View Full Version : The Blue Book
TabbyRasa 02-18-2007, 10:54 AM After the hatch implosion, Desmond picked up a book. It looked like a blue hardcover book, with a darker blue spine.
Does anyone remember seeing this book in the Swan hatch, and/or know what it is?
If anyone has a screencap, please post a link.:)
ETA Updating with screencaps (make your own kind of decision;)):
Here's a couple shots of the book (http://aycu05.webshots.com/image/11764/2006164096972872973_rs.jpg) (FBYE, thanks gumpy5!)

*Michelle* 02-18-2007, 11:53 AM I thought it was his copy of Our Mutual Friend.
Lea_Lost 02-18-2007, 12:00 PM I thought it was his copy of Our Mutual Friend.
No, thankfully that one wasn't blue
It looked like a notebook, an agenda of some kind... I never saw it before in the hatch.

It doesn't look like it has a title, though...
Alkhara 02-19-2007, 04:02 AM Could have been OMF without the dust-jacket?! :eek2:
redmaria 02-19-2007, 10:04 AM it was the book he always carried with him.''our mutual friend''

Jax88 02-19-2007, 10:44 AM But the OMF copy shown was a Penguin Classic -- aren't those soft cover books by definition?

in the screencap provided by NotAllThoseWhoWander you cansee that this particular penguin classic edition HAS a dust jacket.its evidently that book, cos he used to stash his pen pic in it.it can only be it
island hottie 02-19-2007, 02:25 PM It's simply the book without the dust jacket, which was blown off or damaged in the explosion.
Jax88 02-19-2007, 02:38 PM Dusk jackets aside, the blue book that's shown is clearly a hard-cover book. Penguin Classics are soft-cover books, even the deluxe editions with dust jackets.
Therefore, the blue book that's shown cannot be the Penguin Classic OMF we were shown earlier in the series.
redmaria 02-19-2007, 02:39 PM check the link given on this thread.the screencap will answer for you.
Jax88 02-19-2007, 02:51 PM redmaria, i'm not sure if your post was meant for me, but if so, I did check the link. Looks like a paperback edition to me.
redmaria 02-19-2007, 03:16 PM Yes ,sorry i forgot to ''quote'':)
i dont think its another book.desmond always kept his treasured pic in his treasured book.i really find them to be the exact same though.just no dust jacket.
i dont know...maybe someone else could help more:confused:
Lea_Lost 02-19-2007, 05:33 PM I went back to LTDA to see that book, and it was hard-cover, Penguine as it may be.
But I found a blue book among the ones he threw away when he went frantic.
Here's a cap. (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o196/Lea_Lost/Lost%20Caps/Lost-2x24-LiveTogetherDieAlone2.jpg)
It's right at the bottom of the page.
HoardingHurley81 02-19-2007, 05:44 PM Maybe he's trying to buy a car....just a thought?

It's not OMF then?
Thank goodness for that! *phew*

Maybe a ...
DHARMAwagon van ?
;)
SAVE_WALT 02-19-2007, 07:01 PM It's simply the book without the dust jacket, which was blown off or damaged in the explosion.
Just like Desmonds clothes...
As for the ongoing argument, it looks close enough to be the same book for me to think it is. Don't care about whether it should have been a hardback or not, in the picture where can you that it is OMF the ends clearly look they are that of a hard back covered with the jacket. I like the thought that his book had its covering blown off just as he did !!
TabbyRasa 02-20-2007, 11:58 AM The first post has been updated with the screencap links that were posted by others...

I like that thought, too!
S_awyer_22_pr 02-20-2007, 12:03 PM Could it be Valenzzetis book?!!?!!??!
redmaria 02-20-2007, 12:43 PM i still think its OMF
TabbyRasa 02-20-2007, 01:38 PM My current interpretation;) is that the blue book is "Our Mutual Friend", perhaps literally (in the story), and at least, metaphorically.
Desmond said it was to be the last book he would read, before he dies. He took it out when he was contemplating killing himself, in the Swan hatch, and that's how he found Penny's letter. Her letter indicates that she knew about how he felt about this book.
As SAVE WALT pointed out, the blue book has no dust cover, which parallels Desmond losing his clothes (regardless of whether that indicates time travel).
Both the book and Desmond have been physically affected, yet survived. I believe that Des had a near-death experience (NDE). So potentially, both are transformed. I would say "forever", but there is that Time thing on LOST. ;)
It would be interesting IF we found out that the book's pages are now blank, which could be another repetition of the "tabula rasa...blank slate...new start" theme. And it would be a great twist, because then we couldn't "prove" that it is OMF.
Now...if someone finds Penny's letter inside it...that would be cool.;) Or even better, the ring is found inside.
