care_n_jim 04-04-2007, 10:50 PM OK so has anyone on the island EVER told the truth --
How many people have pulled a scam on atleast one other person on the island or off -
I think we should get a list going for those that have been HONEST!
Seriously a list of Lies and a List of Truths --
I cannot think of anyone that has been honest on the island!
BillToons 04-04-2007, 11:14 PM True.. they are ALL scoundrels
lost_gypsy 04-04-2007, 11:20 PM Jack is good.
care_n_jim 04-04-2007, 11:22 PM Jack is good.
But Jack has lied!
ZoeWashburne 04-04-2007, 11:26 PM But Jack has lied!
That is true. I think while they have all told lies/scammed and what not, there are differences in intent. Like Hurley tonight scammed Sawyer, but his motivations were actually good - to help Sawyer. Contrast that to someone like Locke, who lied about Boone's injuries and happily sacrificed him up to the island.
It's like how everyone on the island pretty much has murdered someone, but with different intents again. Kate killed in cold blood, as we were reminded tonight. Hurley may have killed twice (the dock and Nikki and Paolo) but both were unintentional.
shootfire 04-04-2007, 11:38 PM Has Jin ever lied? I can't remember a time he ever did.
Islandprincess 04-04-2007, 11:39 PM Billtoons,
Not true. I can't think of anything Rose and Bernard have done which is dishonest...
That's why I miss them so much. They're a "compass" for the show. While the losties seem to be directionless, Bernard and Rose are the paternal/maternal figures on the show who give them direction...they're decent.
PapaThor 04-04-2007, 11:46 PM you are right. r (rose) & b (bernard) were pretty good people.
i vote for r & b being the most honest.
and of course vincent wouldn't lie. unless.............
on a side note, if any of us were on the island,
would be tell the truth to a bunch of strangers
on a plane? hmm? makes you think, right?
sunshinekitty1 04-04-2007, 11:48 PM Aaron and Vincent haven't lied.
Rose let Bernard believe she was cured by the man in Australia, but that lie wasn't meant to deceive.
care_n_jim 04-04-2007, 11:50 PM Rose lied to Bernard - she said that the guy healed her when he told her he couldn't!
I see that someone else pointed this out while I was typing!
Tronny 04-04-2007, 11:55 PM i don't think hurley has lied to anyone
ashcookie 04-05-2007, 12:08 AM Walt?
care_n_jim 04-05-2007, 12:14 AM Hurley lied to Sawyer tonight -
Aaron hasn't lied good point - although he has lied around an awful lot ;)
100%
Walt lied to his dad about being with Locke and starting the fire
Locked_In 04-05-2007, 01:13 AM Jack is good.
Sorry, don't agree with you on this one.
Jack stalked his ex-wife.
Accused his dad of sleeping with Jack's ex-wife at an AA meeting then attacked Dad.
Jack has lied a big bunch of times.
He led his own people into a trap with a poorly planned rescue.
Jack hasn't murdered anyone that we know of yet, but his armour isn't any shinier than any of the other Losties.
tiewashere 04-05-2007, 01:17 AM Jin hasnt lied.
100%
Neither has Bernard
100%
I dont think claire has either
Jonesy 04-05-2007, 01:34 AM Artz?
(ps --fun thread!)
Lost_in_CA 04-05-2007, 01:35 AM Jin lied off the island to his father-in-law. He didn't tell him his father was a fisherman because he was ashamed. And he didn't tell Sun the truth about what he did for her father or where the puppy came from.
adr55555 04-05-2007, 01:41 AM Claire and Bernard get my vote.
Jonesy 04-05-2007, 01:56 AM Didn't Bernard lie to Rose (by omission) about visiting the man in Australia?
And what about Claire and her mom. Didn't she lie (again by omission) about her pregnancy? If I remember right, she didn't tell her about it. Of course her mom was in a coma, but a lie is a lie, right?
My vote still goes to Artz.
klughs 04-05-2007, 02:17 AM i don't think bernard lied to rose, i think he just told her he was taking her somewhere as a surprise...
bernard, scott/steve, cindy, the two tailie kids, and aaron get my votes :)
oh, and what was the name of that guy that goodwin killed? we didn't see him lie either, haha.
Distress Signal 04-05-2007, 02:27 AM Contrast that to someone like Locke, who lied about Boone's injuries and happily sacrificed him up to the island.
"Happily"? Where are you coming from? Oh, you mean Locke was grinning when the plane fell and figured he had better things to do than fight the temporary paralysis in his legs while carrying Boone over his back all the way from the cliff to the caves where Jack was. And he was pretty enthusiastic over the hatch at night. Amazing. :drowsy:
I can't think of anyone really who hasn't lied, except for maybe Artz. And he wasn't used for much. It's probably one of THE major themes of Lost. All these strangers with sordidly tangled pasts are stuck on a deserted island together after crashing. Who would open up their life stories? It's 3 years to us, but only 3 months for them. How should they exactly trust each other? I can see it as realistic. Plus dramatic.
LadyJ27 04-05-2007, 02:38 AM doh... sorry for my failing memory, but when did Jack lie?
(other than to the Others: "I'm a repo man... I'm a people person so I really love it." haha, still gets me)
lost168 04-05-2007, 02:43 AM Everyone is entitled to one's own secrets, and lies to protect those secrets.
Hey_Freak 04-05-2007, 12:50 PM Everyone is entitled to one's own secrets, and lies to protect those secrets.
It is too simplistic to say that none of the Losties are good or honest because they've lied once or a few times on island or in FB. That's making them live up to standards that we don't in the real world. Who hasn't told white lies? who hasn't played a joke or a trick on someone? It depends on your intentions. That's exactly why I wouldn't put Sayid, Jack, Claire, Desmond, Rose, Jin and a hell of a lot of the rest in the dishonest category as if they've lied they always seem to do it with the best of intentions at least.
Laurieg 04-05-2007, 01:02 PM I don't think it comes down to lie or not lie
I'm starting to think it comes down to
Prey or preditor.
Sawyer
Kate
Jin
Were all preditors. They searched out and hurt/killed other people. All for their own reasons
John
Charlie
Sun
Micheal
All victims of what other people did to them.
Of course these lists should both be much longer. I'm just trying to get the idea out there.
care_n_jim 04-05-2007, 10:20 PM But we teach our kids NOT to lie - a lie is a lie white lie for the good a trick or not - it is still a lie -
And to me it seems that the people on the island seem to tell a lot of white lies or lies in general -
Is there really anyone that we have gotten to know that can talk that has been honest more than not??
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-05-2007, 10:27 PM doh... sorry for my failing memory, but when did Jack lie?

