smart.
That is exactly what I said to my friend when we were watching. And as I told my sister, no one should make Locke (or Sayid) look stupid, for he's one of the smartest people on the island, IMO.
About Paulo... he didn't remind me of Sawyer. Maybe it's just me, but last night he reminded me of early episodes Shannon (bit clueless, focusing only on himself and his looks) while Nikki was Boone (trying to prove herself that she could do something just as Boone helped Locke and tried to save the drowning woman). Again, maybe I was the only one who thought that and that's fine.
