I am very excited for tonight .. the beginning is always soooo funny and the hubby actually watches it with me in the beginning ... the whole family actually has finally admitted to watching it now too so it has become quite the family thing

So seeing as how it has not started and there is not much to say yet can we discuss ....why wont Clay Aiken just admit it ? I was a huge Clay fan from way back when he auditioned... and I dont really care if he is or is not, its just that he will not admit it that is kind of weird ? Whats the point ? Is it part of his contract or something ? (are we allowed to discuss that here ... not that we care to discuss it, again there isnt much else to discuss .... yet

I read lately that Bo Bice has been really ill as of late and his career window is closing fast.

Has anyone heard Chris Daughtry's new band? All original material...really good stuff. I think him not winning was the best thing to happen to him.

Taylor Hicks looks to be having a struggle too...

Admit it Clay!!

GuanaGirlGetsLost
01-16-2007, 03:09 PM
Taylor is so original and soooo lovable that I was hoping he could avoid all of the problems ... I had not heard of any problems though ? What problems ?

Chris is fa-bu-LOUS ! I completely agree about him not winning being the best thing that could have happened to him !

How about (Whats her name that won a golden globe in Dream Girls) Amazing !! I have not seen it but I heard it was great.

I actually... own Clay's cd's.
Yup, I admitted it

Taylor's problems are from the sales end of things..his album debuted at #2 and has been free falling fast...he needs another hit song soon...

01-16-2007, 06:50 PM
Taylor never impressed me so I'm not surprised at that news. I've seen Chris around on TV Guide channel and different events. I havent heard much from him musically except that Bon Jovi song he remade... they play it on the radio here way too much.

I'm not a huge AI fan, but I do enjoy the horrible tryouts. Most of my friends watch it so I hate to be left out in coversation. I'm a little excited this season because someone from my small little town supposedly made it thru to the Hollywood round. I'll be watching for that.

Why on earth did that let that woman who butchered "Kiss" keep going and going?? That was PAINFUL!!!

Of course..it makes for great train wreck theatre...

How about the Amish kid? That was...interesting.

Here I am!
Back when Flicks n Shows opened, I suggested an AI forum there, so I'll see if anyone's posting, but I'm happy to just have our little group here on the Fuse in the chit chat section.

Tonight was fun. I'm glad AI is back. I still unabashedly enjoy this show. I actually thought that the commercials for AI were much better this year. Usually they have horrid self-promotional commercials for the website and such, but it looks like they changed their domain name to simply americanidol.com (instead of idolonfox.com) and made their commercials sleaker. Easier for me to swallow.

Anyway, I didn't like anyone tonight, even the people they sent through. The ones they sent through, you knew were going through, cause those are the types of people who make it to the next round. But, man, tomorrow night better be better than tonight. Minnesota was BAD!!!

Oh, and I thought Jewel was sweet. Is she going to be at multiple audition cities?

ETA: No one at flicksnshows yet, and that's fine by me. Oo, need to vote in the poll....

We had a huge AI thread going here last year so I asked if I could keep one here again this time around...

What a collection of oddities that show was tonight..tomorrow looks worse.

And didn't you just know the "Biggest Fan" was going to be like a vaccum as she both sucked and blowed at the same time...and then started in on them because she was SO good...wow.

How about that voice coach?? How do you think his business will fare after this fiasco?

LostLaura
01-17-2007, 12:15 AM
I was in the thread last year, silly BD!

I would think that the biggest fan would know the show well enough to know that she sucks. But, um, no.

The voice coach actually had pitch, as compared to some of the singers, but he was totally deluded about his talents being appropriate for AI.

01-17-2007, 01:03 AM
I just watched it tonight! Awwww.... too bad for us Minnesotans. Just watched the news tonight and they had some interviews with the contestants and their family and friends who made it to the next round. I actually knew about these auditions taking place in the summer of last year. Was at my dads in Minnetonka at the time taking a little vacation. It was all over the news! I really wanted to go there and check it out, but I couldn't. I had to head back home. :( lol

The next episode looks interesting.. lol saying its the worst auditions yet! Aww LOL where does this one take place? Cant remember.. Chicago?

The bad thing is that most of these people have learned over time that they may get a few minutes on tv, so they go and dress/act ridiculous. It was funny the first season or two, but it's getting a little old.

