View Full Version : Brainwashing Video: Were you enthralled?

In the sticky-ed Brainwashing thread, it has been discussed that the video may be gender-specific, targetted only at the male side of the species. Someone thought it would be interesting to do a poll on how many folks seemed somewhat entranced by the music and video and to see which gender they were.

Here's the poll ;)

Personally, I kinda got into it. I wasn't in a trance or anything similar, but the images and the sounds in the room really had me hooked to see and hear more.

I am female and I wasn't enthralled with the video itself. I was more into wondering what it was for and what it meant, and thinking that "those Others are really messed up". The part about Jacob did pique my attention quite a bit though.

I'm female, and the only reason the video was facinating - to me - was the different pictures: I wanted to tell what they all were so my theory-mad brain could have a heyday. :D

What did get me, though, was the music. Especially the firework/crowd sounds - and the fact that one of the sounds was almost exactly like Smokey's clicking/the resetting of the Swan's timer. o_0

Entranced is probably too strong a word, but I thought it was wicked cool. Maybe the single coolest thing on this show since the Orientation video.

Yes, I didn't even notice Kate was yelling for help until she like pulled Sawyer away.

And I am male, btw.

I'm female and I wasn't exactly enthralled by the video but i did find it really cool & interesting, and (since I was watching it online 'cos it hadn't been aired in the UK) I found myself pausing on basically every frame while my mind went into theory overdrive, but I wasn't exactly entranced/enthralled by it.

Um, if by "enthralled" you mean "terrified out of my frickin' mind," then yes, I was enthralled. God, that video gave me nightmares for the next four nights. The "only fools are enslaved by time and space" business did NOT help.

Me too. I know exactly what you were talking about. Entranced might be too strong, more like "captivated" or "enthralled," like in the title. My brain was kind of, "Whoa. wtf? The Others are some messed up people."

Well if this brainwash video was suppose to have a better effect on males, than I think we got our proof.

I wasn't affected at all. I'm female but perhaps the fact that Sawyer is so good looking and that I was staring at him made my results kind of off!!! I don't know! I was looking at the video but I was more struck with the fact that Sawyer was so enthralled by it.

Lets see, isolated from the rest of the community, sleep deprived and subjected to bright flashing lights/pictures & loud noise/messages while confined. Their brainwashing technique could do double duty as torture. I can see why Carl looked stunned.

As a male I was not enthralled or entranced or captivated by it. But then I was also seeing it from an outside perspective not as the subject of its focus.

Yeah...I mentioned this in another thread and it really intrigues me. I'm pretty certain its the timer sound which begs the question: why have they synchronised it with the change in visuals?. The sound must have been sampled and then cut up and carefully placed over the top of the video (the hardcore music isn't synchronised and seems designed only to help max out the senses....different music could have been used originally).

Somebody must have recorded the timer noise for a purpose. Perhaps the Dharma stooges were shown the video before going off to the stations and the sound of the timer noise was used to help install a sense of danger when the real thing is heard.

Looks like the poll proved true! I'd like to know what it was exactly that captured the male brain, different than it would the female brain. Personally I'm female and wasn't that into it.

I can't read too much into this. I wasn't captivated--but then, I was spoiled that there was gonna BE a brainwashing room before the eppy aired. Also, I was "enthralled" with the action in that eppy, and didn't wish to be distracted from that. And the camera kept switching from character to character, as well as on the image screen--doubtless to AVOID getting susceptible viewers "entranced." (As well as to not get them too focused on finding clues! :D)

Amazing that in this MTV age, something like this can still draw people in. But I guess that's why this kind of technique is so successful in conditioning people, yeah?

I thought that the video was loud, color and sound, and there-for I didn't give it much attention. I was more interested by the glassed he was wearing, and I'm a female.

Even knowing how the video affected me, I'm still a bit surprised with the results. Of course, it's a very, very small sample-size, but I think you can say that at least nearly all females were in no way enthralled/absorbed by the video. It's odd little things like this that you don't expect to find in an episode, and when you do it certainly gets the brain goin' ;)

-edit- distress signal: who is that in your avatar? i'm sure i'll feel quite dumb when you tell me, haha. very nice picture.

