Lots of loose ends on lost bother me, but this one in particular is really bugging me.
Why would they show those scientist guys at the end of the episode where desmond turns the key and then never address it again?
Am I missing something?
Seems like a major plot direction that they just seemed to abondon.
Any theories as to why'?

It sometimes takes awhile to get back to things on LOST. Remember how long it took to see what was inside the hatch? What about "Adam and Eve" from season one? The Black Rock ship etc.
Just par for the course. We can only wait and hope our patience is rewarded.

There were two people in some arctic location monitoring nearby electromagnetism because they work for Penny. The twist was supposed to be that somehow Penny knows about what happened to Desmond and that someone is getting on the right track to saving everyone.

They will get back to it in time. This season is all about the Others and who and what they are. The scientist don't fit into that right now.
I am kind of glad of the fact that they haven't shown us all of the answers to the mysteries yet. If anyone can remember Twin Peaks, the show died after they revealed who killed Laura Palmer. Tell the truth, if they came out and told you everything in the next episode, would you still watch the show with the same vigor that you did before. This show is about slowly peeling away the layers and discovery.

Just becuase they haven't mentioned it YET doesn't mean that they have abandoned it. They have plans for five seasons. We still have two and a half seasons to get all the answers we need.

Since time goes by quite slow in Lost (third season has only been a 2-3 weeks so far), it probably doesn't make sense to go back to that plot right away until it is relevant. Also, they show us things early and pay them off later all the time. This is part of having it planned out, they can do things like this to excite us and get us talking before exploring it more.

The simple answer: because it's important. :) As for why, I'm assuming that will be revealed later.

According to a recent podcast, we'll get more of that storyline this season.
