View Full Version : Found Easter Egg: Bagua Hexagram #29 In the Sub
allergygal 04-12-2007, 02:27 PM I'm sure most everyone caught the "trigram" piece of the Dharma logo on theback of the sub guy's vest (http://bp1.blogger.com/_RrObyQ3XzcY/Rh22mAPyioI/AAAAAAAAD1k/XoYTmg4IvZ8/s1600-h/submen.jpg) and also on the outside of the sub (http://gallery.lost-media.com/albums/ep-caps/season3/3x16-oneofus/1/normal_oneofuscap-243.jpg). Just thought I'd point out that that trigram is KAN (http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Dharma_logo#I_Ching), which represents water and danger... a very fitting logo for the sub. ;)
Debisobsessed 04-12-2007, 02:29 PM I saw it but had no idea what i meant. Thanks.
piperdox 04-12-2007, 03:46 PM Looks like they had a couple of "the numbers" on that sub too. Hard to tell
GodBlessTexas 04-12-2007, 03:55 PM It represents Water, but it also represents career and lifepath on the bagua map (http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Image:Feng-1.gif).
LostOCD 04-13-2007, 08:11 PM I noticed a little something when the camera did a quick pan of the two guys sitting and drinking coffee as Juliette woke up and wandered in the submarine. I thought "Hey!" and rewound the ol' VCR and pressed pause only to find the bottom symbol of the Bagua on the back of one guy's jacket which, of course, is also part of the Dharma Initiative logo.
I know there has been a lot of I Ching talk concerning the show and this is a really fun easter egg TPTB are throwing us!
The symbol is this Kan. Please excuse my crude method of screencapping, my Luddite-like technology is limiting. Screencap from One of Us. (http://www.fotolog.com/kfk)
Here is an episode screencap that occurs just before it. (http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1272-224.html)
Kan is the 29th hexagram of the bagua. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I_Ching_hexagrams_1-32#Hexagram_29) Wikipedia lists it as having meanings that include "the abysmal (water)" and "repeated entrapment".
I particularly like the part about repeated entrapment. Hmmm...I think this says a lot about the sub and it's role in the whole getting to and leaving the island scenario.
When you click on the chinese symbol for this hexagram (Kan) in the table from this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagua_%28concept%29), you can see the meanings for the character. The second meaning for this character is "snare or trap" Love these kinds of easter eggs!!!
This is super sneaky in my opinion! Really cool too!
desmondslosthairstraighteners 04-13-2007, 08:29 PM Wow cool, good job. So this sign alludes to the whole submarine being a trap that gets you on the island and can't get off it (with a few exceptions).
Probably a little easter egg thrown in there to tell us that Juliet was falling into the trap.
Saukkomies 04-13-2007, 09:04 PM Excellent work! You have my utmost esteem for discovering this (as well as a bit of envy)! Good on ya mate!
TK 421 04-13-2007, 09:21 PM I saw that too and it's on the sub as well. It also means Water :) but I get the impression that each symbol has several layers of complimentary meanings and danger, abyss are there also. Another site that I saw today but can't remember where said it meant "Doorway to a new life" as well.
It seems throughout the ages there's been a few different interpretations of the bagua, kind of like ancient and not as ancient.

ame en peine 04-14-2007, 09:32 AM There was a thread here (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=76007) discussing that same thing..
Kel_C 04-14-2007, 11:01 AM On the sub too: http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage-1272-244.html
Lost Lenny 04-15-2007, 02:45 PM I noticed it too and did some research before I found this post. I'm going to mention a few other meanings of "Kan" and let's see if anyone can see a connection. Some of these seem obvious but some are not.
The symbol has...
Binary Value- 010
Name- Gorge
Nature- Water
Direction- North
Elemental- Luna (Moon)
Also, the symbol is 1 of 4 trigrams on the South Korean Flag representing Water. (the other 3 being Heaven, Earth and Fire)
One other variation I found was "Repeated Entrapment"...thought that was cool!
Water makes sense on a sub...direction makes sense based on Locke/Eko's stick saying look North...and Repeated Entrapment is kind of obvious, but what about the other meanings????
Binary value of 010...Meaning a Gorge or canyon...Elemental...Moon...any thoughts on these meanings?

Looks like they had a couple of "the numbers" on that sub too. Hard to tell
The numbers were 8-26...there was a green upside-down triangle as well.
allergygal 04-16-2007, 04:55 AM The numbers were 8-26...there was a green upside-down triangle as well.
I'm pretty sure it's B-26. screencap (http://bp2.blogger.com/_RrObyQ3XzcY/RiHeCQPylII/AAAAAAAAEJk/yTUwQHuce3I/s1600-h/1_11_04_07_11_34_11.jpg)
guinsu 04-16-2007, 11:42 AM Isn't it also the symbol for "second son"? I.e. Benjamin as opposed to Joseph in the bible. I wonder if we will ever see a Joseph even if Jacob is just "the man behind the curtain".
