View Full Version : Ben's eyes
TabbyRasa 02-21-2007, 10:50 PM Ben's eyes were like Mike's eyes in Further Instructions...one VERY dark, the other pale...Ben's right eye was black, his left was amber/pale brown. IIRC, Mike's right eye was also the black one.
Just an observation...I don't know what it means, but it's probably not good.:eek2: ;)

No one else seems interested in the Ben eye thing...hmmm. I'll come back and update with the links to the screencap of Mike's eyes, and the post from Gregg Nations where he acknowledges the unusual eye colors used on LOST.
At the moment, I think it might mean that Ben and Mike are alien, or being used /possessed by some nefarious force or being, or it just foreshadows general dark intentions.

This scene is at about 40:00 into SIASL, including commercials, and it goes on for about 1-2 minutes.
Juniebun 02-22-2007, 04:25 PM TR: I meant to write down when I saw it, but in one of the scenes from last night, I noticed that Jack's eyes looked really light...like a light blue. I couldn't believe that they looked so different from his usually hazel/brown eyes, well, I ended up forgetting what scene it was. I know that it could be lighting issues if his eyes look really dark brown, which I've seen and thought it was something weird. This light blueish color was weirder than that...damn! I wish that I could remember. I have seen Jack and Ben's eyes look dramatically different in a lot of the episodes...
erin1679 02-22-2007, 04:52 PM I never noticed a difference in eye color (maybe I was looking around for too many Easter Eggs). It will be interesting to see the link.
TabbyRasa 02-22-2007, 04:53 PM Junie, I didn't notice Jack's eyes being different...I'll have to look next time.
But as I posted on the other thread, there are have been numerous occasions of characters' eye color changing, even within the same scene, and sometimes the eyes don't match.
The particular instance of Ben's eye color that I'm noting here, though, is when Jack is tending Ben, after Alex brings him to Ben (not the scene on the beach). It's particularly notable because one eye is black, and the other amber, and it's not due to shadows.
That's the other thing I've noticed is many scenes where a character's face is half in shadows...but that's different than what I'm describing, in this case.

Screencap for Ben's eyes not available yet...but here is the very similar effect that I noticed in Mike's eyes (http://gallery.lost-media.com/albums/ep-caps/season3/3x03-instructions/2/normal_instructions-cap-453.jpg) in Further Instructions. And here's the thread (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=61685) about them.
annieone 02-22-2007, 05:00 PM I only noticed that they did not point at the same direction, I mean, the lower eye,the right one, was totally pointing to his nose and the other ne was more straight out.
flyingv 02-22-2007, 05:35 PM I could see what looked like a reflection of the blind in the hatch in Ben's left eye; a bit like the one in last week's epi when Des was on the floor covered in paint. I didn't notice the difference in eye colour though, I'll have to look for that when I re-watch the ep.
TabbyRasa 02-23-2007, 12:12 PM lost-media.com put the rest of the epi's screencaps up:

There are several more of Ben's eyes, as well.
aurorawest 02-23-2007, 12:19 PM The reason that one of Ben's eyes is darker is from the shadow cast by his nose.
As for why the actors' eye colors are different from scene to scene -- color correction.

Thanks for the screen cap and link to the other thread....very interesting

I meant to also post that this scene is at about 40:00 into SIASL, including commercials, and it goes on for about 1-2 minutes. Watch it and pay close attention to Ben's eyes (obviously). I didn't really adequately describe the eerie-ness, even with his left (amber) eye, and his odd eye movements.
BillToons 02-28-2007, 12:06 AM After reading this thread earlier in the week I've re-watched the epi on HD DVR paying particular attention to the eyes. After slow-mo and frame advancing thru certain sections there is a distinct difference in color in Ben's eye colors that i really don't think has to do with shadows. Furthermore, Juliet's eyes do the same exact thing, two distiinctly different colors. One is very blue the other nearly gray or no color and very bright. This is seen during a very brief close up when she visits Jack's cage after being marked (shows Jack her mark). Her face is evenly lit at the moment and it is very obvious. Maybe this is the "History" between Juliette and Ben that Tom mentioned after the operation.
I also noted that during the episode Sawyer and Kate's eyes did not do this no matter what the lighting.
Not sure if it means a thing, but it's interesting. :)

Thanks for reading, and paying that particular attention!
Yes, the dark eye is in full lighting.
I realize that Ben is supposedly in pain, after surgery...but did you get the feeling, as he lifted his head, turned his head downward, and turned his body, as he lay on his side...that his movements and eyes were somewhat snake-like...reptilian...alien...evil?:eek2: I did. It was a very, very creepy feeling.

I didn't notice that, but I may very well have missed it.

Yep, I noticed their eyes seemed "normal".
IMHO, The Others (or at least, some of them) are alien (or sci-fi strange), and/or TPTB are using eye color changes and bizarre eye characteristics in a thematic way, and/or it's for intrique/water cooler talk.
Here's a link, in case you didn't see Gregg Nations' reply to my question about Mike's eyes (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=61690), and in my post to Gregg, there is a link to the thread about Mike's eyes.
