Well,
One may disagree with the direction that the show has gone, as I do, but you gotta admit that they still have some sense of humour and a great deal of petulance (just like when they "flipped the bird" at us) to come up with this "Going Down the Hill" story.
The parallels between the original "Jumping the Shark" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_shark) are too obvious to explain. Surprised that no one noticed it.
Now, if they only got back to explaining some of the island mysteries... :(

Oh, you're right! I can't believe I didn't think about that! Then again, I don't really use that phrase either, even though I'm vaguely familiar with it. But I can't say this means Lost has "jumped the shark." Many people probably feel that with season 2 (but I don't agree).
Edit: BTW, welcome the 'Lage!

I was thinking it was a meant to indicate that things would be speeding up soon- "it's all downhill from here"

MaggieRyanJr - I hope you're right that would be really nice.
Mortz- You're going to have to explain what you mean a little more, I don't understand the connection.

me either, sorry.
Fonzie jumping an actual shark on water skis = Hurley & crew push-starting a VW bus
:undecide: not getting the parallel....

I'm just spitballing here, but I believe the parallel between the VW and the Shark scenes were the whole are-they-going-to-make-it tension build-up which preceded the conclusions of both said scenes.
Also, the whole VW thing felt very "un-losty" and doing something that is completely uncharacteristic (not to mention incredibly cheeasy) is yet another attribute of jumping the proverbial shark.

Didn't Damon and/or Carleton say there was going to be a jumping the shark moment in this season? This could be it.
Something going down hill can also alude to things getting worse.
If this was Lost's jump the shark story, it doesn't matter to me. I liked it and thought it fit the island's mysterious powers and played into the destiny/free will themes - was it destiny that Hurley found that car and started it to prove he isn't cursed and to use for something in the future?
