View Full Version : What should of have happened?
1LovesLost 03-29-2007, 10:44 AM Hey losties, I'd like to start this thread off by saying that I'm attempting to not be negative about the Expose episode. However, I found myself confused, dismayed, and disappointed at what took place in the episode. We have been strongly led to believe that there were going to be major revelations in the NIkki and Paulo episode, however I still don't know what those major revelations could have been. So I'm posing the question to you all that found the episode lackluster, disappoiting etc. What in your opinion should have happened to make the episode more pivotal? Should Paulo have been proven to have been working with the Others? Should Ethan have approached Nikki and Paulo about helping the Others? I personally would have enjoyed seeing these two questions played out within the Expose episode. Any thoughts please?
QueenElessar 03-29-2007, 11:13 AM What I don't understand (and I mean no offense by this) is that whenever TPTB talk about learning stuff...or characters being iconic...everyone thinks it has to die into the greater mythology of the island somehow.
Every episode can't be about that...and I don't think I'd want to watch if it was.
I think being buried alive is HUGE. I don't think they're going to come back from that...I think they're screwed. How creepy is that?
I think this episode was a couple of things that made it great:
1. An interesting exercise in looking at things from the perspective of different characters. They took us back through time we are SO familiar with at this point and let us see that there were other people whose points of view we were never privy too who had stories happening as well.
2. It was like a creepy twighlight zone episode. Because this was like a freaky incident that occured outside of all 'the other' stuff and the normal island mythology that concerns our main heroes. It was creepy...and eery...and it will probably never be addressed again (at least I hope). These two people went through this horrible thing and no one will ever know what happened to them. ACK
3. The plot for our heroes (Sawyer, Charlie, Hurley Sun) was kind of like a funny crime show...like Moonlighting or something...I loved the way it was structured with them trying to put it all together...
I don't think I'd want anything else to happen that didn't
I think having Pikki invovled with 'the others' would be too much...not everything is part of some larger conspiracy.

I love your post. You view this exactly the same as me. It was a fantastic episode. No it did not (I think) advance the mythology by leaps and bounds, but it was incredibly entertaining and was a HUGE payoff on these two characters. I knew as I was watching it that some people were going to hate it, and I guess I feel bad for them because, wow, it was such a great hour of televison. Again, I love your post.

I guess what I am wondering now is what was the huge payoff and the answer to the "Jump the shark moment", TPTB spoke off??? Somehow in my mind I have always taken into account the other characters and perpectives not shown with the story, (background characters, characters included within the LE, etc.). However I am more interested in the foregoings of the characters directly invested in the overall scope of advancement in the storyline. For some reason, I was not totally convinced that Pikki had a payoff, or if so what it was? Arzt was an amazing background character, and in some ways I don't feel Pikki lived up to that standard. Just my opinion, but I did enjoy the episode. ;)