Immediately from returning from the cockpit, Boone asks Jack if they found anything, and Jack tells him they didn't.
On the commentary for the episode, they explain they wanted to set up a running theme of Jack lying to Boone specifically and repeatedly.
care_n_jim 04-05-2007, 10:46 PM I wonder why they would want to set up Jack lying to Boone????
Lady EKO 04-05-2007, 10:53 PM I think it was a way for Jack to be "connected" with Boone's death.
Cool thread car_n:65:
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-05-2007, 10:53 PM I wonder why they would want to set up Jack lying to Boone????
Perhaps to set up the irony of having Jack pumping blood into Boone's arm and then basically having to let him die.
Exodus666 04-05-2007, 10:56 PM Desmond!
Because Jesus never lies.
-Exodus
care_n_jim 04-05-2007, 11:06 PM HUM - Desmond - has he lied?????
I can't think of any lies of hand - anyone have one???
Why do you think he is Jesus - just curious?
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-05-2007, 11:09 PM HUM - Desmond - has he lied?????

It could be said he lied by omission not being up front about what happens when you don't push the button at the beginning of season 2.
care_n_jim 04-05-2007, 11:11 PM DId he really know what would happen or did he just have a warning of what might happen?
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-05-2007, 11:19 PM DId he really know what would happen or did he just have a warning of what might happen?
Yeah, he saw the hatch getting trashed and the hieroglyphics per his flashback in LTDA, but didn't mention this to the losties (on camera) at the beginning of season 2. He just offered to have them watch the movie.
NapTime 04-05-2007, 11:21 PM Cool thread - I'm glad it wasn't the shortest ever.
Everyone has lied at some point IRL, so I love that these characters are all so human. I think some have made lying a way of life though.
Could honesty have something to do with the Lists and who is one them?
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-05-2007, 11:37 PM Lying is the least of any of these characters' worries. They've all killed someone, or at the very least, put someone in a coma.
CountChocula 04-05-2007, 11:46 PM I don't think Michael or Claire ever lied.
100%
HUM - Desmond - has he lied?????

