View Full Version : LOST Ate My Life! - Coming Fall 2008
hijinx 01-07-2008, 11:34 AM Have you ever been flipping through one of the bazillion guidebooks about LOST and wished that some REAL Lost fans would write about the show? Or better yet, about the Lost fandom?
Well guess what...that very thing is about to happen.
Coming in Fall 2008 - "Lost Ate My Life!"
Written by DocArzt and...me ;)
We're keeping the details kind of hush-hush at the moment, but you can come here to ask us questions, look for teasers, or just show us your support.
Let the madness begin...
myothercarisflight815 01-07-2008, 11:41 AM Madness indeed. LOST *did* eat my life. Erm... ok well maybe just my hobbies. I kept all of the important stuff.
Lost ate my life.. that is the most excellent and true title I've ever heard!
DocArzt 01-07-2008, 03:14 PM The title is definitely the cry of the masses, as well as our own sad admissions. :D
Laurenheartsyou 01-07-2008, 03:24 PM haha sounds great! good luck and i will definitely be reading this one! :jump1:
Southern Belle 01-07-2008, 03:37 PM Most excellent idea, you two!!

Sawyers Mojito 01-07-2008, 07:19 PM ack this is so true!! LOST ate my life i am so obsessed... and the Role Plays of Lost are even worse DX LOL consuming!!!
I will def be looking for a copy of this one
That will be so awesome :)
LostLaura 01-07-2008, 08:08 PM This is great, hijinx and Doc!
I known that you both have various contacts with the show. Will you have interviews, inside information, etc.? Or will it mostly be a fan's perspective and theories?
Btw, are you able to say who you have a publishing contract with? I'm a professional editor (though I wouldn't be able to publish this type of book), so I'm curious.
Good luck with the writing process!

Yes to the interviews. Yes to "fan perspective."

ECW Press - Same publisher of the Nikki Stafford "Finding Lost" books.
Good luck with the writing process!
Thankies!
Seriously, thanks to all of you for your support. Also, DrU - you already KNEW about the book, silly! Stop drinking all of Desmond's whiskey
LostLaura 01-07-2008, 08:53 PM Cool, thanks, H! I'm looking forward to it already!
DrUrbino 01-07-2008, 09:06 PM ... Also, DrU - you already KNEW about the book, silly! Stop drinking all of Desmond's whiskey
But I ran out of rum, what was I to do? :P Besides the more kudos the better, I always say. *hiccup* lol
goddessblue 01-07-2008, 10:41 PM This is so very cool! Good luck with everything!!
<---looking forward to reading it!
Michaud 01-08-2008, 08:28 AM Thanks guys!! What a great idea, and what a fantastic title!! So very apt.
I've just watched season inside of three days, so it may well provide some therapy for my condition ;)
Can't wait :Jumpy:
Petragrrl 01-08-2008, 11:20 AM Coolness!
Wishing you and DocArzt all the best, lots of inspiration and definitely no writer's block!! Looking forward to it!! :)
Cheers,

Tigermoth 01-08-2008, 01:27 PM This sounds great! Best wishes with everything, and I look forward to reading it!
gusthepolarbear 01-09-2008, 12:18 AM ooh, exciting!!!
hijinx 01-09-2008, 09:42 AM You guys are awesome. I knew I liked this place for some reason....
...besides the obvious "I have UMOD powers" perk
BOBBY 01-09-2008, 05:29 PM i might write a sequel to your blockbuster
lost ate my life, and my wallet !!
PhillyGirl2873 01-09-2008, 06:03 PM Great title Hijinx! Can't wait to read it.

Ha! Ha! Lost ate my life, and my wallet...but I made some awesome friends.
Gregg Nations 01-09-2008, 08:05 PM Congratulations! Great title, too. You guys are going to get a lot of sales based on that alone. Really looking forward to reading it. I'm really happy for you guys.
Loveeve 01-09-2008, 08:16 PM Here's some support.
Will you let others contribute every now and then? Sometimes EW has an Obsessive Fan of the Week pic/article in the Reader Mail. Maybe something like that?
Michaud 01-09-2008, 08:22 PM High praise indeed!
hijinx 01-10-2008, 02:40 PM Congratulations! Great title, too. You guys are going to get a lot of sales based on that alone. Really looking forward to reading it. I'm really happy for you guys.
Thanks, Ringer. Oh, and don't think you can sweet talk me into NOT revealing your bowling prowess somewhere within the pages of the book - the public needs to know THE TRUTH :eek2:
At the very least, you deserve partial credit for pushing me in this direction. I hope you will not be disappointed with the final product. And even if you are, you will have a whole book with which to mock me :undecide:
ETA: I forgot to add that the GENIUS title had already been picked by Doc before I came on board. Must give credit where credit is do ;)
BOBBY 01-10-2008, 03:15 PM Oi Jinx, whats goes on in lw stays in lw
:wink;
Ebdim9th 01-10-2008, 03:48 PM Jinxie-- I knowingly and willingly fed LOST great chunks of my life, with no regrets whatsoever *weg*
Majandra 01-13-2008, 06:23 AM I want an autographed copy when it's out!
Ebdim9th 01-13-2008, 09:41 AM Ooh, ooh, me too! Me too!! (riding Majandra's coat-tails...)
hijinx 01-13-2008, 11:21 AM I can't imagine why any of you would want my autograph - or Doc's for that matter - but if you see me at a convention or send it to me, I will definitely sign it. Then promptly die of embarrassment.
TabbyRasa 01-13-2008, 11:43 AM I can't imagine why any of you would want my autograph - or Doc's for that matter - but if you see me at a convention or send it to me, I will definitely sign it. Then promptly die of embarrassment.
Better get used to the idea before publication...
hijinx 01-13-2008, 12:04 PM Better get used to the idea before publication...
I am living quite happily in the Land of Denial, thankyouverymuch! :undecide:
This has all been a big learning experience. I don't like to talk about myself very much - or AT ALL - but I'll talk about LOST all day long, no problem. So, I had to fill out this "Author's Questionnaire" for the marketing department of the publisher - and it was excruciating for me. Writing the book is a cake walk compared to answering questions about myself *shivers*

