View Full Version : Locke's Gaming Addiction
Saukkomies 03-08-2007, 11:03 AM Some people have wondered how Locke could have ignored his prisoner and been enticed back to play the chess game on the computer. For me, unfortunately, I have no problem at all in believing this. That is because I am a recovering game addict!
If I had been stuck on an island without any kind of interactive game to play with for three months, the prospect of playing a chess game with a computer would be completely irresistible. I really identified with Locke as he tried to resist going to the computer, and then eventually gave in and was drawn into the game. I would probably have done the same thing in his shoes.
We know that Locke has this tendency from part of his backstory. He loves to play games, and was shown demonstrating how to play the game Mouse Trap to a kid in one of the episodes. He also was playing a Risk-like game with one of his coworkers. Game playing is in Locke's blood...
So, perhaps after they get rescued, Locke should check in to On-Line Gamers (http://www.olganonboard.org/)Anonymous for rehab!
GaiusKnight 03-08-2007, 11:09 AM He did play Backgammon while on the Island.
palomino_grl78 03-08-2007, 11:14 AM Yeah can't fault him there...how many of us spend hours on the fuselage when there is more important business at hand (like writing a 25 page paper and such). I can't cast any stones his way, that's for sure.
I also think that one of these days, Locke's gaming passion and "expertise" might actually turn out to be a good thing.
Annamorgana 03-08-2007, 11:19 AM I agree with you! My roommate loves video games and can zone out completely. She plays her games and there can be a fire in the kitchen or I'm spilling out my soul to her and it wouldn't break the little bubble that is around her. Locke I think just kinda zoned out for a minute there, because the look on his face when he finally came in on the fight was kind of WHA?! I've seen some posts that are suspisous of Mr. Locke and what he really was doing in the other room, but I think you've nailed it. :D
Mr. Find 03-08-2007, 11:45 AM He did play Backgammon while on the Island.
And there was the war board game in the Walkabout flashback. I dunno' why but I wonder if he has always been the black or white side in the ganes he's played.
mikey_mike 03-08-2007, 11:49 AM the man definitely needs some help, particularly if he is addicted to based in DOS! God help him if Dharma actually had Windows or something. I can just imagine him sitting down to a of Sim City or something and never being heard from again...

Funniest thing I've ever read on these boards!! :rotflmao2:
HeadFirstForHalos 03-08-2007, 12:30 PM I wonder if that old computer had the "Oregon Trail" game?
Then I could totally understand what Locke did.

I guess you're right. I was shocked when Locke left Mikhail on the ground (how did he get unbound so quickly??) to play the game.....but, spending a lot of my free time on the computer...I guess I could understand....Locke was still pretty trustworthy (ignorant?) of Mikhail, and I guess he thought he had a few minutes to kill.

Loved this so much...totally Locke's character...though he really needs to be more alert to people he doesn't know saying manipulative things. As soon as Mikhail said that, i knew something was up.
Anyway Terry cracked me up in these scenes, he always tends to balance the serious on the edge :LockeOranges:

:D He'd be a complete vegetable! ha ha thats great!
Imagine Locke on warcraft, civilization, command&conquer or Sims? HaHa you're right we'd never see him again!

"Hey, stay put, you dad-blasted deer!"
>kapow<
"Dag-nabbit! Hey, Come back here, ya varmint!"
>kapow, kapow<
"Crazy good-fer-nuthin mouse clicker!"
calhoun 03-08-2007, 08:16 PM Seems odd to me that he was really careful about getting the numbers right in the swan, but in the flame he'll just smash away and see what happens.
Personally, I would be worried about losing the game. The game itself could of been another failsafe device.
~Lirpa~ 03-08-2007, 10:57 PM Just smash away? He was being deliberate. He was given a code to enter and he did.
Tiny Time Machine 03-09-2007, 12:00 AM If the Others want to eliminate the John Locke threat just put him in a room with a fridge, microwave, and a laptop set up with World of Warcraft. He'd never be a problem again.

Yeah because you can't just give up on the world.......of......warcraft...
Total South Park crossover reference.
42ndFloor 03-12-2007, 10:46 PM As someone who is pretty certain he has a gaming addiction, if I was Locke, I'd be pretty aware that what was going on is similar to Myst. I'd be so down with holding the Russian dude prisoner, that an Atari version of Chess would have no sway over me!
Play the Island -- The Ultimate Game!
At least, that's how the Island's been playing Locke...
linerk 03-12-2007, 11:41 PM I don't know, I'm no good at chess but roller coaster tycoon, the longest journey, even the blade runner game and I would have trouble staying away...probably the sims too, haven't played it yet.