First off, don't pay attention to promos or what TPTB say - they have certain things envisioned in their mind, but the fans may not necessarily view it in the same light. TPTB know how this season ends, and we don't - the "jump the shark moment" may have already happened, but we as fans may think it's going to happen in one of the next three episodes for example.
This episode was excellent, and if they are on the 5 season plan, this was the turning point - IMHO the first two seasons the writers threw out a huge fishing net of storylines and plot points, and now they are starting to reel them in, eliminating possibilities, giving a different perspective on events we have already seen to direct the story in a specific direction.
This episode was masterfully done, and I was watching this last night going OMG Holy Crap - that's what happened - it points to forces besides "the others" working against the survivors. Nikki and Paulo could have prevented a lot of the stuff that had happened if they had just told people what they had seen. Boone may not have died if they had mentioned the plane or the hatch to everyone else since they may have gone as a group to explore instead of Locke and Boone sneaking off, but N&P were too busy worrying about their own selfish needs to let everyone else know what the hell is going on. The Survivors could have seen Desmond in the Swan before they ever blew open the hatch, they could have explored the flame while there was still a possibility to communicate to the outside world and have been rescued by now - but the self-absorbed quality to human nature prevented that.
I can't wait to see what else we may have missed (what was intentionally kept out of the shows - i.e. Locke seeing the smoke monster and other things) that would help to explain how a lot of the moments that we have complained about actually fit into the overall story arc
fairyprincess37 03-29-2007, 05:13 PM I think this show accomplished exactly what it set out to do:
1. Show past events on the island through a different perspective. They have done this before with the entering of the hatch and I believe a few other times. Just because alot of people were not interested in N & P's perspective did not make it unimportant to the story.
2. It answered a few questions like how Ben thinks regarding using people to get things he wants.
3. Continued to creep ME out (and many others I am sure) with the "buried alive" thing......wow
While not my favorite episode, I really did enjoy it and think it was written well.
Peace out - FP
You know there is only one thing that irritated me about this episode, and it doesn't irritate me at the writers, it just makes me mad at Paolo. He heard the whole conversation between Juliet and Ben. WHY didn't he say something about this to Jack, Kate and Sawyer? Even if he didn't know their last names, he had to know that Jack is a doctor. Maybe he could have said something like "Hey Doc, you're last name wouldn't happen to be Shepherd would it? Because if so..." You get my point LOL I'm guessing he didn't say anything because he didn't want to reveal the Pearl station to them and thus his hiding place, but that just makes him even more of a selfish jerk. (Find a new hiding place and possibly help your fellow castaways?)
Overall, I liked the episode well enough. I am just taking it at face value. I would have been happier with an episode that contributed more to the story lines we already have going on, because there are so many, but I am not all worked up about it.
minnesotan_grl83 03-29-2007, 06:32 PM This episode made me think Nikki is a two faced b*tch!!! LOL Yes, very sad!! I would have changed the whole revenge story into a more revealing sense that one of them maybe knew Ben. Or knew one of the others?
lost1963 03-29-2007, 06:40 PM i was waiting for them to jump out of the graves and yell "im alive". they gave us a long screen shot.........and then it ended.
i did love it tho.
Admiral Erik Pressman 03-29-2007, 06:42 PM I agree that the episode was actually pretty good in it's own right, and actually told us some important things.
But I'm going to have to agree with 1LovesLost that I was still pretty disappointed. Like I said, not because of the actual quality of the episode, but because it had been hyped up so much. Now it might be my fault that I let myself get exicted about it, but it does seem like TPTB talked it up a lot, and that there were a lot of foilers going around (again, probably my own fault). But, just for the record, TPTB said that they would jump the shark in this episode, and I really don't see how that happened.

:D That would have been funny!! Freak them out!! "I'm aliiiiive!"

Thank You Admiral for getting my point with this thread. I did like the quality of the ep, and it was entertaining . However it did not move the story forward as stated by TPTB. I also agree that my disappointment is my own fault for listening or believing anything they state. But shouldn't Lost have a standard of moving the story forward in some way with each episode??? We are in season three, and it was more stand alone ep, than moving the story forward ep. Which is even more disappointing that the statements TPTB. IMO TPTB have not been able to make an equally entertaining episode and also have the episode move the story forward. It's season three and we still don't know what this show is really about. That's kind of not cool :drowsy:.
P.S. Admiral, judging from your avatar your a BSG fan, how about that season end episode!!!!!!!!!! My brain almost exploded by the end!!!!! I LOVED IT :ntworthy:.
But shouldn't Lost have a standard of moving the story forward in some way with each episode???
Absolutely not. Some episodes need to be just for fun/whatever. That's the whole problem with expectations of "I want forward advancement!" Enjoy the ride. It won't last forever.

I do enjoy the ride, however we are more than half done with season 3. Yet we do not know what the show is really about??? And when I refer to advancement I do not mean every episode, every scene, every sentence. Just something at this point??? Wanting more from the storyline and TPTB does not mean I don't enjoy light fun things within Lost.
