so when patchy sees John playing the chess game...he says dont even bother, it was programmed after grand masters, plus...it cheats.
Locke responds by saying that hes been around many computers and they dont cheat, thats what makes humans so wonderful.
Patchy just gives a sly grin over this matter. Could this hint toward a possible idea that there is some form of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the island..that would support why ther is a security system (black smokey) running amuk on the island.
also, did the imploded hatch's computer have that same ability to...cheat (in other words, have the control to do something)?

Ben cheats though.

I'm going with the idea the game was running in a player1 vs. player2 mode with Captain bunny killer at the other end trying to get Locke to punch one of the codes. Someone was watching on the camera, Ben is recuperating in the barracks now, and as the head honcho probably has a computer of his own there.

But if there was a real person playing on the other end, couldn't he or she have pressed the button themselves? Why have a game set up? That whole thing is confusing me.

the point the person who started this thread is trying to make is........computers, regardless of how sophisticated, etc. are dumb! they don't think for themselves! they can only do what a human tells them to do!? if anyone remembers the movie where the computer taught itself to play / win / lose in tic tac toe? (war games) so i guess the possibility that someone else is playing the game can be true, but the person that started this thread brings up the possibility that AI does exist on this island, and if so, that raises even more questions about this show! how many things, etc. on /about this island are AI? i read somewhere that dharma ( i think?) did experiments or had ideas of having machines do work , like robots, etc.? not sure where, why, how right now, but i do remember this whole idea related to LOST , so this makes me wonder if the computer was playing locke w/o the help of a person?

:eek2:

well if you consider that someone would be playing this chess game if "hostiles" were attacking then I'm assuming that the game has a specific move sequence that unlocks the video terminal. otherwise....you would sit there playing chess while hostiles are attacking.

Or else you would have to make sure that everyone manning the station was very good (and quick) at chess!

I'd bet Sawyer's stash that Ben was on the other end of the terminal, I'm surprised this didn't seem to occur to Locke though. :undecide:

the idea im trying to throw out ther in this thread..is that perhaps Dharma created machines..or technology..maybe even Smokey McTreeChomper, and after a while it developed a mind of its own..and took control..and the Initiative had to end...and its in the computers...like when the comp spoke to Micheal..what if it was the computer taking control..and helping the others?

If that's the case then John was extremely lucky/unlucky (depending on how you look at the resulting situation) to stumble across that one sequence of moves out of the billions of possible combinations.

The log of moves shown on the winning screen doesn't actually coincide with the game being played, somehow locke pushes the buttons twice in that sequence and yet it clearly show's him having made 4 moves to win...

the first and last moves apparently are worthy of little clicking sound effects yet the middle two don't deserve any sound effects, cute voice saying "your move" or general existance at all. the whole scene seems to flow together extremely well and doesn't appear to have a break in the action so where do they come from? and if they are a result of the comp cheating how did locke not even notice?
