This would mean that there could be a HUGE consquence forthcoming that caused such a rift back then. I think that electromagnetic anomaly is the key here. Who knows what happened back then (besides JJ, Daniel and God), but perhaps an "imposion" happened and they had to devise a way to release because it goes through a cycle or something every 108 minutes. It's too vague right now to think about this further, so I'll leave that to someone else...
