According to an article, Sawyer's character was written as one of the primary characters in the original script but with a different name and originally from Buffalo NY.* The name and Southern origins were changed specifically for Josh Holloway because they liked what they saw at his read.* (Good move by the way in keeping him!!!!!)

Jack's character was originally written to die but that part of the script has since changed too...at least it has so far.

Can we glean from this as an indication as to whom the writers were intending Kate on having a more permanent romantic interest with?
