o.k. so the "definitive" answer as to why the plane crashed has been given. But why was 815 over the island in the first place? The pilot said that all of the instruments had malfunctioned long before the crash and that they were 1000 miles off course. What caused that? It wasn't the EM burst as that didn't happen until 815 coincidentally happened over the island. So what brought the plane to the island in the first place?

well some people are saying that Jacob wanted the plane therefore it came, I for one belive that the plane wasnt supposed to crash and that they(Others) were just going to get the people off that they wanted and then send it away again. When the plane crashed they had to go with plane B and stage a fake crash so people wouldnt come looking that way the 815s The first thing the Pilot asks is how long has it been and not where are we or how many people are alive. I think that the Pilot and Cindy were in on it to begin with. She is one of the few people that knew Locke was in a wheelchair.

They were heading for Fiji (emergency landing?) when they passed over the island and the EM burst fried the instruments (as in navigation) and caused it to crash.
As to what brought the plane to the island... that's being debated all over this board :D For my money, I think it was fate
