View Full Version : Discrepancies in appearance for Boone and Ethan

I realize that it has been almost three years since the pilot was filmed, and two and a half since the bulk of season 1 was shot...and I know that you can't change the regular cast's look much to match a flashback because of continuity now...but is it really so hard to cut/color/whatever the hair on some of the guest actors to match their appearance back then? Shannon's look was the same, and Arzt was okay, but Boone's wig was just godawful, and William Mapother has sported a different haircut and color in every single return appearance he's had over three years. In his original story arc his hair was very short and very dark--not shaggy and reddish/blondish/whatever. You can't change what age and weight gain have done to his looks for a few minutes onscreen, but fixing his hair should be easy. (Unless he plans to offer Nikki the directions to his supply of Miss Clairol and a set of extensions to go along with those extra clothes!)

Damon and Carlton stated in this week's podcast that they had to use the wig on Ian because they couldn't ask him to cut his hair for two days of work.

Sun and Claire got bangs recently. Maybe there is a Salon Hatch. j/k

Okay, I can see that, especially since Ian is a model who probably paid a lot for whatever haircut he has now and is financially dependent on maintaining his "look." But couldn't they at least get him a better wig? And I don't understand why they let Ethan's look run all over the road. William Mapother has been popping up all season, and I don't think he has any such excuse for looking vastly different every time.

I think they have done a pretty good job keeping the regulars looking the same. This is a TV show, they can't expect an actor to come up for one episode filming and be able to revert their appearance completely to when they were actually on the show.

Boone's wig was just godawful

Maybe he borrowed it from the Staff station? His hair color was different when he was a regular on the show, wasn't it? Oh well, he still looked better this time around than he did in "Further Instructions."

Remember Jack's bad wig in "Man of Science, Man of Faith?"

I think these bad wigs could be the key to solving the puzzles on LOST. Stay tuned for my "Bad Wig Theory."

I always thought the, um... not very good wigs were a running joke in the fandom? ;) I seriously didn't see an issue with Boone's hair, though, and while I agree about Ethan, at least his hair was closer to s1 than in Not in Portland.

In all seriousness, I think that they did the best they could to recreate something shot 3 years ago. The clothing was the same, so the hair was a bit off - does it really make a difference in terms of continuity? We understand the intention of the writers here, and I thought that they did a really good job of recreating what had to be a very complex scene to shoot initally -- the crash on the beach.

I agree. I don't really think that such minor points of continuity are worth debating.

They did their best. Give 'em a break.

Seconded. Forget the medium, consider the message ppl.

Thirded. Hair grows, actors move on after leaving a show, wigs aren't perfect. I just hope people don't start using this thread as some way to "prove" the "time shift/split" theories going on in other threads...

Or, maybe we can all just accept what D & C said (read bakerboys post above).

Fourthed? Can one fourth? Anyway, I got a laugh at the podcast prior to Expose where either Damon or Carlton said that if we go on about Boone's hair, they just can't help us anymore (or something to that effect). The better wig was Jack's surgeon mullett anyway!

How about early in the first season when Sawyer's haircut changed radically the next episode (a day later or so in Lost-time) because, according to a DVD commentary, the producers hired a new hairstylist. How many hair styles did he have that season anyway, like three or four? It freaked me out!!!

Lets just be happy that the Boone and Shannon are getting some facetime on the show. I never cared one way or the other about them, but I now love them in comparison to Nikki and Paulo.

Funny how any topic, at any moment, could devolve into a lashing out at Nikki and Paulo. I'll miiss them for that reason. But no other.

can this topic be 5th?

shannon, her brother ... bud, buddy... boone whatever,
and ethan were just background for the story.

that's all. and the story is still believable
in my correct opinion.

let's not be so nerdy as to feign discontentment
because something doesn't perfectly fit the "lost canon".

I don't know about nerdy cannons.

I just don't understand why a big budget network TV show can't give Boone a wig that matches the hair color he used to have when he was a regular. It's like killing off Locke and then bringing him back with Bozo hair.

I hear on the grapevine that Lou Ferrigno may be contemplating a custody battle. ABC legal department get ready!

I'm telling you people these bad wigs mean something! Stay tuned for my "The-Others-Are-A-Community-Theater-Group Theory"!

Sixthed.

This isn't a movie. There's really no such thing as "big budget network TV". The Lost pilot is one of a kind; if you looked at the ferry scene in Grey's Anatomy (and given Grey's current hit status, you would imagine they can spend as much as they want), it was not even par with your average B-list disaster movie. I doubt much had been allocated to the props department. At least give the production crew credit for trying to match the look. They couldn't even maintain the "cave" set in S1 when they introduced the "hatch" set in S2 for budget reasons.

I know this is totally nitpicky, but it really bothered me that Nikki had black fingernail polish. That's a pretty recent trend--within the past year. I kept thinking to myself "she wouldn't have been wearing that polish in 2004!" I'm just gonna cut the stylist/make up artist some slack though cuz it's so freakin' minor.

Boone's hair was a representation of Smokey.

I dated a girl who wore black fingernail polish in 1984-85, over 20 years ago.

mm yeah, guess I'm really splitting hairs with the black fingernail polish. I knew it though, just had to bring it up.
