*wheels in* :whlchair:

*adopts best old geezer voice* Look at all these young whippersnappers. It wasn't like this back in my day with the internet and message boards, your fancy iPods and streaming media. I was born in the 1960's when music was music, you played it on a phonograph, you listened to your pocket transistor and watched Batman on your 13" black and white TV. It was good enough for us! We loved it!

*ahem* Welcome to The Council of Elders, the group for Lost fans age 35 and over. You know who you are, so come and join. You remember eight track tapes, Donny and Marie, leg warmers, pong, Schoolhouse Rock. Maybe you watched the Monkees when it first aired, maybe you saw it when it reran on weekday afternoons when you came home from school. Either way, there's a place for us here!

So if you sometimes fret because you feel older than the combined age of every PB&J shipper on Lost Forum, you pull your hair out (or what's left of it) when someone says 'Cheech who?', then this is where you need to be.

Please state your age and then wear it proudly! :)

I've almost gotten to the point where I'm ready to just accept that this is likely something serious (made my peace with it, perhaps?) and want to move on to treating it... so if it IS nothing, that'll be a surprise, but a relief. :)

Lisa,

It sounds like you're needing a good break from things when you're done with your appointment on Monday. You really should do something nice for yourself - and don't bring anyone else along (unless you really want to). I think that whatever the results may be, you might need some pampering just for yourself to celebrate YOU.
I dunno, just an idea...

Lisa- you know my prayers and thoughts are with you that everything is fine, and that if for some reason you have to venture down an unexpected path you are granted courage, strength and grace. I think Sauk's right about the pampering- isn't that what "sick" days are for?? Thanks so much for sharing your experience about your job... That definitely didn't sound good.. I'm very glad it worked out for you..

wanders - Thanks also for your two cents..:) (lol on bought like the equipment) It's going to be an entire change of career, so no more "same grunt, different day.

Lisa, :63: are with you.

Ame, if you can't see yourself where you are now in 5 years--it's time to GO. I've gotten to that point before, and had to go, even though I had no place to go TO. I was unemployed and broke for awhile, and that was scary (to say the least). At least you have somewhere to go TO. So GO. (That advice and $1 buys a cuppa :coffee: at my fave coffee shop.)

Just wanted the Elders to know that I'm thinking of you and all your decisions and struggles. I don't have time to get caught up. The husband of a good friend had a very rare kind of stroke at much too young of an age so it wasn't immediately diagnosed correctly and between that and work and "stuff," I can only dart on to say I'm thinking of you all.

No, but since it was a standard, occasionally it made the same sound Hurley's did (when he popped the clutch to get it started). Shortly after that, I learned what was entailed in replacing said clutch!

btw I just saw a screen cap of the van. I was watching the epi on an old b/w tv. I didn't realize Hurley's vw was blue:redface:

Woo Hoo! I've finally been a member of the Lage long enough to qualify for my very own Avatar! I spent a HUGE amount of time making up my mind what it ought to be, since all this Avatar stuff is a bit new to me. Heh. Us old folks have got to keep up with these yunguns in this computer stuff, ya know... :p

But now I'm wondering how does one go about inserting text just below their Avatar picture so it shows up on the posts I write? I see that some people have done this, but danged if I can figure it out. Thanks for the help folks!

Heh, Yeah. Actually, I have a thing about Vincent. He's like the most mythical and mystical character in the entire plot, if you ask me. And I love myth! But, what I don't understand is - I thought Vinnie got on the boat with Walt and Michael. Does this mean that he mythed the boat?

Thanks for the good thoughts for my friend's husband. He had a very odd stroke that has left him with some aphasia that has the doctors a bit puzzled. He makes perfect sense, seems normal, but then, all of a sudden, puts the word "baby" in a sentence. He was talking about a basketball game, discussing the plays, the coaching, everything perfectly rationally and then said, "What was the final baby?" instead of "score". And he knows that he has said the wrong word, but can't figure out what he said or what he should have said. So the doctors are keeping him under very close observation and calling in some heavy duty specialists because they are sort of puzzled. Nothing is showing up the way it should on any tests. It's all very very odd. So keep the good thoughts coming.

