Just a thought about the fact the Jack was not suppose to live through the pilot episode. How do you think the story line would have changed if Jack wasn't around? In fact could the current story even exist with out Jack?
In your opinion is Jack a necessary character? I for one think he is very much needed but don't have a clue how the plot would be without him.

According to the producers, ABC demanding they keep Jack alive saved the show. They said it probably wouldn't have lasted beyond 10 episodes if they'd gone with their initial idea.

I guess it was 13 episodes. Here's the quote:

Undoubtedly they would've introduced another young and handsome caucasian actor to run counter to the scoundrel Sawyer. Perhaps they might've introduced Desmond earlier. Locke, Kate and Sawyer are not enough. I suppose TPTB could've developed Sayid or Michael some more...naw, we'd have had another straight-laced caucasian. Nathan Fillion perhaps.

I think Kate was supposed to have Rose's storyline, about being seperated from her husband. Then when Jack died, Kate would assume the leadership role.

Of course that was really early when all the characters were pretty different from how we know them now. Locke was to be a successful business man or something like that. Charlie was still a rockstar but middle aged.

I believe they changed a lot of characters based on feedback and the actors. For example Yunjin tried out for the role of Kate, they liked her so much they wrote her the role of Sun. And they liked Dom so much, they made the Charlie character younger, e.t.c.

I remember on the S1 DVD they had hoped to cast Michael Keaton for the role of Jack because it was pitched two him as a one episode event. Kate was to be the main character and the leader. Then something changed.

While I do not like Jack most of the time, I agree that his character is an anchor for the show. I'm glad they made the change to keep him alive. Although I tend to root against him, I've been a bit frustrated with the path his character has taken this season. Right now his storyline is almost back-burner as he is not the "leader" he once was.

I didn't know that and I think it's amazing! Anyway I think that Jack is necessary for this show. For me Jack=Lost
