View Full Version : Beach or Caves?

I've always been interested by the whole Beach/Caves divide in S1. Who do you think had the right idea - the Cave camp or the Beach camp? I think the divide was interesting because it showed (initially) which characters were desperate to get off the island and which characters were comfortable about staying. This is how the two camps were split =

Caves - Jack, Locke, Hurley, Charlie, Sun, Jin and Ethan

Beach - Kate, Sayid, Sawyer, Michael, Walt, Boone and Shannon

Claire was originally part of the beach camp until Charlie persuded her to move to the caves. Michael and Walt also moved from the beach to the caves. In the later part of S1 it gets hazy where everyone is living and then in S2 the caves are abandoned altogether.

I chose the caves to live in just because it's cozier. Doesn't mean I wouldn't spend my days down at the beach though

I think I would have stayed at the beach. Beach front property for free!:happy_bounce:

Though the water would have been an issue. I probably would have gove to the caves everyday to get water anyway, or set up a catchment system like they ended up doing later.

The ocean is relaxing and comforting to me, so that's probably why I would have stayed there.

The caves do seem like a much cosier place to live...you might have to put up with Ethan attacking you in the night though.

I chose the beach, didn't like the caves at all really. Even though I liked some of the company that was there!

The caves would be more secure, but possibly a little dark and claustrophobic, so I'd have to choose the beach - lots of space, sunlight, fresh sea breeze.

Yup, beach for me!
I think the caves would've been so dark & claustrophobic aaand, I like the beach!
The ocean is really relaxing so it would help me get to sleep after all those days of kidnappings and monsters in the jungle.

Also the scenery is much nicer there...in all senses of the word :naughty:

I think there was a better sense of community at the caves...or a "commie share-fest" as Sawyer would say. The caves felt more homey. I miss them as a setting.

I think I would have stayed at the beach instead of going to the caves, dunno why but beach always seemed safer to me.

I think I would have gone to the caves - like Cap said it seemed more homey and a better sense of community, and it could be secured easier than the beach. Plus there was flowing fresh water -- even a shower rigged up by Michael, remember?

Oh I would have been on the beach with Sawyer!!
Yep! He probably would have had a big impact on my choice. ;)

Of course I am also notoriously slow to embace change, so I doubt that I would have been willing to leave the beach so soon after the crash. I would have been sitting by the beach bonfire (hopefully next to Sawyer) waiting for rescue. The caves were the graves of "Adam and Eve". I, personally, don't sleep really well in grave yards. And lets not forget that "the thing that was knocking down all of the trees" more than likely would be a cave dwelling creature. :eek2: So it would have to be the beach for me!

I'd live a the caves. Water, a doctor, and cozyness.

But, I would spend everyday at teh beach.

Yeah, but at the beach you've a big chance of spotting passing boats containing drunken Scotsmen. That would sell it to me I think.

It is strange how all the Lostees live on the beach now. It really is like beach-front property because they have set up in a long line all down the beach lol, I was noticing during The Long Con. I think Sawyer and Charlie's was at the end of the line.

All I know is I'd want Sayid to build my place  That thing was sweet!

I'm interested to know who is living next door to who on the beach!

I think Hurley is definitely neighbours with Sun & Jin, because of that little thumbs up he gives them one morning. I can picture Sawyers tent and Claires tent but I'm not sure who they are next to. Also - where are Sayid's love nest and Eko's church in relation to the little terrace of shelters along the beach? And wheres the big kitchen table thingy that Sayid and Charlie built??

We could do with a map of the beach camp.

Well the kitchen is near, or just behind Claire's tent. And Hurley lives behind Sayid. but those are the only one's I'm sure of. I have no idea where Jack's and Kate's tents are in relation to everyone else's.

I'd be at the beach. Nothing beats the ocean for me. I'd need my sunscreen though, very fair skinned.

I would sleep and bathe at the caves and 'commute' to the beach during the day
. It's too bad that soundstage was haunted, I would have loved to see more scenes in the caves.

Looks like a win for the beach camp then...

To be fair after all Jacks boasting about how safe and wonderful the caves were, the cave campers had that huge rock slide followed by Ethan attacking people in the night. Some heavy drawbacks to "the rape caves" as Shannon referred to them.

I said Caves, but that was just to sleep in, but now that I have thought about it the sand would be easier to sleep on but the caves would provide protection. And its not as if you would only stay in one place because you need to eat something and you wont find that in the Caves or on the Beach you need to go out and search for it.

The beach is overated, it rains so often on the island that the cave provides better protection from the elements also it's not exactly safe on the beach either, Scott died on there and the diver girl disappear,
if you are could to live in danger might as well do it living next to a Doctor and fresh water!

The reasons Jack gave for moving to the caves made perfect sense (fresh water, defensible). It was never really explained on the show why the Lostaways gave up the caves and all drifted back to the beach--even Jack.

It amazes me how lackadaisical the Lostaways are about defense, given all they've been through.

You might now this already, but the soundstage they used to film th caves was haunted and it basically freaked out some of the cast and crew, so they eventually abandoned shooting scenes in the caves

Is that really why they quit the caves? I thought it was just because that wasn't where the storyline was anymore once the hatch was introduced.

Apparently this played a part in it. They use to do rituals before shooting to ward off the spirits as well.

That's what I would have done. Best of both worlds that way.

Tough question. I took the caves. I'd set up my "home" in the valley, it's just cozier and better there. Shade, running water, showers... yeah, that'd be a good place for a home. I love beaches too, so I'd probably spend a lot of time at the beach too.

Hey! Almost a 50/50 split now.

Kind of like it was on the island. It seemed like the camp was split neatly in half at the end of 'House of the Rising Sun'. It is one of my favourite music montages (to "Are you sure?") where they show the divide between Jacks cave camp and Kates beach camp.

I voted for the caves because I would hate being in the sand all the time, and they're a better shelter. Plus Shannon said there were sand fleas on the beach.

Yup, but Shannon also said she was so not moving to the "Rape Caves".

Sigh...I loved Shannon.

I would probably split my time depending on the weather. In the heat I would want to be right at the ocean, in pouring rain, I would like to have a "roof" over my head

Kitten.

Voted for the caves. More secure, cozy, running water, a doctor close at hand,
Hurley  , some protection from the elements, no sand fleas. I live on the ocean and those sand fleas are a pain in the butt.

Maybe I would build a rustic little sand hut for those days when I just want to sleep listening to the waves under the stars. Sleeping on the beach is something everyone should do at least once in their life.

Still caves for my main residence.