I'm so sorry for the terrible weather up there, folks. Hasn't been great in the South, either, as I'm sure you've heard (twisters everywhere). The fact that Texas has been blessed with mild, sunny days and cool but not cold nights--it can only mean that our turn is coming! :42:

We've experienced the same thing after two of mr d's strokes. It's frustrating for everyone, both listener and stroke victim. We dealt with it the same way you help stutterers, by letting him speak at his own pace and not speaking "for him". If he didn't notice he had said the wrong word, and we understood what he meant, we just ignored the mistake. Both times the aphsia got better, although he still doesn't have as extensive a vocabulary as he used to. Patience and perserverence were what got us through. My thoughts are with you all.

The universe is giving us two wonderful gifts to usher us into spring...
One is tonight's total lunar eclipse (http://www.space.com/spacewatch/lunar_eclipse_news_030425.html)which starts in a bit over an hour...
The other is an earlier start to daylight savings time (http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/daylight_time.html)- it begins next Sunday..

dragonwife - I was just funnin'... You surely deserved a nice three day weekend. Sometimes that's better than the pay! You sound like a person who is full of patience and love.. You and Dragon-hubby are lucky to have each other.

Saukkomies - great photo! It kinda looks like where I live..

God's Tom - glad you're seeing spring.. Ahh, the smell of fresh-cut grass.. I had my "sign of spring" last week.. Although there's snow on the ground, I heard the birds chirping - so sweet.

It was cooler and breezy here today. But it's supposed to warm up considerably over the next 2-3 days. I have no doubt there will be at least one more cold snap, though. Yet it pretty much seems like spring is here.

I am glad for you, Tom. Some posting friends in SC said there were no twisters, but the winds were so bad, their houses rattled. It was quite the storm system, in the places where it raged thru.

In ND, my sister in law says that the highway folks put up gates at every interstate ramp in the city, cuz some IDJITS were trying to get on the CLOSED interstate, like nothing was happening! Major blizzard and wind conditions up in the Central North US.

So those of us with decent weather can count our blessings! (Sauk, that first pix was a !! Snowbeachcombers! :24:)

We even saw some deer in our back yard during the storm. I was suprised, they usually stay back in the woods when it's storming. They were beautiful.

I am soooo jealous of you southern folk!
It usually starts warming up for us by the end of March, but we frequently have at least one more snowstorm in April. That snow doesn't stay on the ground long though.
As for flowers, the hardy perenials start coming up in April also, but you can't put out the tender stuff until June. Killing frosts have been know to come on Memorial day!

Thanks for the good thoughts for my friend. He is recovering quite well, actually. Fortunately, I don't mind being in hospitals, so I spent several hours there today while his wife and family got ready for him to come home--not sure what all they have to do, but certainly some rearranging to make sure he will be safe in bathroom etc. He is finding more words and using words correctly. That was the major problem, not physical difficulties.

It's lovely here. Spring is on the way. The daffodils are budding and the croci are up and it was sunny and warm. Last week it snowed. We've had three snow falls this year and that's totally unheard of. Usually we go three years without so much as a trace.

(Sauk, that first pix was a !! Snowbeachcombers! :24:) Snowbeachcombers - that's adorable STH... Images conjure in my mind of snowpeople clad in bikinis and swimming trunk and sunglasses. (Or maybe that's just how I feel right now... BRrrrr..) Yes, keep us crazy northerners from turning into human popsicles..

BD- That's right - I forgot some states don't observe DST... I can't comprehend triple-digit heat for more than a couple of days. I say everyone should come to Maine for the summer! Nothing like sitting on the ocean rocks sunning like a seal in August..