GuanaGirlGetsLost
01-17-2007, 10:01 AM
i agree... ever since william hung it seems like everyone thinks being bad/freak/mean etc will give them that 5 minutes of fame and possible fortune so they ALL come out of the woodwork !! It is starting to get old. William Hung was different in that he had the genuine innocence and didnt realize he was bad and i remember laughing so hard it hurt when i first saw him...
last night was not as entertaining as I hoped it was going to be but tonight looks promising !!!

Remember "Heath" from a few years ago? The turnip that did "Like a Virgin?" (complete with the self touching and dance routine) he was much worse than Hung as he really thought he was something great and was so shocked when Simon told him he was the worst singer in the world.

lol what an episode! :D I couldn't stop laughing when I saw that weird guy come in and tried to sing! Looked like he was some sort of stalker, or something. His eyes were freaky! Guess, maybe they just made him look like one! :D

The 'red lipstick wearing, weird hair' mother and daughter team was just plain weird. Seemed nice, but weird.

Where do they get these people? I was just watching the news tonight and they had that cowboy guy who auditioned here in Minnesota on and said he only went on the show for a joke. The producers told him to come in and entertain the judges and viewers with his bad singing. He knew he couldn't sing.

But, I guess that goes with any reality show. Just find it a bit sad.. even though its fun to watch.. just bugs me. Think it can be unfair to the fans/viewers that watch these reality shows. Don't really know what to believe.

Baileysdad
01-18-2007, 02:12 AM
It does seem as if they pushed aside the talented singers to really give us a theatre of the absurd the last few nights...

That kid who sang Unchained Melody was was pathetic...what was the reason to let him continue on and on like that other than to give the audience some laughs...?

Where do they get these folks??? I guess the opening round is for the horrid ones and when we get to hollywood we get to see some talent.

Ugh...

LostLaura
01-18-2007, 02:51 PM
I only saw the last half hour last night, but I agree with BD. They are really showcasing the weirdos, and they are letting the clips go on for too long (as well as the judges letthing them sing too long). The judges are now outright laughing at them, which I think is unnecessary. Just send them on their way.

I think Fox got plenty of feedback that people love to watch horrible auditions, so they are over-compensating. We still want to see the good people!
I've seen reviews from CNN and EW that say the same thing.

Yeah, it was so funny! Did you see the look on Ryan Seacrest's face when she came out after the audition? :D Just look away.. just look awayyyy!! :shifty1: or was it just me? :D

I especially loved it when that one guy, now I remember thanks to Baileys Dad  , who sang Unchained Melody and came out of the audition trying to collect himself. Now, wheres my stuff? Can I leave? And he just stood there for awhile with Ryan.. Ryan looked a bit confused and was trying to help him out a bit.. :D Ah, yes.. ummm you go out that way. Ok.. he continues standing there for a sec with his eyes staring at the camera. Than, he finally leaves. LOL it was just too funny! They had to edit in some creepy "I'm going to stalk you, than kill you!" like music for this guy! Look into my eyes....follow my eyes... they are so creeeepy... am I creeeeping you out? Yep, I was getting that weird vibe from him...

They do such a good job at it!

Ok I missed the first night and caught the 2nd night on tivo which I'm still in the process of watching.

I saw Simon on Oprah yesterday and he said that last nights show would show that they ran in to the worst they have ever seen in Seattle. It's almost getting out of hand at this point though. I'm sure some of the people on there are "planted" to make the judges laugh and break up their day while watching so many people audition, but seeing some people who really are trying treated like crap...I feel really embarassed for some of them. But then there's the argument that they knew what they were getting in to when they showed up to audition.

Anyway, I can't wait for the competition to start.

islandchica
01-18-2007, 09:39 PM
Does anybody wonder if maybe they're setting these people up for embarassment? I know it's all in the name of entertainment, but I'm kind of starting to wonder...

For instance, when some of the worse "singers" come out of the audition and they can't find their stuff... I know that's happened twice so far. Do you think maybe they move it just to create a more awkward moment? And also, how only one side of the door works. I know that's probably common, but the judges always have to point it out and it just makes the auditionees look, well, stupid.

I'm not trying to trash the show or anything, but it's starting to occur to me that maybe they're not really trying too hard to make people comfortable, you know?

Baileysdad
01-18-2007, 10:59 PM
I agree..the show has become more about the judges and their crackbacks and smart alec comments than about showcasing the talented singers. Did you all notice how FEW people they showed that got the golden ticket??

