While the boys were having their ghost stories, Hurley starts one about a bear with spikes on its back. He doesn't get to finish, but manages to get out "Chupa".
I would really like some Latino/Latina insight on this. I have never heard the Chupa Cabra described as a bear. I only know it as a type of skeleton/boogie man thing, that in some stories has the ability to fly.
Please feel free to correct my spelling. I am sure it is wrong, because I have only heard the stories. That will point me in the right direction for my searches.

Thanks for info. Based on spelling confirmation, here are some spooky links: http://cryptozoo.monstrous.com/evidences_chupacabra.htm

I´m Brazilian and I heard some of these stories.
What I´ve always imagined them to be like (imagined because I´ve never seen a picture or whatever) are some king of big beasts. WIth enormous teeth. Not a bear.
Never heard that they could fly, but I guess stories change as the origin changes.
In my mind i´ve always pictured them to be more like huge humanoids.

Your spelling is perfect. Chupa cabra means "sucks goats"

I have seen depictions of them on Mexican art work...usually some egg shaped sugar coated confection, sometimes clay masks. I am very interrested in variations of the legend. If the translation = goat sucker, I wonder if the story evolved in places with vampire bat populations. I can't wait to find out the significance with in Lost. Hurley's seemingly unimportant 1/2 phrases always turn out to be little gold mines of easter eggy stuff.
Thanks alot.

I have no idea what this title is. I seriously only watch the news, democracy now (real news) and Lost.

Chupacabra was a running joke for a long time where I work. I have always been under the assumption that is was half goat/half monster...but looking it up on wiki it does say it does suck goat blood.

A Chupacabra is usually described as a small, alien-like creature with big red eyes, huge claws and spikes down its back. I believe they stand on their two back dog-like legs and are said to be able to leap great distances. As mentioned by others, the name means goat sucker. I have never heard them described as bear like. They have the bad reputation of attacking and killing goats and other animals by sucking the blood from them. The stories and supposed sightings of the Chupacabras began in Brazil and has spread northward. Coming to a town near YOU!!

You are right. We have those here in South Texas in the Rio Grande Valley.
It's folklore, but mostly it is the kind of story that is used to explain the
unexplainable. Out on the borderlands, it's no laughing matter.

Most of the time it's a cougar, coyote, ocelot, bobcat or whatever. It's the
"whatever" that starts the stories.

The goats (and some cows) are sucked dry of blood and what is left is
just bones and skin. It's quite a sight to see. Then again, we have all
sorts of critters and varments that are not in any classification system.

Now a Jackalope [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackalope ] that's fake.
The family back in Scotland and Spain, they love to share postcards
of our Valley Jackalopes with their friends.

Nice catch, I had not noticed what Hurley was referring to.

I first heard the story about El Chupacabra about 10 years ago when Mulder was investigating some odd deaths of cattle and people in an X -Files episode called "El Mundo Gira" .

I thought that was what he was gonna say but the bear thing kinda confused me.

Yeah, that's the description I've always read (I'm really into cryptozoology). Some accounts even say there's something kangaroo like about it. Very creepy.

I'm pretty sure those pics the op linked to turned out to be a fox or dog with mange.

I thought of that XFiles episode when Hurley mentioned it too. There was another reference in the XFiles, if I remember correctly, during another mystery where Scully said "It's not that goat thing again is it?" or something like that.

During Season 1, many speculated that the monster on Lost is actually a Chupa Cabra.

I am sure someone already beat me to the punch but chpacabras means "goat sucker." It is supposedly a creature that lives in the south/west -- Mexico & Texas -- mostly. They are said to prey at night on goats, dogs, chickens and other small animals. I've seent hem described as being short creatures that walk on their hind legs, have claws, fangs and a row of spikes running down their basck. Lastly they are said to have glowing red eyes. No one has ever photographed one.