Dragon - I remember I moved up here April 26 years ago. The next day it snowed. I almost re-packed my car and headed back where I came from!! Glad you saw your deer....... I can't wait for ours to come back.. They're such sweet creatures. But sometimes they come too close for their own good - we had one one the deck last year about 3 feet from going in the pool.. I love when the fawns arrive and start spastically jumping around the field like puppies on crack, then the parent will give a subtle nod of the head or snort and they stop.
Quiet deer scoldings :)

Perdue - glad to hear your friend's recovering, and that the flowers are in bloom.

Sorry I've missed so much time. Holy cow - we've started another thread already. Times do fly don't they. I'll be trying to check in more often.

It sound like some of us are coming up on more AFGO's (for Saukkomies - AFGO = "another f-in growth opportunity") and I'm happy you've shared your experiences.

Lisa - we are all here for you, no matter what. I hope things turn out for the best.
Perdue - My best wishes for your friend, my friend. He's lucky to have you in his corner.
Ame - I'm so glad you're going for it. I'm encouraged to hear how you and Saukkomies have managed to cope with the fears of losing security to branch out and take on new adventures. It's not easy and you're both heroic to do so.
STH - keep us apprised on the doctor's investigations into your health. The whole popsicle stick thing (i'm sorry) made me laugh. No offence but, girl, when you share, you are the most open of books!

I've missed you guys and the positive and fun sharing that goes on here.

Yeah, dany, that's me! Open book. No deep, dark secrets. I'd never be a character on a soap opera! :D

Neither my doctor nor the tests could find anything wrong with me. Thus, I just have to live with it, I guess. I have a cholesterol medicine added to my pharmacy (not enough GOOD cholesterol in me--that figures). The doc expects I have arthritis, which causes all my pain. Great. Just great. The allergies, diabetes, and blood pressure probs ain't going nowhere, of course. Guess I'm just gonna have to be a crotchety old geezer. Except for the meds, there ain't nothing else for it! :unhappy:

Ame, I hope better weather reaches you and dragonwife soon! But do be sure your bear cub is in a properly cold place--he wouldn't be happy with warm temps! ;)

And congrats on making your move to the new job! :clapping:

Nothing but the best to Lisa and Perdue's friend!

:wavey: to everyone! May we all have a good week!

Tabby, there's nothing to be ashamed of. I took this "real age" test online yesterday. I am currently 51. My "real age" turns out to be 68!! Now, THAT'S the kind of news that makes my day! :sob:

Anyway, :Welcome: to the Elders thread! We're a pretty nice group to hang around (unlike those pervs in the Basement ;)).

Justluvit: Well, prepare to be :dizzy:! In the original Galactica, Starbuck was a hotshot GUY pilot. In this new Galactica, Starbuck is (was?) a hotshot GIRL pilot. Maybe this death is a cover-up for a sex-change operation?

And, no, Dany, I haven't watched the new Galactica. I know about Starbuck from reading articles. (Going from Lorne Greene to Edward James Olmos as Adama was equally mind-boggling for me! :D) I'd heard that she (Starbuck) was preggers this season. Did she die having the baby? Anyway, my sympathy. I know how I'd feel if they killed off Desmond or James on LOST!

Lisa, is the biopsy an in-patient or outpatient procedure? How long afterwards will you know anything?

Thanks for the condolences, guys, on the loss of Starbuck. I'm still thinking she's not really dead. She's just not. So there.

Actually, if you get a chance to catch it, you really should give the new Battlestar Galactica a try. It's a fantastic show - head and tails above the original version. They have hot looking Cylons who look like models now (well, the female ones anyway). Starbuck's a girl, as is Boomer - and, wait for it, they have REAL names. Starbuck is just the "call sign" - her name is Kara Thrace and she's NOT DEAD. They tried to convince us she's dead by blowing her up REAL GOOD - but I'm not falling for that old trick. Nuh huh.