And what is with doing the background story on people like the hairdresser (who said he looked like Taylor Hicks) who are TERRIBLE singers and are just made to look worse.

I found it odd that moved people's belongings too...that was not an accident.

minnesotan_grl83

Yes, I agree with you on that too. I've always knew American Idol does that to people who audition for the show. Well, mostly to people who look like they can be good material for a good laugh and setting them up to look awkward in certain situations. I mean what if you had a friend, or a relative that is really shy/or has some sort of disability/disorder and you know he/she isn't a good singer goes on the show and totally gets dissed by Simon and the rest of the judges than goes off stage and the crew makes him/her look stupid.

They think they have the freedom to do this because its a reality show, anything can happen... or not happen the way they want it to.. so they do some editing to make the situation look better/outrageous/funny to the viewers. I think the crew probably did move that one guys stuff just to get his reaction and than our reaction as well.

That one chubby guy who made friends with that short wide eyed guy was on Access Hollywood tonight talking about the audition. He said he was hurt by Simon's mean comments and than said he's planning to audition again for the next Season. Of course... don't they all.

Those horrid auditions can be laughable, but can be sad and somewhat tiring all at the same time. You feel bad for the people who go on there and embarrass themselves and Simon and the rest of the judges get paid for that. I'm not trying to trash the show either.. some good can come out of it as well. But, yes, they seem to edit in all the bad singers first and than edit the good ones last. They go on and on and on and on with the bad ones and seem to show just a few of the good ones. Starting to get to me...

And there is some who admit going on as a joke.. which I find unfair and I got really annoyed by it!. We want to see the real stuff, not the fake stuff!

LostLaura
01-19-2007, 01:09 AM
I agree with the above assessments. I was annoyed about them locking up the lefthand door. It was clearly done on purpose.

They've definitely made the auditions portion of this season much more annoying, for reasons stated above. But, luckily, by the nature of the format of the show, once the real competition begins, the judges have to be backburnered for the talent. We'll hear form them and they'll be their tv personaes, but we'll hear plenty of singing. (If not, I won't be watching S6 for very long, that's for sure.)

minnesotan_grl83

See, that kinda bugs me too. They DID find some good singers in Seattle (very few, but some) and they only showed maybe, four of them. I know a lot of people only watch for the bad auditions (I'm sort of guilty of this, as well!) but I don't like how they focus SO MUCH on the bad and totally ignore the good ones. *shrug*

And there is some who admit going on as a joke.. which I find unfair and I got really annoyed by it!. We want to see the real stuff, not the fake stuff!

I heard, a couple of seasons ago (from Simon, I think?) that they don't let "fakes" audition. But I don't really see how they can filter them out, if they're really believable.

That said, American Idol is a pretty good show, and I'm becoming quite addicted to it!

minnesotan_grl83
01-19-2007, 02:30 PM
I believe this show is good too, :) but to me there'll always be about 1/3 of fake singers and a thing called editing. What I mean about fake is people who come on as a joke for entertainment. I heard Simon say he doesn't let fakes in either. But, for having to make the show look good, they will let a few in. All reality shows are like this. Not everything you see/hear is real. Editing does a major part in reality shows. I just get annoyed a bit by it.. no offense to all the fans out there.. ;) I'm a fan too. I'm still watching it.. stuff like that just bug me.

I just can't wait until all the finalists are on stage and we're voting for our favs. again!!

Wow...another weird night...

How many did we see go through?? Four?

The blues singer who has the singer dad was amazing..was his name Sundance Head? LOVED his voice. He should go far.

That last guy with the new baby was okay..he sounded off key in the beginning.

Lots of strange people out there..tomorrow looks just as weird.

Yeah, I was totally caught off guard by both of them.

LostLaura
01-24-2007, 11:36 AM
Uh, yeah, those people were really, really strange. But there were actually a few people who made me literally laugh outloud last night. Last week, I felt embarrassed for a lot of them, and also felt like the judges might be being too mean. But this week, I didn't think they were too mean at all. And some of the "singers" were just hilarious! Like the girl whose breasts were hanging out! OMG! Paula motioning for her to cover herself up. Simon staring in both horror and shock. It was really hilarious. (And, really, she didn't exactly have hot breats, but I digress...)

The backup singer was good. She needs to build confidence, but it is really, really refreshing to have a personality that isn't screaming "I'm the next American Idol! I'm the best!" Cause, um, really? Most of the people who say that have no chance of being the next American Idol.

