View Full Version : 2 smoke monsters
MFOTHER 11-13-2006, 09:14 AM anyoine think there are two conflicting monsters.........one good one bad? locke saw light, eko saw black. THe light/ dark idea was so prominent in the first season, but seemed to fall of in season 2 (unless im just missing them)
im not putting alot into the whole 2 monsters idea, but it would be awesome to have one character have a confrontation with one monster, and then seeing the second one appear, maybe have a smoke battle over the fate of the character.
Actually, I was thinking about something like that too....
KyleSBeaver 11-13-2006, 09:28 AM That theory has been around for awhile. I've always thought that there was a white smoke monster and a black smoke monster. Ever since Locke thought the monster was beautiful when he first saw it, and then in the Season 1 finale, when he went after it, it terrified him. It wasn't what he thought it was.
Toxi51 11-13-2006, 10:00 AM The 2 monster theory is good, but going by that last post, Locke would have seen both monsters (two full close-ups if I remember correctly) and would have known. Also he tells Eko that is was light and/or beautiful.
Funny how he doesn't mention that second close encounter......
very-lost 11-13-2006, 12:41 PM There are alot of things that they don't mention to each other. :undecide:
Toxi51 11-13-2006, 12:43 PM True, but Locke seems to always have his own agenda
PhillyGirl2873 11-13-2006, 01:00 PM Actually I have a theory about the smoke monster, but I think it is only one monster. I've subscribed to some other smoke monster threads, but haven't really read through them all yet, but I have seen that some people are thinking along the same lines. So now I guess it's time to write it all down. Here's my basic theory...
I think it is one monster and as some people have said I think it can take different forms, like Jack's dad, Yemmi, etc. But I think it is always testing people in these forms. So go back to the beginning, Locke saw the smoke monster and saw it as a white light. He thought it was beautiful. This was after a few days on the island and he was still in awe of the island and his ability to walk again, so I think it's significant that he saw it as beautiful when he was in that state of mind.
Then Jack starts seeing his Dad (which I think was the smoke monster), and he was sleep deprived and thought he was going crazy. He almost ran off the cliff running after his dad, but Locke saved him. I think this was the smoke monster testing his mental state and it makes me think of this ellusive "sickness." Could the sickness be a mental illness and is the smoke monster (the security system that's job is to protect the island) looking for people affected with the sickness and killing them to protect the island?
So then when Locke saw the Smoke monster the second time he was obsessed with the hatch, he was not in the same mental state as he was before, and I think the smoke monster saw him as sick the second time and attacked him. Everyone that saw visions, were in a different state of mind and I think this was the smoke monster testing them to see if they were sick. Hurley and Dave. Kate and the horse. Eko and Ana Lucia and Yemmi. If you look at their state's of mind during those episodes, I think they all had a certain mental break-down that the smoke monster would consider "the sickness."
Anyway, this theory is not completely hashed out, but it starting to come together. I don't think all visions were the smoke monster. For instance I'm not so sure about Walt being the smoke monster, but I'm going to be watching closely and possibly go back and watch these episodes to see if I see anything else to tie it all together.
So what do you think? Am I crazy? :p
whitedog 11-16-2006, 09:44 PM Why does the smoke monster not attack Eko the first time the two encounter each other? Maybe the first smokey Eko meets was the good one and the second was its evil twin.
LovesLaboursLost 11-16-2006, 10:40 PM Why does the smoke monster not attack Eko the first time the two encounter each other? Maybe the first smokey Eko meets was the good one and the second was its evil twin.
Perhaps because in the first encounter, Eko was penitent and quoted the scriptures to demonstrate his faith. This smokey judged as "good", and so left Eko alone.
In the second encounter, Eko says "I wish to be forgiven for nothing" and goes on to say that, as a victim of circumstance,he no longer feels any guilt. This smokey judged as "bad" and decided to get rid of him.
PhillyGirl2873 11-17-2006, 08:27 AM I think because the first time he was healthy in mind and body and the second time he was sick and mentally tormented.
very-lost 11-17-2006, 12:14 PM Kinda makes you wonder how come Danielle has lasted so long :undecide:

 I didn't think about that. There goes my whole theory.

I hate when that happens! :D
I noticed in one of my viewings something that might be of interest. In, TCOL, Eko is stumbling around the jungle. In one shot, it cuts away from him to show a brief bit of white light, it reminded me of lighting I see at rock concerts, like a cone of light. After it a bit of flashback, we see Mr. Eko again stumbling through the jungle. This time he encounters a blinding flash of white light that almost saturates the screen. In the background, we here the tell-tale clickity-click sound (like the numbers on the counter in the Hatch when it's reset). *Immediately* after that, the three dead dudes appear etc.
Does Smokey have two modes, light and dark? I think that's a good guess.
Man do I want to see what John saw when he was on the ground with Smokey hovering over him in Walkabout!
PhillyGirl2873 11-17-2006, 04:30 PM Yeah, I don't theorize very often, but I hate when it gets shot down too soon. Oh well.
Light and dark! D'oh, I didn't even think about that part of it.
I'll have to watch that again. No really, I plan to finish re-watching Season 2 and re-watch beginning of Season 3 during the hiatus, once I find the time.
MFOTHER 11-19-2006, 04:10 PM ok...so i have been re-watching season 2, and on annal's flashback ep. locke is working on a crossword, and the word he is working on, and the question it mentions is gilgamesh. it is the oldest written work in history...... this part about it was interesting........
3. The Nature of the Heroic. When you read the myth, notice how Gilgamesh is presented as superhuman, so powerful that the gods create a counterpart to moderate his desires and actions. Do you get the sense that Gilgamesh and Enkidu should have spared the demon of the cedar forest? Despite all of Gilgamesh's power, he is unable to prevent Enkidu's death, and the narrative changes direction. How can one describe Gilgamesh as a hero in the last half of the work? What has he achieved at the end of the poem? Why is this important?
mentions the gods creating a counter part....