Welcome to tabby.

Lisa, is the biopsy an in-patient or outpatient procedure? How long afterwards will you know anything?
STH, it's outpatient surgery. I will be having general anesthetic but will go home that day. As for when I'll know anything, I do not know that yet; I've read that most biopsies are done immediately while a patient is still in surgery, but since they're taknig the whole node out I'm not sure if they'll do that for me. I have a sneaking suspicion that although I've endured the wait for a diagnosis this long, the next three weeks are going to be really tough for me. :( (You know, how it's harder and harder to wait the closer you get to something?)

No, it's no fun to wait. It always amazes me that they seem so worried about something, but schedule the biopsy for it WEEKS from then! Legendary Maine musician Bill Chinnock has died.... He was an accomplished guitarist, keyboardist and singer-songwriter.

Chinnock began his musical career more than 30 years ago. He was a leader of the Asbury Park, New Jersey music movement and was the founding member of what later became Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

You see "Happy Feet"? Not as good as MOTP, but a fun flick! If it hasn't shown up in video stores yet, rent it when it does!I haven't seen it yet, surely will when DVD comes out.. But I was hooked on watching the trailer of Mumbles singing "Don't - push - me - cause - I'm - close - to - the - edge.. and I'm trying not to lose my head".

I so fell in love with him that I bought the animatronic Mumbles (sings and dances).. But his little plastic eyes rolled around in two different directions, making him look like "Homicidal Sociopathic Mumbles". Not too cute. So my housekeeper commented how cute he was - gave it to her... She said she and her Kitzel (she's German - her cat) play with him for hours. Yesh, probably "server too busy".. It happens sometimes, especially the day or two after episodes... I have to say, since subscribing that hasn't happened once.

Happy Friday! The temps are going to rise- rise - rise - to a whopping 40 degrees!! Whoot Whoot! Get out the sunblock Dragon! Really, I can't wait for the snow to really start melting and for spring to break it's head through the frozen tundra...

Hearing that makes me (sorta) glad I live in the south!

Thanks for the reminder STH, but I've been chomping at the bit to change the clocks. I love when the days get longer...

Dragon, I hear ya! "Brutal" is about the only word I can think of.. And what I don't get is - the ITS Snowmobile trail runs thru the back field, and there's people out snowmobiling! At night! When it's -20 degrees! There's not enough Jaegermeister in the world to get me on a sled in those temps...

Tom - that weather sounds beautiful... We'll be there soon.. And the pool will be ready for swimming.. But it makes me think - those penguins in March of the Penguins would think the weather by dragon and me is summer! So there's always someone with it worse off... One man's ceiling is another man's floor, right?

Speaking of weather...perfect weekend in the valley...92 today with a touch of wind...it felt glorious. Hit a few spring training games the last few days. Summer is arriving early. Normal high for this time of year is 74. Hope that doesn't make for a long summer.

I long for the days when a day could go by without me walking into a room about to do/get something, and then wondering "what?"...hehe. The good ones are when I finally "snap" and remember. The rest...I chalk up to "it must not have been important".;)

Oh, belated thanks to Baileysdad for the welcome!

Oh, I hate it when that happens!

I never used to have to mark the carton of hard-boiled eggs with the date...but now I do, for 2 reasons:

I don't want to confuse them with the uncooked eggs

And I don't want to get salmonella for eating them when they're too old.

You know, Bill Cosby used to have a marvelous stage routine about just that. His theory was when you stand up your memory falls into your behind. When you give up trying to remember what you forgot, you go sit down and that pushes the memory back up into your brain. .... until you stand up again!

There is something to be said about changing seasons..I miss the coming of spring..the smell, the feel. Spring is my favorite time of the year. We have summer and fall here and that is it. seven months of 50-70 and five months of 80-110. You can drive two hours north and see the leaves change and see the snow..but I had no interest in doing that...It went from 72 to 92 in the span of a week...to fast I am told by the locals....it was HOT today...gads.