I like Sundance Head. lol. Funny name. He's good. And while he doesn't particularly look like the next American Idol, so to speak... after both Ruben and Taylor have won--neither of them being traditionally easy to market, good-looking guys--I think Sundance won't have a big problem sailing through to the finals. And I think he'll "clean up" well. (I hope that doesn't sound mean. I really liked him.)

Other than that... the married w/ kids guy? I thought he was cute and I expected him to be great. Sometimes you can just tell by how the person is being profiled, that they are going to make it through and be great. So I was sure that he was going to be great. But, man, he wasn't very good, and I am surprised they sent him through. Really surprised. I don't think he'll make it very far, unless he works his butt off and manages to totally surprise the judges in Hollywood.

I heard, a couple of seasons ago (from Simon, I think?) that they don't let "fakes" audition. But I don't really see how they can filter them out, if they're really believable.

I used to think that, but I saw an interview on one of the entertainment tonight-ish shows with the cowboy that auditioned the first night of auditions. He said that he had auditioned for the producers and didn't make it to the round that usually goes to the 3 judges, however, the producers asked him to go ahead and go in anyway and act goofy to make the judges laugh. I guess they had been having a really rough day up to that point. But the way it was edited it was portrayed as his actual audition.

Yeah his starts were horrible. I'm a little hesitant to watch NYC tonight... or is that next week? :uhh:

I think it's tonight. I think NYC should be the most interesting so far...at least that's how the promos made it look.

Just for the record, I had the lead in my 6th grade musical (We redid it in 7th grade when the music teacher was going for her masters in music education...) and I was the only one who didn't sing her lines. Did you go to McCarthy?Yes, I think that we did. When I was in 6th grade, I went to Westlands School on Dalton Road. Dalton Road is off of Stedman Street, I believe. I used to live off of Stedman Street. Anyway, it was the music teacher that taught there that had us try out and do the musical. She went for her masters or her doctorate when I was in 7th grade at McCarthy and called us all back so we could reenact it. When I went to McCarthy, it was just 7th and 8th graders. Being, cough, a little bit older than you, LL, I think it might have added 6th graders by the time that you got there...;)...the play was called "Spindle City Sisters" and it was about the Industrial Revolution and the all the young women and the mills in the area...it was a strange topic for young kids to sing about act out, but more interesting to me now...:)

Yes, we had a bunch of great singers as well tonight! Was a 2 hr show!! I really liked this 20 yr old girl that came in without her dad knowing about it. She was so scared of telling him where she was. She missed 2 days of school to audition. She felt so unsupported and unlone.

She went on stage and sang her heart out. The judges really liked her! She was going to Hollywood. Paula thought her coming there was touching. Judges were silent when she left the stage. She just couldn't help but cry in front of them! When she came out of the door, she knelled down on the floor and just tore up again!! Ryan was sweet.. he gave her a big hug and helped her call her dad. She cried on the phone as well and could barely talk to him. She was just shaking.. awww.. I wanted to hug her too.

I was so excited and so sad for her as well. Hope she got the support she needed from her dad and her family and her friends later on!

But, besides that.. all together it was a crazy and touching 2 hr show!!

Did anyone else happen to notice the girl with the EXTREME low rise jeans? I recall her name was fairly unusual, and I was surprised that they liked her as much as they did...but what cracked me up was that Ryan kept looking down when he was standing behind her outside the audition room. No, fairly sure she wasn't wearing underwear Ryan...

The girl who lost all the weight? I actually really liked her. I liked how hard she said she had worked and seemed really honest about it. I thought it was kind of funny how she didn't quite believe that they actually liked her. But yeah, those jeans couldn't get any lower. :D

I know.. it's disappointing... makes me wonder what her dad is really like in person..

He probably just wanted her to get an education first before becoming a singer, or going after her dreams. I don't know. But, a parent should be supporting their child no matter what they disapprove on. Let her be happy with what she has. She has a gift. Let her go after it..

At least she's not doing drugs and wanting to get high! She at least admitted to her dad that she wasn't in school.. hmmm.. so she wasn't 20 than? How old was she? 16? 17? Or was she in college? lol

Yeah.. its just so sad. Crazy world we live in.

