Wasn't able to find an existing thread on this topic, so here goes.

In the first season, when Walt is out in the jungle and is hiding from the others, we see him lying on the ground and the Others' legs go walking past. One of those pairs of legs belongs to a child who is carrying a teddy bear. Have we seen/heard anything that would suggest that the Others have children among them that are working alongside them?

This has really been bugging me as of late.

Thanks.

I believe that we did catch a glimpse of the children that they took from the tailsection. I think it was the episode where Juliet was on trial for shooting Picket? Someone will surely come along and correct me soon if I'm remembering wrong.

Walt wasn't hiding from the Others in the jungle. That was Michael. Walt was kidnapped by the Others in the season 1 finale.

Michael -> father
Walt -> son

Why do so many ppl get that wrong? It's not that hard to remember? :rolleyes: (Especially since Michael shouted Walt's name loud enough and often enough... "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalt!!!!!!!!!! !!!" )

The Others only came into play (visibly) at the end of the 1st season. The scene you describe above was from the 2nd season, ep 2x05 "... and Found".

The children we saw there, were the children kidnapped from the tailsection survivors and we saw them again, together with Cindy the air hostess in the 3rd season, ep 3x09 "Stranger in a Strange Land" at Jack's cage.

I understand the difference between Michael and Walt. It's been a while since I saw that episode...chill out.

So explain this. When we see the others walking through the jungle (i.e., just their legs going by), they are all dirty and ragged. We later learn that this is not their natural state, rather they apply stage makeup to appear that way to the survivors of 815 (sorry, but I hate the term Losties). Why would the Others take the children from the wreckage and then allow them to join in the ruse of applying the stage makeup and freaking out the remaining passengers? Seems a little strange to me.

When we do see the passengers that were taken, they are all clean and in nice clothing and tell Jack (I believe), who is in the cage, "We are here to watch." or something to that effect.

So that gives me one of two options. 1) The Other's have children who have been with them since before 815 crashed who we haven't yet seen since the set of legs walked by. -or- 2) The passengers that were initially taken from 815 have been in on the whole thing this entire time.

Personally, I started out leaning towards the first one. But now that I have written this, the second option seems just as likely.:undecide:

Well, then I guess the little girl from flight 815 lend her teddy bear to one of the Other's kids then, so the Other's kid could carry it past Michael and that Other's kid then later gave it back to the little Oceanic girl...

So what. Making an observation, without explaining how or why does not make you correct. I understand that this little girl had a teddy bear, however, unless that happens to be the only teddy bear ever made, then your above statement (no matter how sarcastic it was meant to be) means nothing. Last I checked, teddy bears were a mass produced item which, get this, means that more than one person could own one.

Now, you still fail to explain why this child (a supposedly innocent passenger stolen by the Others) is walking around with her captors, IN STAGE MAKEUP, TORMENTING THE VERY PEOPLE SHE ARRIVED ON THE ISLAND WITH!

Either the child was originally with the Others or she was a plant on flight 815. I don't see how it could possibly be explained any other way.
100%
Seriously?

Doesn't anybody else find this topic strange? I find it hard to believe that everyone here blindly accepts that these children are the ones captured from the plane despite the obvious holes in that logic.

If indeed, the children are the same as the ones that were initially kidnapped, then it begs the question of why are these "kidnapped" individuals working with/for the Others? That would mean that the "kidnappings" were staged and that a good portion of the people on the plane joined the Others or were "planted" on the plane so that they could later be kidnapped. It just doesn't make sense.

I thought that little girl with the teddy bear ( I think her name was Emma and she had a little brother) were in the tailsection group that crashed on the other side of the island wirh Ana Lucia, Mr. Eko, Libby, Bernard, etc. If she was, then she wouldnt know Jack, Kate and Sawyer and probably wouldnt have much empathy for them being in cages, especially if the Others told her that it was ok.

Yeah the girl with the teddy bear was in the tail section.
Technically her brother had the bear first but when Ana was working to get the girl to breathe and Eko decided to talk the boy away, the boy set the teddy down beside his sister.

I believe that the children that Michael saw were the children from the crash. These kids were just through a terrible trauma, and their parents either died on the flight, or are back in LA. Either way, these kids had no one to turn to. From what we have seen of them later on with Cindy, they are healthy, well-cared for children. The Others are being good to the kids. There would be no reason for the kids to not go along with the Others. After all, they have no idea about anything other than the fact that they were in a crash, these people came and took them away and gave them clothes, and food, and a bed, and safety. Makes perfect sense to me.

After dragging them away in the middle of the night. . . .

I don't know how the Others dealt with Emma and Zack between Night 12 (when they took the kids) and Day 48 (when they took Cindy). Maybe threatened the adult tailies, if they didn't tell the kids that these people were good people, and to obey them. Maybe left them in the care of people like Amanda (a grandmother-figure) or Klugh (a fear-figure; like she'd be with Walt later on). I think after Day 48, they were left in the care of Cindy, who the kids trusted (she'd helped care for them after the crash). They probably brainwashed Cindy, or at least conditioned her to accept the situation amicably. Make it "not that simple" to her (as she said to Jack, in SIASL).

Emma told Ana Lucia, right after the latter revived her, that her mommy was waiting for her and Zack at the (L.A.) airport. So they at least had a mom. Maybe dad, or grandparents, were in Australia, and they were returning from a visit?

The Others could have told the children that if they behaved, they would take them back to their parents. This would work with small children until the Others got Cindy and the kids got used to living there on the island. BTW, was it ever explained what Cindy meant by "we're here to watch"?

Am I the only one who immediately thinks Peter Pan when I see the scene of the Other's walking by and you see the kids' legs and the teddy bear? It's just like in Peter Pan with Wendy's youngest brother and his teddy bear that he always carried around.

I really agree with this, STH.

I think the bare feet belonged to Zack, and he was carrying his teddy bear. I believe what Eko/Jin/Michael witnessed in the jungle was the Tailies (including Zack and Emma) being groomed to become accustomed to the terrain.

I think initially Zack and Emma were placed into the care of Miss Klugh, Alex, and Karl, who oversaw their "reeducation." Later, Walt joined them.

Yes, I'm still clinging to the idea of Miss Klugh's Day Care. :biggrin: I believe this is why we saw Alex wearing that schoolgirl-esque uniform, in "The Glass Ballerina" and "I Do."

The Others probably used a much different (harsher) indoctrination process on the adult Tailies.

Once Cindy was kidnapped, The Others quickly forced her to assimilate, and threatened to kill Zack and Emma if Cindy refused to cooperate.

I can't get that moment out of my head, from TO48D, when Eko tells Zack and Emma to "stay with this nice lady," and ushers them into the protective arms of Cindy Chandler. Could this be foreshadowing for Cindy become Zack/Emma's caretaker, post-indoctrination?