You kind of need to acknowlege there's a problem (you did! :) ) and be open to help (working on this one :ohwell:)

To do this, just take your fingers out of your ears and stop prancing around the room singing "la,la,la... I'm not listening" ... And when you figure out how to do that, please let me know.. Prancing and typing on the fuse don't mix - I keep dropping my laptop.

Ayuh, dragon - the maple's starting to run! Sure sign of spring...

STH- it's a blessing and a curse to have it so handy (makes great gift baskets for flat-lander friends)

How Seasons Run In Maine

March/April:
The maple syrup runs.
This coincides with the mud runs.

May:
The snowbirders* run back to Maine
(*snowbirders are elder-elders who leave for Florida in late fall)

June, July, August:
The rivers run - rafter's delight
The coastal towns are run amok with tourists
Everyone runs from blackflies

September
Tourists run back to their natural habitat
Mainers have the run of the state

October, November:
Leaf-peepers run around the highways in big buses
Hunters run the woods looking for a "trophy"
Snowbirders run back to Florida

December, January, February
Skiiers and snowmobilers run the trails
Cabin fever sets in for those who run out of things to do indoors.

The calendar for Phoenix:

September-March: Hike in the mountains, run, ride a bike, golf, ride with the top down, sit in the sun, leave doors and windows open, sit outside at a farmer's market and eat brunch, swim and get as much done outside as you can.

April-August: STAY INSIDE...FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!...STAY INSIDE WITH THE A/C BLASTING.

Well BD, September thru March sound glorious.. April thru August, eeeeek.. I take it you're telling us it's kind of hot... BUT IT'S A DRY HEAT!! (so's my oven, but I'm not bellying up to that)

My friends live in Arizona.. They say heat is heat, and a hundred degrees feels terrible whether it's dry or humid.. Crank up the AC/BD!

Baileysdad
03-14-2007, 12:55 AM
The problem with dry heat...there is no moisture in the air...so the heat sucks the moisture out of you if you are in the sun. I set out on a run yesterday and only got four miles in as my lips were chapped and my body cramped...I get up at 7 now to run...

Dry heat is great...just stay out of the sun...the open aired mall had their misters going full blast today...a nice haze of cold water that dried up within seconds of touching your skin because of the air...

So far so good...39 years in Michigan so this is a nice change...I will get back to y' all when it hits 110.:)

ok...I undervalued where I live

All year round you can surf (I don't go IN the water because of the fish called SHARK...being an elder you take your life seriously or at least as far as being EATEN)
Water ski (not a fan cause you can end up in the ocean and thus eaten)
Jet ski (man I love this)
Fun parks open all year round
Indy (4 day car race in October)
Mountain walks (just take H20...humid during Dec to April... but who cares about a little perspiration....it cleans the pores...like a sauna)
Beach activities..with 30+ sunscreen
Swim all year round (in the pool of course...before a barby and that cool beer)
Magic Million Horse Race and Sales

It hit the 80s here today! After the bitter cold miserable winter I just endured, I'm not about to complain about the heat...however, there are a few things I'm NOT looking forward to this summer:

BEES! I hate them! Always have! All varieties!

SPIDERS! They make their webs across every available space on our front porch, & you have to check carfully with a flashlight when coming home late at night! (If you've ever walked face 1st through one, you understand.)

FIRE ANTS! It's like having a mound of crawling piranhas every foot or so in your yard!

Other than that - I'm glad it's spring!

I'd think that September might still be a bit hot around the Phoenix area, BD. I know it is here in north Texas!

BD, the air misters sound nice - and fun! So people are sprayed just like produce in the grocery store?

Tom, I'm with you on the spiders.. Their webs are beautiful, especially when they're sprinkled with morning dew... But yes I have walked through some webs (ack)... and a few years back a recluse bit my mother's foot and it was frightening... swollen & purple for weeks... and the doctor said she was lucky..