But, on a happy note.. if she's 19 she has a choice to make her own decisions than. If she still lives with her parents or her dad than she can move out. She probably would be much happier without all that pressure. Or unless she has... way to go!! lol Pressure.. pressure.. pressure.. is not a healthy lifestyle. People can't live their life under pressure. LOL ah, funny.. after saying that.. now I'm thinking of that song I have by David Bowie and Queen, "Under Pressure"

Aw, such a good song!!! LOL Man, now I want to listen to it!!

I must admit I really do like watching those horrid auditions. I am convinced that some people sing really really bad on purpose just to get on tv. However, I think this season, it the bad auditions seem to be a bit overkill. Either the producers are putting extra bad ones in or there are just that many bad ones. I remember wanting just to see ONE great audition. I think these others are just trying to be the next William Hung.
I was blown away by the one heavy set guy Tues. nite whose father had a hit record that was bumped down by the Beatles. That guy gave me chills. I am definitely rooting for him. Simon told him, "I would be very surprised if you didn't make the finals". That is the one thing about AI that I love, how you don't have to be perfect in appearance to make it.

No, fairly sure she wasn't wearing underwear Ryan...Yeah, she was the girl who got up at 5 am everyday for a year to lose weight and get in shape for this year's auditions. Kudos to her for that as it seemed like she did lose a lot of weight. I wish that I had the mojo to get up at 5 am and do that...anyways...she was decent in terms of her voice (not earth-shatteringly good, but at least she was different), but she was dressed for a night at a crowded bar or fraternity party...you could see part of her butt when they showed her from, ahem, behind...

I liked the guy from Taunton, MA. LL...go MA, right? Wait...was he the same guy that dropped out last year or am I confusing two different guys? I also liked the girl that snuck to the auditions...she was a sweetheart...

Paula always seems little stoned out of her mind...she seemed really lit on something.

The yellow 50 year old was a hoot...

That is the problem about being two hours behind y'all.

I loved the guy with the curlyhaired guy who wanted to make David Hasselhoff cry...what a hoot...great voice too.

LostLaura

I also loved the curly-haired guy. He was too funny and had a good voice. I don't think being chubby will be a big problem for him. In fact, if he just trimmed his hair a little, he might be kinda cute. Hard to say for sure, though. But he had a good personality and voice, so I'm ranking him high so far.

The yellow woman and the Like a Virgin woman got so old, so fast. I can take a bad audition, but when it plays on and on, I just want to be like "Enough already!!"

BD, I also thought Paula looked lit up. Her behavior was so odd. They said she had a family engagement, but I don't buy it.

Did you guys here in the news today that she signed on for another reality show? Some channel (I don't think Fox) is going to follow her around. It's like, the Life of Paula type of thing. What she does day in and day out, with all of her public appearnaces and taping AI, etc.
Weird, huh? I can't imagine anyone finding that interesting, unless we actually see her popping pills. ;)

I think the thing with this season is that we are never seeing anyone who is sort of good. We are seeing people who have really good auditions and people with bad auditions. So when there was someone borderline, we feel like they should go to Hollywood. But the judges probably see people like her all day long, and have to make judgement calls.

Oh, yeah, the long haired women? Yikes. That was too weird.

I think the last audition stage is Tuesday and then Hollywood is Wednesday. I hope.

It has just turned into a theatre of the absurd. Any half wit who wants to be on TV can slog their way to an audition. Seeing William Hung is STILL making commercials and performing, these folks want to take their shot by being as bad as they can.

You just know the pre-judges love to see these train wrecks. How else can someone like "The Panther" make it to the end stage in front of the big judges?

In just seems in year's past we have seen more of the winners audition...now they just show a montage of them running out with their golden tickets.

I hate group night with a passion, so I was so glad that they barely included it last night. I guess the producers discovered that group night is everyone's least favorite part of the season.

OTOH, I think if Bailey hadn't forgotten her words, the judges really wanted to put her through. I suppose she could have done better without the distraction from the friends, but she'd probably have to manage that much stress and more on the show. She's pretty young, so perhaps she could come back another year.
I wanted to see more of the brother and sister pair...we really didn't get to see them again until she was on the way out. :( Impressive that she made it right to the end, when the judges were not that excited about her in the first place.

I also don't get this 'one more cut from 40 to 24' thing. If they wanted 24, why didn't they just pick 24 last night? Were they EXPECTING the Smoking Gun to dig up something on 16 of them?