Strangely enough, these are my exact sentiments. I want to know what the video meant through his eyes.

The music got on my nerves after rewinding the scene about 100 times.

That's true we should let the totals increase a bit, but even if it's a 50/50 split among the males that a big difference from the women. The other thing I learned from this poll is that there are actually 18 men on the 'lage, I thought it was 95% women here

I'm male. I voted enthralled. But I wasn't really enthralled by the video itself.

The first thing I thought was, "Clues! Clues! Watch the video for clues! Listen for hidden messages!" I love the easter eggs and little clues Lost has. The plot wasn't too intersting because they had already broken in and were going to rescue Karl. So I went completely "Sawyer" and concentrated on the video to gather what information it could tell me.

It didn't hold my attention in an "enthralling" way, and I'm female. But it sure did get my attention. I immediately was rewinding and doing frame-by-frames because it was evident that there would be layer upon layer of meaning in that film. Another great puzzle for us fans to piece together....

This is a very interesting thread, LightMeDark. I'm glad you started it. I subscribed --because I'm very interested in seeing how it turns out.

My vote:
I'm female and voted no. The video held no special attention from me --other than looking for clues.

Personally I'm female and wasn't that into it.I'm guessing it has less to do with the vidoe than it does with the situation. Ummm...it's hard to say. To boil it down bluntly: Women probably care more about the emotions of a person: how is Karl doing? Men probably care more about the hard cold facts: what is this video doing?

I don't think I explained that right, and it is certainly an oversimplification. The point is that I don't think the video was biased toward any gender. Any gender bias is probably not related to the content of the video but rather to the situatin of whether to concentrate on the rescue of Karl or concentrate on the content of the video for information. There may be a gender bias for prefernec for concern of well-being of a person compared to knowledge.

Is that confusing?

No, I get what you mean. I guess I was a little more concerned about Carl, but I don't remember how I reacted well anymore. I think it has more to do with not being as impressed with the video itself as I could have.... or something........ who knows.

If the gender specific issue is the case with the video in room 23, then it is inconsistant with recent studies related to gender and image preferences.

Long story short: Male babies prefer objects/images of shapes and colors. Female babies prefer faces. Preference is defined by the amount of time a particular image/object keeps an infant's attention. This study is further elaborated on with variances in estrogen and testosterone levels in both men and women. Example: ladies with high-norms of testosterone are more likely to be risk takers and have math related jobs than their high estrogen counterparts. Likewise the males who have slightly higher normal estrogen levels will coo longer with babies than others. This is/was a real study.

I'm female, and all I could think of was Clockwork Orange. I was watching with my daughter, who has not yet read the book, so I couldn't yell ; "It's Clockwork Orange.! "

Because of the connection, I was totally focused on the glasses, the way the chair was situated and the name "Alex".

I loved it! I love that book and I love Lost, perfect and unexpected.

Reminded me of Jungle or similar drum'n'base music.^^

Not sure if anyone's brought this up or not, but when you watch the scene played in reverse and listen to the time/space message, you only hear it while Karl is wearing the glasses. Thought that was interesting.

The video itself was not extraordianry. What the purpose of the video was -- the correlations to ACO and the Manchurian Candidate were what intrigued me the most. None of the clips withing the film actually disturbed me in anyway. Yet I did watch it in slow motion to try to garner hidden clues.

Not mezmerized.

I was enthralled, I was staring at the video just like Sawyer. And it also scared me to death too.

Now, the only reason i kept watching (and i did right, episode 8 was just awesome) the show is because of that video ... I'm a male, and i felt very interested by the video (didn't care at all about all the rest of the on-island drama, and slightly pissed of when Kate woke up sawyer, i would have wanted to see more of it)...

The sequence sawyer is hooked on (THINK ABOUT YOUR LIFE), was very disturbing for me... I couldn't really say why, but it affected me when i saw it...

Part of my reaction is due to the music used, i've always been an electronic music fan, so it certainly had an effect.

I think that the "darma Inituitive" has to do with the theory made by Charles Darwin. This relates to the movie that they were playing with the techno because the Darwin theory states that "Things Change" this was one of the phrases that flashed up.