(About bees -have you read "The Secret Life of Bees" tom? After reading that I'm kind of enamored with bees and honey now..)

luvs - Australia sounds so fun! *searching jetblue now for prices... can you imagine the two of us ripping it up together??** OK, back to reality..

SHARKS! Ack! Years ago a bunch of us went shark fishing off Long Island.. I caught one I wasn't huge, but it's an incredible amount of work - strapped in a chair, takes a looong time of constant work.. . I felt like "the woman", like the she-conquerer.....

...Until a few years later when I was in the Bahamas and came about 20 feet from one while underwater. Karma's a b*tch, and this was the shark's long-lost cousin almost giving me a coronary....

STH - You're so funny! Let the touristas drive up and down the coastal routes and suffer in traffic.. For those of us that need to get from Point A to Point B quickly, we use the turnpike! It's a pretty long stretch, I'd say about 8 hrs drive top to bottom? Nothing like Texas, of course...:)

Happy Lost Day Elder-berries!

As far as it being Spring...I am very happy for everyone who is experiencing the pleasant weather across most of the US. But we've still got a foot of snow in the yard. But it's a great improvement from the three feet of snow in the yard that was there just last week! Woo Hoo!

Ame, can you provide me with the link to that polar bear cub pix in your avi? I know you'll probably be wanting to change it soon (now that it's spring), and I wanna blow it up, print it out, and frame it! He's SUCH a cutie!

The eppy? Oh, well. . .
:football:
GO, JACK! SCORE THAT TD!

What? You don't like football? :innocent:

Elders, lemme tell ya--I've seen the Canadian promo for next week's eppy.

If you were shocked at this week's ending--you ain't seen NOTHING, yet!

Wow, you blow me away Tom! First, because you could see beauty on Adak - that takes a very special person to be able to see beauty on a storm-swept treeless rock in the middle of the Aleutian Islands. :) Second, that there were women on Adak.

But I am very happy that you met your wife there... And you got that right about not turning down free land!

So, what sort of job did you do in the Navy?

Well...Adak wasn't totally treeless - there was "the Adak National Forest" which consisted of one tree! :biglaugh: The Navy had tried to plant trees there, but for some reason, that was the only one that took hold! So it stands there all by itself with a fence around it!

You'd be surprised how beautiful it was - (Here's (http://img324.imageshack.us/img324/3945/1221122112sv8.jpg) a pic of me there way back in '81 that my wife took on our 1st date!) Our base was surrounded with snowcovered mountains...there was a huge population of bald eagles (http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/2968/1481481481yy7.jpg)...I'm told that there were carabou & salmon fishing on the other side of the island. It was a lot bigger island than you would think.
And yes, there were lots of women serving with the Navy there, but my wife was very special!

Just Google Adak, Alaska - & hit "images", & you'll find tons of beautiful pictures!

Happy St. Patrick's Day everybody!!

Irish Blessing
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

and a toast to you all....

May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.

Tom, I love hearing about you and your wife's courtship... Thanks for sharing the pics..

Dang! Nice photo! Obviously taken before the Navy changed its regs about wearing beards! Of course, being on windswept, cold Adak, having a beard on your face would be a great benefit...

I'm sort of teasing you about Adak, Tom. Adak is considered to be the "butt end" of a lot of jokes in Alaska. Sort of how New Jersey is for people in Manhattan. Or how Mississippi is for Alabamians (that last one I'm just making up!).

From what I've heard, Adak has about the same kind of climate as northern Scotland and Ireland. What would you say about that?

ROFLMAO! Back in Indiana, we grew up making fun of Kentuckians!

Funny you should mention the climate in Adak - I walked across the base once, & during the time it took me - it rained...it snowed...and the sun came out! (I'm not exagerating! The weather was so weird there, on the rare occasions that the sun actually came out, the Captain would declare "Sunshine liberty" & give us all the day off!)