They're showing the 4th (I think) season of the German version of American Idol here right now and they just announced the five guys who made it into the Top 10 shows - and two of them are brothers! Has anything similar ever happened on American Idol?

I was shocked that Bailey got bounced...she really had the "it" factor.

I LOVED the boy band who did the beat box...wow was that outside the lines...very cool.

just watching it now, had it on the dvr while i rewatched Not in Portland.

GAH! they put Antonella through instead of Marisa. whywhywhy.
evil editing on that beginning part...I thought they were showing Jordan getting cut, but instead it was the reaction to someone else getting cut with someone giving her a hug after she made it.

and much as I liked Sundance in the earlier rounds, I'd have taken Tommy after Hollywood...

alas, they didn't put the names on screen so I may be misspelling a lot of these.
for the guys:
Phil Stacy (I think the guy who missed his daughter's birth for his first audition)
Jared Cotter
Chris Richardson
Nicholas Pedro
Brandon Rogers (backup singer)
Sundance Head
Rudy Gardinas
AJ Tabaldo
Paul Kim
Chris Sly (guy that looks like Jack Osborne)
Blake Lewis (the beatboxer)
Sanjaya Malakar (guy whose sister almost made it too)

for the girls:
Antonella Barba
Hayley Scarnato
Lakisha Jones
Jordan Sparks
Stephanie Edwards
Melinda Doolittle (the backup singer)
Elena Alexander
Gina Gloxson (yay!)
Amy Krebs
Leslie Hunt
Sabrina Sloan
Nicole Tranquilla

I didn't think that the brother in the brother and sister pairing was that good. I wouldn't have put him through at all. He has an interesting look about him, but I thought that his voice was below most of the other people, including that guy Tommy that got booted in the end that was with Sundance...

Gina was the one who had made it to the Hollywood round last year, but hadn't gotten through to the finals.

Antonella was the one of the annoying best friends with long brown hair...otherwise, the people with the parentheses were the only ones I really remembered exactly who they were too! there were a few people they showed in the final clips that I swear it was the first time i had seen them.

I wouldn't worry at all about missing that show -- there were no new performances, and having had the judges cut to 40 Tuesday, only to cut 16 more one by one last night is show padding in the finest sense of the word.

I totally agree with you with one exception, I liked the beat-box(sp?) guy too. I thought that he sounded a lot like Bono from U2 and my husband thought that he sounded a little bit like Paul McCartney. But other than him and Chris, I thought that the rest of the guys were a huge disappointment! If the girls aren't a lot better, this season won't be worth watching.

I will tape it on Thursday to be sure. I love The Office with a passion! Which night, tonight or tomorrow night, is two hours long? I liked the bald guy that went last..he really sounded great after a shakey start.

That poor Indian kid...Simon hammered him and rightfully so. He was boring. Not a long of outstanding performances. I hoped Sundance Head would have done more than a low key version of a Moody Blues song...

Overall....bland and blah. No Chris Daughtry in that group for sure. Someone needs to stand up and shout soon.

To be fair and less mean, I should admit that I did like the last guy that went that missed the birth of his daughter. He, himself, was kind of boring, but he did a decend job singing last night and was probably the best performer for the night. As far as personality, I'd say Chris Sligh was the most interesting last night. Ah, that poor Indian kid - you are right, BD! I felt terrible for him. How did he get through over that guy that got dismissed when Sundance got picked up? Tommy? He was better than the Indian kid.

All of the guys were horrible! I was shocked. But in all honesty I am giving them the benefit of the doubt and saying it was nerves. I mean think about it...it's one thing to go on a show that might make you a star (example, back in Season 1 when it was new). But NOW you are going on a show that is not only going to probably make you a star, but you could be shot to Grammy or Oscar level. That's a lot of pressure if you think of the end result instead of just being in the moment and doing your best.

well, I have to say not too many to great ones this year at all. Out of the GUYS (http://www.americanidol.com/contestants/season6/) (hope im allowed to link to the site because its hard to remember their names this early in the season) but I liked:

1. Phil (the bald guy) probably the best last night i think. His start was awful but after he got going, wow, I really liked it !!!

2.Blake Lewis (Be-Bop kid) Hes definatley well rounded and talanted, cant wait to see more from him

3.Chirs Richardson and Nicholas Pedro, I like them for them and I just am holding hope that they will stick around so I can see what else they have to offer !!

pooor indian kid .... guess he wont let his sister pick the next song, assuming he stays.

