View Full Version : Yunjin Kim as Kate!?
abbykitty 02-23-2005, 08:44 PM just read this at TV Tome :o:
Yunjin Kim initially read for the role of Kate. She wasn't right for the role, but the producers liked her so much that they created the Korean couple for her.
would've been cool if she got the part........though I don't think I could picture anybody other than Evie as Kate. what do you think? :)
Sabretooth 02-23-2005, 11:59 PM I can't see Yunjin as Kate at all,I'm so glad they didn't go that route,to be honest. It all worked out for the best. It's kinda pathetic to note that here in 2005,Yunjin and Daniel are the only Asian regular cast members of a network show.
CapnHuFlungDu 02-25-2005, 11:41 AM It's always hard to see someone else being somebody else when you have already seen them as that person. Anybody get that? :-\

I haven't seen Shiri, but from what I reat I gathered that Yunjin played an assassin/villain there (and the girlfriend of the hero (Two roles for the price of one actress, now that is a brilliant production move.) Considering that Yunjin played that role so convincingly that Shiri broke all Korean box office records, it's possible that she could have pulled Kate - criminal with a heart of gold - off in a heartbeat. I certainly think that she can do better and more diverse stuff than the Korean housewife she plays on Lost.
Come, JJ, give her some action. I know that she can do some cool karate moves.
abbykitty 03-02-2005, 05:15 PM yeah I hope they give Sun more stuff to do.....especially now that she can actually talk to the other castaways. she's an amazing actress plus she's got the abs and everything to do all the action stuff! 8)

isn't there a guy on Law and Order that's asian? and the girl who did the voice of Mulan on ER? and let's not forget Bobby Lee (who played Sun ;D) on MadTV. but I agree asians need to start representin! :lol2: it's great to see that Yunjin and Daniel are equally as talented as anybody else on the cast......they totally rocked last episode. ;)
bigdawg 05-03-2005, 02:45 PM someone played Sun on mad TV i gotta c that..Did anyone tape it or tape just that clip. If u did post it please. That's so cool lol
Fogey 05-03-2005, 06:24 PM [It's kinda pathetic to note that here in 2005,Yunjin and Daniel are the only Asian regular cast members of a network show. Umm Which networks? Would Grace Park on Battlestar Galactica count? Would Linda Park on Enterprise count? Would Kristen Kreuk (half Chinese) on Smallville count? What about Keiko Agena on Gilmore Girls? What about Sandra Oh on Grey's Anatomy?
I think Yung Jin Kim could have carried off the role of Kate. She is a quality actress. However the upside of her not getting that part, but having the show rewritten to include her, is that it resulted in adding both Evangeline Lily and Daniel Dae Kim to the cast as well as Yung Jin.
bigdawg 05-04-2005, 01:55 AM yup ur write, but i still don't think yunjin could have carried out kate as well as evie
Fogey 05-04-2005, 06:59 PM yup ur write, but i still don't think yunjin could have carried out kate as well as evie Yeah I agree somewhat, however if Yun Jin had been cast as Kate, they probably would have written the part to suit her. It would have been a different character as far as behavior goes. This thread reminds me of some of the ones on another site where we compared Alyson Hannigan to Biff Regan, the actress who played Willow in the unaired Buffy pilot, or looked at how the part of Cordy would have changed if the part had gone to Bianca Lawson, who tried out for it, instead of to Charisma Carpenter.* Some actors bring their own identity into a role and the character becomes identified with them & no one else. Unlike say Bond where we have had multiple 007's.*
bigdawg 05-05-2005, 12:58 AM ya, ur totally right! The writeers wrote the script to suit evie well. so maybe she could've pulled kate off. But i think they were looking for an american to play kate not a korean

Evangeline Lilly is Canadian
Yoon-jin Kim Although born in Korea, was raised mostly in New York City.* :lol2:
bigdawg 05-05-2005, 02:59 AM you're right, but i was referring to her physical features. She looks korean not american. They're both doing fine jobs as kate and Sun so ther aint no problemo ;D
LostOne 05-05-2005, 10:22 PM you're right, but i was referring to her physical features. She looks korean not american. They're both doing fine jobs as kate and Sun so ther aint no problemo ;D
I don't mean to get on your case, but....
Uhmmm..What exactly does an American supposed to look like according to you then? ::)
So by your reasoning, Michael, Walt, and Hurley also don't look American?
Why is it still so strange for many people in this day and age to think of Asian-Americans as Americans?
This ( Hopefully ) isn't the 1950's where everyone on American TV and in the movies were white ( ala "Friends" ).
Thankfully, LOST has somewhat ethnically diverse cast, which hopefully is a sign of things to come in the next few years.
BTW I would have LOVED for Yujin to have played the role of Kate, it would be totally casting against type,( something that was done when they cast Mos Def in the role of "Ford Prefect" for the New "Hitchhiker" movie ) instead of the role that she plays now.
But I guess the producers felt that it would have probably strained credulity with the target audience of the show...... :(
Fogey 05-05-2005, 11:52 PM What exactly does an American supposed to look like according to you then?I say the original American look is very muchl like an indian in appearance* ;)* There are neighborhoods in the western US where Yoon-jin Kim would blend in a lot better than Evangeline. I don't think bigdawg was trying to be non-PC, just saying the writers had a certain look in mind, more caucasian than asian.* Personally I don't see why it should matter to either the writers or the audience. But then I think Sun is cuter than Kate however both are great looking and good actresses.*
The cast of Lost has a mix that very much resembles the office mix for my former job (Yes in the US), except that 90% of the Lost cast could probably get work as models.
bigdawg 05-06-2005, 01:27 AM ooo. i was just trying to say that i think evie would be more suitable for the part of Kate. When the producers created the character they were picturing someone like Evie to play the role. That's what i meant. sorry 4 confusion
Fogey 05-06-2005, 02:23 AM Bigdawg, that is the way I interpreted your remarks. The writers/producers had a mental image for the character that Evie fit better than Yoon-jin. Hope I did not accidently imply bias on your part :-[
bigdawg 05-06-2005, 03:39 AM it's all good
quangtran 05-08-2005, 08:06 AM I certainly think that she can do better and more diverse stuff than the Korean housewife she plays on Lost.