The actor who played Desmond also played Jesus in a movie.
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-05-2007, 11:48 PM I don't think Michael or Claire ever lied.
Michael lied his pants off to get the fab four abducted.
care_n_jim 04-05-2007, 11:49 PM Michael lied to everyone about who shot AL and Libby

Cool that Desmond played Jesus in a movie - would be interesting if he has some of the qualities of Jesus on Lost as well -
Kathleen1 04-06-2007, 01:49 PM Artz didnt lie about the spiders
LadyJ27 04-07-2007, 03:35 AM Immediately from returning from the cockpit, Boone asks Jack if they found anything, and Jack tells him they didn't.
On the commentary for the episode, they explain they wanted to set up a running theme of Jack lying to Boone specifically and repeatedly.
Ah yes... lying about the cockpit.
Thats interesting, I never noticed a theme about Jack and his relationship with Boone.
Are the commentaries available for every episode, or only a select few on each disc?
RodimusBen 04-07-2007, 09:47 AM About Desmond, I would also consider it deceptive that he asked Claire to move so he coudl fix the roof on her shelter when it was actually because Charlie was going to be struck by lightning.
I don't think Tom has ever lied, has he? I mean, other than wearing a disguise, but I don't think that's the same as lying. He never claimed to be anything other than who he was, even in the first scene when he abducted Walt.
kN3eLb4Z0d 04-07-2007, 11:25 AM Ah yes... lying about the cockpit.

I think there's only four episodes on the season 1 DVDs that have commentaries.. let me check..
Yes, only four: Pilot 1/2, Walkabout, The Moth, and Hearts and Minds. I guess you could say that's five, but I won't split hairs.
100%
I don't think Tom has ever lied, has he?
Tom was lying about Kate not being his type. Kate is *everyone's* type. But not more so than Juliet. I don't know. It's all so confusing. It's like I'm 12 all over again.
It's like trying to choose between Maddie Hayes and Laura Holt. It's impossible.
lockeisthekey 04-07-2007, 11:39 AM Tom was lying about Kate not being his type. Kate is *everyone's* type. But not more so than Juliet. I don't know. It's all so confusing. It's like I'm 12 all over again.
I'm sure you're not serious... NO woman will be everyone's type, imo. I find Kate
very cute, but Juliet (to me) isn't even pretty at all. My son agrees.
Besides, Tom was most likely NOT lying--he could be gay for all we know. Maybe Jack is his type.
I don't find Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise appealing, and many women do. SO, they are
not my type even though they are universally considered "hot". Just proving the
point that no one is 'everyone's type'.
Back to the thread subject though. I see a vast difference between the folks who lie on a daily basis- kind of make a habit of it- versus those who might lie once in awhile.
It will be interesting to find out (if we ever do) what the Others see as "GOOD" enough
for the lists. It might just be the biggest mystery on the show.

Thou hath called it. I am in a state of complete non-seriousness. :hypocrit::hypocrit::hypocrit:
Now, apologize to Mr. Cheney before you anger him further.
care_n_jim 04-07-2007, 08:31 PM I wonder if Ben is on the list - he seems to be a rather BIG liar!
Locked_In 04-07-2007, 08:53 PM Jack has lied a bunch of times. His most memoriable for me is when he led the Losties into the trap without telling them it was a trap. Ok. Maybe it was a lie of omission instead of commission, but deceit just the same.
I still believe everyone in this show needs their mouth washed out with soap for lying.
care_n_jim 04-07-2007, 08:56 PM Jack has lied a bunch of times. His most memoriable for me is when he led the Losties into the trap without telling them it was a trap. Ok. Maybe it was a lie of omission instead of commission, but deceit just the same.

There isn't enough soap on the island!
Locked_In 04-07-2007, 11:50 PM There isn't enough soap on the island!
You have a very good point there!