You'll be fine...
It'll be pretty cool:cool: to have the insider info and interviews...something the other books about LOST probably are lacking...
Ebdim9th 01-14-2008, 12:49 AM ~~Hijinx, I had my head in the sand, didn't even know how much of a position you were in to write this kind of book, or a published, or to be published, author until I checked out this thread...

No worries :) I've been on my own little hiatus from the Fuse for awhile now and only recently started popping up again. I tend to do most of my modding on the LB, so regular TBers don't really know me unless they were around the first and second seasons
Hmmm...trying to decide if "didn't even know how much of a position you were in to write this kind of book" is a good thing or a bad thing
Ebdim9th 01-14-2008, 10:35 AM Oh, the LB is where I mostly know you from, anyway...
Michaud 01-14-2008, 01:08 PM I can't imagine why any of you would want my autograph - or Doc's for that matter - but if you see me at a convention or send it to me, I will definitely sign it. Then promptly die of embarrassment.

I think I'd feel the same as you, hijinx, being fairly reserved away from these boards. However, you've obviously struck a chord with the title of the book, and the obvious enthusiasm on this thread is really positive. I personally can't wait to read it and I hope that all the great messages carry you and Doc through to publication on a big wave.
Peace
M
Ebdim9th 01-14-2008, 01:12 PM Also, plan ahead. Start working on a follow-up as soon as you are able to ~~~~jinxy-luv...
Procrastination breeds inertia, or somethin' like that...
hijinx 01-14-2008, 08:24 PM @ Ebdim9th ~ That procrastination thing is a real (polar) bear -- throw on that LOST is returning in a couple of weeks and yeah...I'm feeling the pressure right about now to move things along a bit faster  Let's get THIS book out before you throw us on the next grill, mmmkay?
@ Tabby ~ I don't like the term "insider info" really. It makes it sound like we're doing an expose. A better description would be that I have a unique perspective of the LOST world, because of the people that I know both inside Lost Labs and on the boards. Same goes for Doc - and his connections are different from mine because he has been more active in the blogging and media parts of the LOST world. So even our fan perspectives come from different angles. Does that make sense?
@ Michaud ~ All of the support that we have gotten has been AMAZING. We only just announced it here, but this has been in the works since around the end of the Summer. The support from my friends and family has already been so great, but then to come here and read the excitement from the LOST fans here at the 'Lage - well, that is definitely a transcending moment. You guys rock.
jennylee27 01-15-2008, 11:58 AM Hijinx, I kept seeing your references to the book in the Leaggue, and I finally figured out what you are talking about! Congrats, I'm really excited to read it. I definitely felt that I wanted a book by a true fan when I was reading the other Lost references. Yay!
Ebdim9th 01-15-2008, 12:12 PM Hijinx-- yes, the leaggue of extraordinary Deadlines should keep you hopping, just make sure you keep a side collection of random ideas for later, make the next grilling easier, maybe?

I wasn't trying to blatantly advertise over there (well, except for the link in my sig - heh), but Gregg has been my number one cheerleader and is actually partially responsible for the circumstances that led to the collaboration between Doc and me.
Don't listen to him about the cabbage story though ~ no vegetables were harmed in the writing of this book
Hijinx-- yes, the leaggue of extraordinary Deadlines should keep you hopping, just make sure you keep a side collection of random ideas for later, make the next grilling easier, maybe?
Random ideas? How about random moleskines filled with ideas? ;) I promise you that I don't lack in the department of potential future endeavours, if I am so lucky as to be asked to write more.
Ebdim9th 01-15-2008, 01:31 PM That's all I was checking on, make sure you don't slip off the radar after your initial success. Because I believe I'm rightfully assuming you're about to have it, when this book comes out...
DrUrbino 01-16-2008, 09:00 PM Aha, I have a question. Can you give us a TEASER Jinxie or Dr.Arzt? For instance the name of the chapters or a brief synopsis of what the first chapter, for instance, contains?
...and I want an autographed copy too please! :)

Hmmmm...checking with my partner-in-crime to see what he thinks. Keep checking back ;)

One ride to the airport and you think I owe you, huh?