Disagree completely. Yunjin's performance in Lost is infinitely more compelling than anything in Shiri. The character of Sun has more soul than the rather non-district femme fatal Hyun. Even with the frantic gunfights, explosions, political intrigue, and other action-film cliches, all Shiri did was prove that the Koreans can make films as loud and vacuous as the Americans.

bigdawg 05-08-2005, 04:29 PM I never saw that movie so i can't argue or say anything about it....but I am sure that whichever project Yunjiin works on will turn out gr8. Anyway, do any of you think that Yunjin can pull off Shannon? that is completely a differnt type of character then anything she has done. I also don't think that any of the other characters can pull off Sun as well as Yunjin. She is awesome
mandoosue 05-10-2005, 01:45 AM i saw shiri, and eventhough yunjin gave a valiant effort for her part, the movie itself was action oriented and didn't focus too much on her character. i am happy that yunjin got the role of sun, since out of all the female characters, sun seems to be the most practical, resourceful, and grounded.
bigdawg 05-10-2005, 11:48 AM yup, i agree with you on that one. btw, is shiri a worthwhile movie 2 see. What's it about and where can i find it?
mandoosue 05-11-2005, 06:35 AM i actually saw shiri at blockbusters, so you can rent it and see if you like it, before you make a purchase. the story is about north korean spies who come to south korea to assassinate an important political figure, and south korean police detective who tries to stop them. yun jin plays the girlfriend of the south korean detective, and i'll leave it at that . i don't want to give away too much for those who haven't seen the movie. ;)
bigdawg 05-11-2005, 08:05 AM cool ;D
it sounds like a great movie
AudsDream 05-13-2005, 04:24 AM I say the original American look is very muchl like an indian in appearance ;)
Off-topic, but as a Native American (Indian), whose race isn't represented at all on the networks, I gotta say thanks to Fogey for the mention.
:)
bigdawg 05-13-2005, 04:35 AM cool. ;D
bigdawg 06-08-2005, 01:46 AM would any of you guys rather preferred yunjin is Kate than as Sun?!! heck, not me. I'm so glad they decided to create that character. Plus, they also decided to give her a hubby, so lucky for ddk that Yunjin auditioned at all!!! lolol ;) :lol2:
krazy1 06-08-2005, 03:13 AM Nope! I really love Yunjin as Sun. She is the radiant one of the bunch! :)
bigdawg 06-08-2005, 03:38 AM lol, she's radiant and pours out her SUNlight for others to share!! what a good person lol!!!

Even though Kate is a far bigger role, I'd much rather prefer Yunjin the role of Sun. Kate criminal background, while initially interesting, turned out to be one of the weaker backstories.
krazy1 06-08-2005, 04:26 PM But when Jin had his, it really did tie it all together quite nicely. Si=un's made even more sense after Jin's.
CaraLUVsLOST 06-11-2005, 11:12 PM I can't really picture Sun being Kate.. but I am very glad the writers decided to make the Korean couple because I think Yunjin is a very good actress! ;D
krazy1 06-12-2005, 02:50 AM Jin and Sun are by far the best couple on Lost. 8)
bigdawg 06-12-2005, 05:58 AM yup!!! i also like the charlie claire thing that's goin' on but i'm sure the phsycic doesn't ;)
btw, do we know how long Sun and Jin have been a couple for or at least married for??
Fogey 06-12-2005, 07:44 PM Jin and Sun are by far the best couple on Lost. 8)
Yup!! ;D
Of the 3 apparent couples I would currently put the order as:
1. Sun - Jin
2. Claire - Charlie
3. Shannon - Sayid
Although I expect all three to frequently run into real relationship problems.
bigdawg 06-14-2005, 05:55 PM Of the 3 apparent couples I would currently put the order as:
1. Sun - Jin
2. Claire - Charlie
3. Shannon - Sayid
i would put
1. SUN-JIN (of course lol)
2. Sawyer-kate lol
3. Jack kate lol
4. charlie claire
5. hurley danielle lol
6. and then Shayid ( u get the point though) ;)
Fogey 06-15-2005, 02:20 AM ( u get the point though) Yeah you don't like Ana - Jack as a couple? :lol2:
bigdawg 06-15-2005, 03:12 AM actually i do!! i guarantee u that ana and jack are gonna hook up before jack and kate!!!!! and it's gonna happen this new season!!! kate is gonna get so jealous so she's gonna seduce sawyer lol.
and Sun and jin will have their romantic reunion. and they said that jin is alive so that's good!
