Ok, I thought I would start a thread about Lenny, Hurley's "retired" friend who gave him the numbers in the mental hospital. What a great character! Very mysterious. What did he mean by letting the numbers out of the box?

I would like to think that all ole Lenny meant by "you've opened the box" was an alagorical reference to the pandora's box. But... I also wonder if he means literally opened the/a box.

Well actually no, if it is a REAL box- I think it is something different, because Lenny said Hurley HAD opened it.

When Lenny said about opening the box my first thought was Pandora's Box. And I did associate it with the hatch. But maybe it is something all together different and another misdirection by the writers. Curious to see where they go with this. :-\

he is a very interesting character. i my be like totally wrong but i think what he meant was the numbers might of been like dead,(not been used) and he reffered to the numbersnot being used as like in a box. sorry thatreally doesn't make sense i have it in my head it is just really difficult to elxplain. sorry. i did my best.

No clue, my good NUMBER. I still haven't decided what I think the Hatch is/leads to.... so I can't say.

I think the box is the hatch. When Hurley opened it by using the numbers, that caused the bad things to happen, including the plane crashing on the island. Maybe the box/hatch is closed now until someone uses the numbers again.

That's an interesting theory. I would really believe it if we knew that the person before Lenny who had used the numbers had had something good happen to them. Or rather, NOT have something bad happen. (because they CLOSED the hatch) But then Lenny and doo-dad OPENED the hatch. Which would mean Hurley closed it, and that Lenny was wrong when he said he had opened it.

Yea but remember charlie the "good" thing that happend to the guy before Lenny (who name I think was Sam Toomey) was that he won that marble challenge or whatever it was when he guessed the right number at that carnival or fair. And Sam's wife said that things did happen to Sam and he believed that the numbers were cursed. And the only way he knew how to make it stop was to kill himself.

Hurley mentioned Lenny's name in Man of Science when he was telling Jack the numbers story. He called him Leonard. Will we see him again?

Ok, interesting scenario... Remember Lenny screaming to Hurley, "You've unleashed the box!" or something of that nature. Is he talking about the computer with the numbers? Remember, Locke called this computer a box. Is Lenny the person who Desmond took the place of in the hatch?

Thats what I think too. That's why he was scared that Hurley unleashed the "box" again. After looking at Adrift again, I realized that Desmond called the computer a box not Locke. So maybe that is the term they use to call it. If that's the case, Lenny could have been the one to do whatever Desmond does now.

And now we can speculate that the "box" Leonard referred to is a Skinner Box.

That is a definite possibility. It is obvious that the numbers cause enough problems and have enough power to make people go crazy. It seems very plausible that Lenny was in the same situation as Desmond and when crazy as a result.

I believe this too. I think we'll see more of Lenny as the story unfolds.

I have decided to bring this theory back into the forefront. Lenny has something to do with the island. He knew about the numbers and the box/computer. Did he escape from this island while he was in the navy and become crazy from the trauma of the island?

i thought that the older woman in australia told hurley that her deceased husband (whose name i forget) was in the navy/some military branch with lenny and that they heard the numbers while stationed in the pacific, on a radio transmission? or am i totally imagining that?

You are correct, but is that true? How does Lenny know about the box if this is the case? Is he psychic or did Lenny and that lady's husband actually find the island and become crazy from it?

that would be really interesting if lenny and sam toomey had gone to the island, but if they did, how did they escape? it seems that the island has the security system in place to prevent that sort of thing.

I don't know, but that would make for some interesting flashback stories!!! I'll certainly watch with excitement.

Good news Lenny fans!!!! Hurley is getting a flashback episode in 2 weeks called Dave. It is supposed to be about his days in the asylum. Guess what!!! We may just see some shots of Lenny. I hope we find out more about him and his box that has been unleashed.
