Apologies if this has been raised elsewhere, but traffic obviously precludes searching at the moment and most of the threads on the topic are too voluminous to browse manually.

Someone else mentioned in another thread that the parachutist was carrying a photo of Desmond for identification purposes. The natural assumption is that she was despatched by Penny in order to find and retrieve him. This got the rusty cogs churning in my brain, and what they produced was this; what if the parachutist was sent, not by Penny to get Desmond out, but by Charles Widmore to take Desmond out? We know he has limitless resources and is perfectly willing to go to extremes in order to keep Desmond away from his daughter. An enterprise of the type we presume Penny to have been engaged in would be difficult to conceal, particularly since she was presumably utilising her father's contacts and wealth in pursuing it. Perhaps Daddy Widmore got wind of the situation and has decided to put a stop to it.

I absolutely agree this could be what is really going on. I posted a line or two to this possibility in a thread that has since been buried. But that thread was about something else.

It would be Desmonds luck wouldn't it... he goes thru all this crap in life to get to this destiny place and can see the future and all... only to have it all dashed away by Mr. Widmore.

Well that would explain the gun that we see Hurley with in the previews. You have to assume that the gun came from the girl as they are still sitting there where they found her.

as far as I know this would not be a true spoiler but just in case...

well one thing is for sure...whatever is the most likely, aint it! Thats my motto when it comes to Lost so I am not entirely supportive of the idea that this woman fell from the sky because of Penny. I like your alternative idea.

I agree. I don't think she is really from Penny. I thought she might have been an Other that we haven't seen yet. They could have gone in the hatch, perhaps during a lockdown (not sure if the logistics add up on this or not) and made a copy of the picture. It just seems weird to me that Penny would only have one picture of Desmond. If they did date for 2 years wouldn't there be more. Moreover, if you were sending people out looking for him, wouldn't it have been a good idea to give them some more pictures?

I never thought of daddy Widmore could be behind this...but it does make some sense. I think that would be definitely better than her being one of Desmond's ex's people. More interesting of a story...that to me would mean that Desmond is of more importance to Mr.Widmore than just some guy he doesn't want around his daughter.

Great thread!

The gun in the preview looked like a flare gun to me...so that wouldn't tell us much.

This is an interesting idea though, hadn't thought of it.

Okay.

Charles Widmore sent an assassin to a remote island per helicopter just so she could kill the guy who was in love with his daughter and who spent the last three years of his life trapped on that island.

Man, that Charles Widmore must REALLY hate Desmond.

That, or Desmond is way more significant to him than Penny's ex. I personally don't think it's out of Widmore's dislike for Desmond. I think it's more. I don't know what more means though right now. :)

 Nevermore, that's hysterical!

Plus keep in mind that Desmond's flashes predicted someone coming in relationship to him being with Penny again...signs point to Penny Rescue Squad!

Still, there is merit to the "don't trust the obvious" thinking on this show. I guess we'll see.

One thing is for sure:

It will definitely be ambiguous whether or not we should trust Naomi.

I think that she (the parachutist) is related to Penny's rescue team because the men in the artic station were speaking portugese and the parachutist had a copy of Catch-22 in her backpack and it was in portugese.

Very good point but strangely nobody has already made it.

If by "nobody" you mean "lots of people", you're right.

Been reading this board for nearly an hour and saw no reference to it prior to this. But thenmaybe I'm not as anal as some here.

I read somewhere that
Naomi is part of a dharma hit squad

could dharma still be completely involved, could she be there to take out des. not for widmore but for dharma, Des's ability will help the losties get rescued, and dahrma need them to take out the Hostiles, and they can't do this if they are off the island. Could she be there to take out Ben or Jacob.

That's rather convoluted. Why not just send 30-40 heavily-armed Dharma mercenaries in to wipe out the Hostiles. Why have faith that a few bedraggled Losties could take on the Hostiles and win?