GuanaGirl, I agree with all of your choices, except I really, especially like Chris Sligh. Maybe it's partly because he's from my hometown, but I think he's really smart and endearing too. In fact, he has a myspace (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=44800559) where you can hear some of the songs he has written. And no, you are not the only one who thinks Paula's clap looks funny. We talk about it all the time here. For those of you who missed the guys the other night, you did miss a rather entertaining clash between Ryan and Simon. Simon called Ryan "sweetheart" which didn't sit to well with Ryan. Also, Chris Sligh made a comment about Simon's involvement with Teletubbies that didn't sit too well with Simon. :24:

I'll be interested to see if Antonella gets the boot this week now that very questionable photos of her have surfaced on the net. They let that one chick go (was it last year or the year before?) for the nude photos (Frenchy or something like that). She should get the boot too IMO. Actually, I realized you were talking about new pictures. Last week there were pics of her that were pretty bad, but not awful. I doubt they would boot her because of those pictures, because none of them were taken for money--they just seemed to be a stupidity and/or drunkenness thing. but yeah, she was by far the worst singer among the girls, and still ticked that they cut marisa? mariah? to keep her in. She's probably just in because Simon wanted another 'hot' girl.

I had seen some mention of his being involved in music ministry, but he didn't look like a typical Bob Jones student*, so I had thought perhaps he did go to Furman while I was there. Apparently after he graduated (or left--not sure which), he was not too keen on some of Bob Jones's policies (which have been changed since then) and the appearance and dress restrictions, but stayed very involved with his church.
(*by look like, I am not intending any offensive stereotype -- Bob Jones maintains very strict policies on grooming, dress, and behavior for its students, so in Greenville, it usually wasn't hard to guess who went to Bob Jones. Chris DEFINITELY would not have had that hair as a student there!)

Okay, the guys. I liked them! I didn't see last week's debacle, and I'm kind of glad actually.

I don't like Sundance Head anymore, and his performance didn't impress me, but I think enough of the voters will vote for him because of the judges' comments.

Ok the bald military boy. I wish he had hair. heh. But he's cute. He's sweet. And his voice is nice. I don't think he'll win though. His voice isn't the best.
Also loved the beat box boy and loved the cute boy in the sweater at the end. Man, he was good. And I loved that Jason Mraz song. He sounded like Justin Timberlake doing Mraz. It was kind of cool.

poor Sanjaya. I think he really does have a nice voice, but the judges should have sent him home with his sister and asked him to come back in about two or three years. he's only 17, and he so has 'late bloomer' written all over him.

GuanaGirl, forgot to mention, but some of my friends in college had a yearly ritual wherein they'd go for lunch at the Beacon for the grease as a hangover remedy. which meant the drive from Greenville was always delightful. lol. :eek:That's correct guanagirl.. As much as I miss the earlier time, It's a smart move on their part to move out of the way rather than compete with this juggernaut.

Here's a quote from an article referencing the time change (http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/living/16641081.htm?source=rss&channel=ohio_living):
"ABC bumped it an hour later to steer clear of Fox's American Idol and CBS' Criminal Minds."

lol, thanks. The truth is I thought about going to that website, but I was lazy. heh. And also, I was like "if I can't remember them, maybe they aren't good enough..." heh.
Anyway, yeah for the boys, I like Phil, Nick, Chris R., Chris S.'s personality, Blake, just AJ's voice, Brandon's voice but he's boring, and Jared is even pretty good. I'm done with Sundance, and Sunjaya has to go.

Ok I didn't watch last night but I just went to the website and WHAAAAAAAAT???
I officially HATE the Vote for the Worst website. They are ruining the show!
Sanjaya wasn't voted off. Neither was Antonella. UGH.
Voted off girls: Leslie and Alaina. (I mean, they would have gone eventually but *this week*?? Not fair.)
Voted off guys: AJ (he has a good voice, darnit!) and Nick Pedro (NOOOO! I liked him!!!).

Grrrrr....

I totally agree with you, LL. I want to know how that website could get so powerful and have such a big influence...

OK, this show is even worse this season than I expected. Obviously the voting is NOT the best way to determine who the best singer is. It's a shame because someone really bad is going to end up winning it all. There is no way Sanjaya and Antonella(or however you spell her name) should still be there rather than that Pedro guy. I'm sorry, but this show is really starting to disgust me.

