This has been occupying my mind ever since re-watching TMFT.
Ben's by now famous quote about how he influences people is "I find out what they've emotionally invested in and then I exploit it."
Now, there is one thing, or rather one person,on this island that we know Ben himself has emotionally invested in. And that person is Alex. True enough, there is obvious conflict and tension between them because of Karl, because Alex knows her father is a manipulator, and probably also because Alex is a teenager and there is always conflict between teenagers and their parents .
But, her and Ben's behaviour in TMFT show that they do care about each other. Most importantly for my train of thoughts, Ben cares about Alex. No matter that he's a manipulator who doesn't hesitate to get violent if necessary, he raised her as his daughter and he cares for her.
Now, if there is a way to strike against Ben, then it's beating him at his own game of mindgames. And Sayid might just have started that. He already implanted doubt in Alex' mind in TMFT. ("You look just like your mother" - "My mother is dead." - "I'm sure that's what they told you.")
Quite a number of the Losties know about Danielle's connection to Alex. Amongst them, Sayid probably has the best connection to Danielle, and amongst the Losties, Sayid definitely is the one who has a just the right mindset to do what Ben usually does. After all, Sayid has ample experience in cracking people. And I figure that if there is one way to bring Ben into a situation where he no longer is in control is doing exactly that - using his emotional investment in Alex against him.
Any thoughts?
