I don't know if this was something that has been seen before in other episodes, but when Smokie was shown by the fence there were two of them that merged together into super smokie, and then when it left they split off again and went in different directions.

it looks like one entity... that's pissed off really bad.

The Smoke Monster did not kill Nikki did, being burried alive is what killed her when. Because when Somkey wants you dead he will kill you, seeing that Nikki was alive at the very end of the eppy made me realize that it was just spiders

I thought the spiders were more of another one of Dhama's experiments. Just like the Polar Bears that live in Island Climates, the hurley bird etc.

On topic - It did split apart, but I guess that just makes it scarier because now we know it can be two things at once.

Yeah. If you look close he merged from three parts to one, then back to two. So that makes him one entity I think.

Actually three smokies right after the tree was uproot violently. Cerberus=3-headed dog...But only ONE smokie retreated.

I agree, he can split and then come back together. Reminds me of when I was a kid and we would break a thermometer just to play with the mercury. It could separate into smaller globs or join together into one big blob.

my first thought was why didn't it go over, but juliet had never seen it before, judging by her reaction. so it seems likely that it's always resided outside the fence.

I was thinking that Smokey actually felt pain. Reminds me of a wild animal touching a low voltage electrfied fence; it wouldn't think to go over it the 1st couple of times...

I've been thinking that Smokie is two parts, but maybe he is three,...

1. Birds - they always appear just before the monster. They screech like birds, fly over head, and then we see, and hear Smokie coming.

2. Monster - the mechanical, tear up the jungle, part of the monster.

3. Smoke - self-explanatory.

It's just a guess, that's all.

There are three smokies.

Three entities coming together to cause mayhem is commonly known in latin as molari encurli. So I am goning to use that phrase as my starting point for exhaustive research and get back to you guys later with what I find.

Didn't Rousseau call Smokey a "security" system or something? Cerberus was the guardian to the gates of hades. No living person could enter, and no dead could leave. The most common way to defeat Cerberus was music to lull it to sleep.

A theory I've come up with, I'm probably not the first one, but what the hell.
I've come to think that the monster has three forms, like the three heads of Cerberus. There's one that's just a scout, it floats around making a wispy chattering sound and usually doesn't come after the losties. After we see this one, it is usually followed a few minutes after by one (or both) of the other clouds. The second one is the brute force cloud that killed eko and uproots trees, it makes the dinosaur/elephant sound. A third espionage cloud, i believe, is the shape shifter and information gatherer, the one who flashes Juliet. I think the chain noise was the others controlling the monster and telling it to retrieve Locke. when this was unsuccessful, Ben infiltrated the lost camp as Henry Gale.

I haven't decided what it is, how the others control it, or much of anything else about it, but thats what I think. As always, anyone is welcome to add on, or point out some flaws in the theory.

Heres some intresting stuff from the wikipedia page for Ceberus:

Cerberus guarded the gate to Hades and ensured that spirits of the dead could enter, but none could exit (additionally no living person was to come into Hades).
Sorta parallels how there are some sort of conditions to come or go from the island. Is Smokey what stops people from leaving? Can it be you can only get back to the island in a near death situation? It would explain why everyone "crashes" onto the island. It also might explain why Desmond has gone back and forth to and from the island, every time he has come near death.