And Nick is a fellow Bostonian! (well, south shore anyway!)

Would have loved to have seen him have the chance to sing something more contemporary.

Antonella = ick.

This could be the downfall of the show...it's very annoying. I agree with that comment wholeheartedly...oh, well, what can you do? :cnfused1:  :34853_huh:

Well, I started voting toward the end of last season, because it was just making me sick to see wonderful singers get voted off unfairly. I haven't started voting this season yet, though. It's going to be a lot tougher with Lost on during the voting block. Heh...would be interesting if Lost's move killed AI due to fewer people being available to counter the skewed voting results.

May I say that Nick Pedro left with much class? I got seriously misty when he went over to the remaining guys during his performance for a last gesture of good will. To think he tried out for this show twice before, and only just made it this far. Now to get voted off unfairly just sickens me. AJ also was such a good sport, saying he thinks Sanjaya is great. Ryan specifically asked him if he thought the vote was right, and he would not say what we were all thinking. It's not Sanjaya's fault. He looked honestly shocked at the outcome. I wonder if he knows about that site. Of course, technically, they were backing Sundance Head last week, but I think a lot of their voting also went to Sanjaya because Sundance Head disappointed them with a reasonably good performance. Bah!

Sundance was great in the early rounds...what is going on with that kat??

I will change the poll when we get to the final 12..makes it easier...

vftw has been influential over the past few years (John Stevens, anyone? and they claim responsibility for getting someone into the final 12 last year who shouldn't have been there but I forget who), but i think this is the biggest influence they've ever had...and unfortunately, math-wise, it isn't hard to see why. Since everyone is else voting for the few people they want to protect, it's nearly impossible to compete with a bloc all voting to protect one person, when the general audience is splitting their votes.

I can only see two ways for AI to combat this --
1) change votes to voting to eliminate rather than voting for your favorite...which they probably won't do mid season, too confusing.
2) LIMIT the number of votes per phone number, as some other recent reality shows have done. People have autodialer banks that they use to influence the outcome and Fox doesn't care...they just get to announce that more people voted, which they know is not true. I think DWTS's method was very fair...people could cast a particular number of votes each week, which decreased with the number of contestants remaining. Therefore, say if there were six contestants left and you thought Emmitt and Mario were equally good, you could go with three votes for each. (One of the flaws of limiting to one vote per household is that there would be a 'second favorite' effect...let's say most people like contestant A over B and B over C...but C has a small but enthusiastic fanbase. probably B will go home because most would vote for A, and a few would vote for C.) to a degree, it could still be manipulated by having multiple accounts at abc.com, but not as easily as AI's unlimited phone votes. it would also probably address some of the criticisms that the reason so many Southerners win is that the phone system allows more calls through from those areas.

of course, seeing as I ultimately do like Lost better than AI, it would be rather amusing if vftw helped to contribute to a backlash against AI...but at this point I doubt it would be to Lost's benefit, as ABC hasn't given Lost much of a lead-in that people can switch to. :(

I can't believe Antonella and Sunjaya remain.... VFTW is at it again. I'm also a bit floored at the double-standards at play here with Antonella being allowed to stay... (Is it because she's easier to look at?)

Carency - true, having those mechanisms in place would help alleviate this... Also I think the judges should probably have some weight in the vote. Their vote could be considered perhaps half or a third, and let the viewers make up the rest. That way no matter who the fans vote for, even if it is the worst, the judges could help bring the vote back in line. Sad that the show is coming to this...

Yeah, that alternative would help too. IIRC, both So You Think You Can Dance and Grease: You're the One that I Want have the viewer vote determine which 2 or 3 performers are at risk, and then the judges decide which of those goes home.

Oh, I would love that. I've always kind of wished it wasn't totally up to the fans. And especially now with these problems that are coming up, I would definitely like them to switch to that method.

There needs to be a bit more checks and balances built in here...

well, the greatest likelihood of change would occur if the contestants that the judges like keep getting sent home, and they're left only with people they don't want to give a record contract to. they have made adjustments to the voting process before -- in response to the complaints about the filled-to-capacity voting lines for Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard, they allowed multiple lines for each contestant to get more calls through.

I thought Blake was okay, and Brandon, also. Both of their performances added a little different flavor. Chris Richardson didn't get on my nerves nearly as much. Phil creeped me out tonight. Just because you like a song, that doesn't mean you should sing it. The rest could go as far as I'm concerned.
