Hibbs = Sawyer IMO. He's old enough to be the real deal, plus he's obviously not adverse to murder. My guess is that he kept an eye out for young James as he grew up, knowing the kid would want revenge. I'm not sure when Hibbs got his hooks into "Sawyer", but I would say probably when "Sawyer" was in high school. He used the poor kid to gain wealth, all the while feeding his rage about his parents. Hibbs protected himself by getting "Sawyer" on his side, a kid who would never suspect him.

Wow. Had not even considered that! That would throw another wrench at the monkey!
More importantly, does Sawyer know this?

Wow--I'm mad at myself for not thinking of it first!!

Great catch, Betsy. I totally think you're right. It makes sense. It's not like Sawyer (our Sawyer) talks about his past much--so Hibbs must have found out somehow. Pretty easy to found about it if you did it yourself.

Good call! You've just gotten me thinking...that would actually make a lot of sense and be completely unexpected (for me at least!). It would be great to see that he was the real Sawyer. Although this would mean even more drama to Sawyer's (James's now ;)) already messed up life. Don't think he would now or even suspect of Hibbs, which makes it even sadder...maybe Hibbs did take him under his wing after James was just a teen. What if James saw Hibbs as sort of a father figure for him, considering he lost his father very early on??
Hmmm......
That would just be sad... :'( Poor James(Sawyer). He needs a big hug! :P

BTW, I like the name James! It suits him well! ;D

I hope Sawyer gets a 3rd ep, although we'd probably have to wait until next season. We'd probably get to see Sawyer (James) telephone Hibbs to confront him about what happened. Maybe Hibbs even admits to being Sawyer or he's able to put two and two together.

The great thing about this ep is that it really left me wanting even more of Sawyer's backstory.

Thanks, guys - truthfully, this hadn't occurred to me until long after the show ended. Someone on the other board may have thrown a potential wrench into this theory, in that: since our Sawyer wouldn't know about Hibbs, how could the writers possibly reveal it to us? I guess they could do so by making our Sawyer clueless, and letting the audience know more than our boy does.....(didn't Carlton Cuse, one of the producers/writers say in a recent TV Guide that we might be getting more Robert Patrick? I think his actual words were that we might see more of Sawyer and this guy's misadventures.....I hope so, now that I've come up with this theory!)........

I posted the same thing in my observations thread...I think you are right!

I thought the same thing once the show ended. With them planning a whole subplot around Sawyer I think that this would be perfectly ideal.

I don't think so. Hibbs looked to be 40-45.

Sawyer is early 30's i think.

Well it looked as though Sawyer was 5 or 6 when his father killed himself and his mother. I think Hibbs could feasibly be even almost 50 and Sawyer we will say is 30. That means Hibbs would have been about 25 highly possible he is the real sawyer.

I thought about that, but Hibbs can't be much over 45. We know the letter was written 28 years ago (1976), so Hibbs would have had to be 17 when he pulled off the defining con in James's life. Not impossible, but improbable.

for what it's worth... Robert Patrick is 46 Josh Halloway is 36. I got the impression that Hibbs might have been "Fauxyer's" (resurrecting someone else's term we used for ease in discussing the real Sawyer and the Sawyer we know) con man mentor. But I could see Hibbs pulling a con job on a woman quicker than the shrimp dealer. He didn't look much like a sweet talking ladies man in that shrimp truck did he? lol
