View Full Version : Change in the Jin/Sun relationship dynamics
LostNLuvinIt 10-30-2004, 04:48 PM While rewatching HOTRS, I had a thought......the relationship of Jin and Sun is going to be interesting to watch over the progression of the season. He is very old school and thinks he has to be the supporter and provide for Sun....but she is the only one who can communicate with the others and understand exactly what is going on (of course, he doesn't know that yet, but it will have to be revealed before long). I'm wondering how he is going to react when he is basically relegated to depending on Sun for information. He seems to have a short fuse anyways, and I think he is going to feel humiliated that it is her, and not himself, who interacts with the other survivors on their behalf. On the other hand, I think Sun will flourish once she is able to openly interact.....she'll be an interesting character.
My What 10-30-2004, 06:32 PM Well put. Sun will stay by Jin's side just for the translating purposes but I think she will not be as close relationship wise once Jin finally knows she can speak English.
flysail 10-31-2004, 03:21 PM Well said. I have been wondering when this post would come about. Sun will try to hide it from the others for as long as she can. Unfortunately, Michael already knows. Sun and Jin will have to sit down and really talk this over. He will be pretty upset. Get ready for some spouse abuse. Viva la Claire.
zia319 10-31-2004, 03:44 PM I agree that their relationship will be an interesting one to watch develop - it seems she's finally starting to get a spine and the will to stand up to her husband. It'll be nice to see that.
As for Sun serving as an interpreter for Jin, does anyone think that maybe he speaks, or at least understands, English himself? I mean, they were in Australia, where it is probably a little difficult to get by without knowing at least a little English, especially if you live there (did they or were they only there on business?). I think he just doesn't want to have anything to do with the others, for the most part, which is why he hasn't been interacting with them much (aside from offering/trading food and water), and his pretending not to understand/speak English is a good way to avoid the others. Any thoughts?

Yeay, finally a person thinking outside the box with me specifically on this topic of Jin. check out Jin's board or click on this site to go directly there to discuss over on Jin's section about this topic.

I strongly believe Jin knows English and can speak it.
kajalie 11-03-2004, 10:51 AM So both Jin and Sun know English and both of them have kept it secret from each other? Interesting.

Speaker 11-03-2004, 11:01 AM only sun knows english...jin's knowlege is completely speculation..........
It's interesting but ...i don't think so.
zia319 11-03-2004, 11:47 AM I think they both speak English, and Sun knows it, but Jin doesn't know Sun speaks it, too. If you remember the pilot episode when Michael comes asking if they've seen Walt, it seemed to me as if Sun turned to Jin to sort of ask him "what's he saying? I don't understand..." as if she was asking for a translation from him, and Jin made the decision to pretend they didn't understand. But that interpretation of the scene could have just been me...
My What 11-03-2004, 05:31 PM What a great observation Zia319. I turned my TiVo on as soon as I read this and watched this scene again and you are %100 right. Now like you said, this interpretation may be wrong. Sun could have been looking to Jin to say "What the F***, does this guy think we speak English?". I do not think so but maybe. I still think Jin and Sun know English, well the audience knows for sure Sun speaks some, and the two know each other speak English. Why were the two hiding this fact, because Jin is simple minded and thinks he needs to take care of Sun by himself and or he is racist against any person but his own race and just does not want to deal with outsiders.
pikameta 11-09-2004, 03:48 AM She could have simply been looking to her husband as in "what do we do? we don't speak English."

LolaRuns 11-10-2004, 02:06 AM I am one of the "Jin secretly speaks English too" theory supporters. But you made a great point, that it would make for good intereaction if Sun had to translate for him or had to teach him English. It would indeed be a very interesting change in their relationship dynamic.
My What 11-12-2004, 05:04 AM Sun having to teach Jin English would in fact bring the relationship closer but Jin has to know English. Only my opinion and not fact but I feel as if Jin speaks English.
Goonies123 11-12-2004, 09:05 PM I have the same feeling. I think they both share that secret..the secret of both being able to speak English.
Fogey 11-17-2004, 12:17 AM I thought she turned to Jin in that instance because she had grown accustomed to his insisting on taking the lead in any "joint" decisions: Not because he spoke English.
I felt both Jin and Sun's behavor changed after their marriage. In the Sun flashback to their engagement days she seemed more self assured and Jin seemed to have more regard for her input into the relationship. I think working for her father changed Jin's outlook and their relationship. If he doesn't get jealous about imagined attention from Michael, their relationship should start improving and recover from the father induced disfunction. (Jin might be right about Michael's attention though.) In other words I think we will gradually see Jin return to a more balanced and loving person.
Tari Luinwe 11-28-2004, 01:02 PM I think Jin truly loves Sun and was just changed by all he had to do for her father. I agree that Jin will eventually get back to that loving and caring person he use to be the longer he is on the island. I think his sterness is already fading as we could see when Sun told him it was hot and thats why she was wearing less. He may have been mad, but in the end he just accepted it because he realized it was hot. So that may have been the first step toward his changing. Also Sun made a change at that moment too with starting to stand up to Jin. Hopefully they'll find the love they had for each other and start over.
K Raid 11-29-2004, 12:28 AM Wouldn't it be funny if he was learning to speak English too so he could surprise her?
I think he set up a new life for them in America (John and Susan Kwok?). The business trip is legitimate to get under Sun's father's radar.
The watches are important because if any of them don't get delivered, Sun's dad will know something's afoot. This is why Michael was attacked. Two lives versus one.
The only question is why can't he tell her? And why is he such an ***? Maybe he can't be sure if one of Daddy's spies survived as well.
It'd be funny if Michael is an associate of Sun's father and the shippers are really rooting for dad to get his wayward princess back.
abbykitty 02-17-2005, 07:24 PM i'll be interested to see if not only Sun, but Jin also reveals that he can speak English this week. :o poor guy's already been through enough torture not being able to communicate with the others.........next week it looks like they'll kill him if he doesn't start speaking up for himself. :-X
bigdawg 05-03-2005, 11:21 AM well, now there is a huge change in their relationship....there isn't 1! :'(
Fogey 05-03-2005, 06:06 PM well, now there is a huge change in their relationship....there isn't 1! :'( I suspect we will get more episodes focusing on their relationship, probably next season. I tthink the dynamics in their relationship could add a lot to teh show.
I also caught Yun Jin Kim in her stint as a guest host on 'The View' She seems just as nice in person as her character is.
bigdawg 05-04-2005, 01:58 AM yup, but they probab;y wlil also focus on claire and her baby more regarding the physic and all thatg un stuff hehe. i think Sun will start 2 have less conversations with Jin and more with the other castaways. Next episode she's supposed to be talking with Claire and cahrlie a lot That's a very gpood start. and she's already talked to michael jack and kate and sawyer
