This is a group dedicated to discussing possible connections between Lost and the Grateful Dead. Anyone may join; there are no limits on what may be discussed, other than those that the Fuselage itself has. Drop in and find out why the compass always points to Terrapin/The Island...

This week on the ABC Lost home page they are featuring one of the writer's of Lost music and books that they feel inspire them to write. We're not told who this writer is, unfortunately (it would be cool to see which episodes this person wrote and them compare them to stuff). At any rate, one of the writer's favorite songs (listed third down from the top) is "Ripple" by the Dead. Interesting, very interesting!

So here's a site (http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/ripple.html) that gets into the very complex song.Does anyone see any connections between Ripple and Lost?

Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbYmGEIayD8)a little video of someone (I'm not sure who it is - possibly Hunter?) showing how to play Ripple on a guitar. There's no big secrets revealed here, but you can hear the tune to the song - more or less...

Hey Saukkomies.

Just wanted to mention the first occurrence of a Grateful Dead reference in the show of which I am aware. I thought that might be a good way to get started. Back in Season 1 Boone was shown wearing an Aces and Eights shirt. I believe those shirts are marketed as Grateful Dead memorabilia related to Loser. As I'm sure you are all aware, aces and eights are the "Dead Man's Hand."

...And I guess Boone was ultimately a "Loser"?? Well spotted shootfire!! Cant help bringing up a few more song titles... Lyrics are strangely appropriate too.. Check out "Cassidy" and "Cosmic Charlie", also I read the lyrics to "Brother Esau" and had flashes of "Brother Yemi"!! This song gave me chills!!

I thought I'd take the liberty of including links to those songs. You're right - that Brother Esau is a trip!

Cassidy (http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/cassidy.html)

Cosmic Charlie (http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/cosmic.html)

Brother Esau (http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/esau.html)

As a side note, that site The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics (http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/) is really cool, because they give you a lot of little bits of information about things in the songs.

I wonder if that might also be a link to the HBO series Deadwood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadwood_%28TV_series%29)? Both shows started the same year, and Liz Sarnoff (http://lostpedia.com/wiki/Liz_Sarnoff) is a writer for both. But she didn't start writing Lost episodes until season two, after Boone was dead. She wrote a flashback that had Boone in it in epi 02x06 "Abandoned", but I checked out the screencaps (http://gallery.lost-media.com/thumbnails-775.html) for that episode, but I didn't see Boone wearing the shirt you descibed.

Do you recall which episode it was?

Anyway, the obvious connection to Deadwood is the "Dead Man's Hand", as that was the hand that Wild Bill Hickock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_Bill_Hickok) was holding when he was shot and killed in a saloon in Deadwood. This scene occurs in the series' first year.

Howdy Folks,

I must say I'm feeling like a bit of "Loser" this morning, having missed all of the aforementioned Dead (and "Deadwood"!) connections! But then, that's what this chat group is for, right?!

It's pretty cool to see "Ripple" listed as one of the writers' influences. Thx for that link too, Saukkomies. Very interesting to see such an eclectic mix of tastes. It's such a great Hunter tune, and one of my favorites to play on acoustic guitar. It has a nice, moderate 4/4 tempo and a simple chord progression that allows you to settle into this great folky groove right from the start. Beautiful lyrics, and it's just downright fun to play too.

Nice catch on the Brother Esau lyrics too, COS. I definitely see some Eko/Yemi parallels there.

Yeah, wish they told us who's song it was a favorite of... We could then examine the episodes that were written by that writer to dig for hidden connections with "Ripple" or other Dead tunes.

So, were stacking up a bit of a list here of songs with possible Dead connections. Maybe we could brainstorm and see how many we could come up with. If anyone has an idea, just list the song and then give an explanation about why you think it has a connection to Lost. Then we can compile the list and talk about it...

I thought I saw a t-shirt that was a nod to Grateful Dead...but otherwise, I've missed all this. Duh! Now I'll have to consciously search my gray matter for GD lyrics. Loser is one of my all time favorites.

Loser is awesome! I'm sure that now we're looking for them, if any connections appear in upcoming episodes, we'll be sure to spot them!
