We keep seeing flashbacks that show us how the Losties' lives are intertwined, but they don't know it.

Well, how come neither has mentioned this when they met onthe island? surely at least one of them remembers?

Jack and Desmond do remember each other. Their meeting was even alluded to in Catch-22.

I think there are a couple of reasons why the other characters don't talk about this with each other. 1) The crosses are often indirect. For example, Locke has met Sayid's girlfriend/soulmate Nadia. However, how would Locke and Sayid ever make a connection like that? Same with Kate meeting Sawyer's former girlfriend. The crosses are fun for the audience, but how on earth would our Losties know to make these connections?
And 2) for direct crosses, like Desmond running into Charlie on random London street, would you really remember a random crazy person that you saw for two minutes 5 years ago? I've been known to forget people I've met only a week prior.

When thy first entered the hatch, and Jack came face-to-face with Des, one of the two of them said "You!" as if they DID remember.

There was also that scene in Orientation, when Jack caught up with Desmond as he was running away from the hatch.

There is no doubt about it, they definitely remember each other. It's just between them though, they know that they ran into each other that night, so why talk about it? I mean it's a little odd that they both ended up on the same island, but I guess they have other priorities besides talking about that night.

I think that it is likely that Jack and Claire will find out the connection sooner rather than later. Ben knows too much and Jack and Aaron are too important to Ben to just let it go. Ben will use this a bargaining chip as some point soon.

Juliet has read Jack's file ("I know how his father died."); she likely also read Claire's file, given the blood tests and the kiddnapping. So Juliet knows, and Juliet is sitting in camp with Jack and Claire.

And, more importantly, she's alienating Jack from the other Losties.
I wonder how divulging that information will affect the situation?
Combine that with the bombshell that Sawyer's going to drop any time soon - i.e. the tape ......
