Why would they let sawyer off the hook for a day?

Was it a test?
IE: sawyers broken , kate isnt

I wondered if Pickett wasn't just giving him the day off because he knew he was going to execute him - kinda like a "last supper" for an inmate on death row. Why make a man work on the day he's gonna be killed?

I think its just because they were going to take Kate straight to Jack maybe. But then she insisted and they had to take them to 'work' first, then take Kate from there.

It seems to me that he was trying to play up Kate's fears that Sawyer would be killed. And what better way to have her worry than have Sawyer out of site all day. Don't get me wrong, I think Pickett would love the oppurtunity to kill Sawyer for no reason what so ever, but Tom, Alex, and Juliet also played into Kate's fears of Sawyer being killed. Tom with the last night to say anything comment (maybe trying to further along Kate and Sawyer's origional purpose for being taken) Alex sayinf he is going to kill your boyfreind (either being nice, wanting K/S to somehow help Karl, or in with Juliet) and Juliet's comment that she wouldn't let Sawyer die if Kate helped her (obviously to get Kate to make Jack to botch the operation on Ben)

Those control freaks? Are you kidding? If they wanted Kate in a particular place, they'd take her there and that would be the end of it. They wouldn't have to explain anything to Sawyer.

I think Sawyer was supposed to have the day off because the day before he had gotten his *** beat worse than ever before while being with the Others. They probably thought he wouldn't be very productive, which is true I think. You can tell he is moving along very slowly while working.

My first thought was that they were definitely going to do something to Sawyer, kill him maybe, but I think all the time he wanted Kate to watch so I doubt they would have killed him if Kate would have been working.