Random chapter titles (all of which are subject to change, since we are still in the process of writing - creative freedom and all that ;) ):
"The Hatch That Roared"
"Breaking Down the Wall"
"All Good Things..."
"Why We Need Lost"
How's that? :lipsseal:

Love those titles! My favorite is "The Hatch That Roared." I had the lead in The Mouse That Roared in HS. Reminds me of that.
Warne 01-17-2008, 12:28 PM Wonderful to finally see a book about the fandom of lost!
Will the book only consist of four chapters or was that just a few of them?
hijinx 01-17-2008, 01:56 PM Wonderful to finally see a book about the fandom of lost!

Oh goodness...MANY more chapters than four. Those were just "teasers" - in response to DrUrbino's request :)
Michaud 01-17-2008, 02:56 PM How's that? :lipsseal:
Thanks hijinx.
"Why We Need Lost"
The only thing that suddenly sprang to mind was a realisation that this particular chapter might become even more relevant when we (eventually) get to the end of season 6. Withdrawl symptoms are surely going to set in! :shock1: :fear3:
sjb121590 01-17-2008, 04:56 PM Wow... a book BY Lost fans FOR Lost fans? Sounds amazing. I'm a bibliophile, and I love this show, so I'll certainly be picking this book up.
So, is it going to just be about the show itself, or the fandom, or BOTH??? :eek2:
ETA: Wow. Looking at the first post answered my questions. I'll just shut up now. :angelnot:
((I can't help but think of all the Harry Potter books written by fansites.))

Right on Hijinx thats awesome.
"Breaking Down The Wall' and "The Hatch That Roared" sound very intriguing? I am curious what they are about... I don't remember anybody breaking any walls in Cali or did they? Any chance there wil be a chapter about things that sound like whoop? *g*
Thanks for the teaser. :)

Thanks for the teaser. :)
De nada.
Again, thank all of you for your overwhelming enthusiasm and support. I hope you will all be pleased with the results.
Ebdim9th 01-17-2008, 07:48 PM Hmmmm strobe lights. That wouldn't include sticks of dynamite or walking/dancing pigs would it? (or Nikki on a stripper pole...)
lostlocke 01-18-2008, 01:49 PM this is cool news, definitely sounds interesting. Why didn't I think to write a book?!!
whispervixen 01-21-2008, 07:05 AM That's brilliant, you two!! And love the title - so very, very true. ;)
Looking forward to reading it. :D

Yup. Doc and I both wanted him to do the cover art and our editor liked the idea. I've seen his initial piece and it ROCKS.
Sorry if I am not commenting as much at the moment. Our first draft deadline is quickly approaching, so Doc and I both are kind of on lockdown trying to get it done (while still working our regular jobs). But I do check the comments regularly. And you should see more (of me at least) come April :)
Thank ALL of you for your support!!

hijinx 01-25-2008, 03:08 PM tee hee! Although the Kyuss/Bobby wedding was classic.
You'll notice that pic is Carencey's. I was never around for the tutu antics. I did this crazy thing called SLEEP when all this was going on. I was there earlier in the evening, but then I crashed. But I had fun going through the pics again to grab this one. I realized that The Partyman has a number of pics of me that should maybe not be public :eek2:

hijinx 01-27-2008, 12:25 PM Wow, this week has been crazy. Whilst putting together questions and arranging a few interviews for the book, I got interviewed a couple of times myself! I have now had a small taste of what it is going to be like once we start promoting the book.
Hopefully, I will come off as intelligent rather than loony :)

Have you ever been flipping through one of the bazillion guidebooks about LOST and wished that some REAL Lost fans would write about the show? Or better yet, about the Lost fandom?

Coming in Fall 2008 - "Lost Ate My Life!"
Written by DocArzt and...me ;)
We're keeping the details kind of hush-hush at the moment, but you can come here to ask us questions, look for teasers, or just show us your support.
Let the madness begin...
CONGRATS to you both! This is fabulous. I wish you all the best, and I'll be sure to read the book when it's available. Will now subscribe to this thread so I can keep an eye on you guys! :)

Good grief you're quick! The writer hasn't even sent me the link yet!! And I swear I did NOT tell her I run The Fuse with Artie - I told her I was a moderator, but she really didn't understand how bulletin boards work. Hopefully, Karri won't kill me :eek2:
ame en peine 01-28-2008, 12:43 PM Hijinx - just wanted to say congratulations on the book, and on the article.. How exciting!
Don't fret about being misquoted.. My little hometown newspaper erroneously wrote that I was the owner of my boss' business. He promptly handed me all the bills. (You might want to travel with a fuselage org chart.. he he)
Lost Lenny 01-28-2008, 04:46 PM I buy every other LOST product...sign me up for this as well!
LOST fans are what makes this show so amazing.
Starrox 01-28-2008, 05:10 PM LOL! Did you see the comment to the article? *shakes head*
The one about Heroes? Yeah, but only once I saw your post and refreshed the page. And besides, I was too distracted by the picture of Bryan Burk and what looks like J.J. Abrams's ear... :24:
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? We're not watching LOST for the good-looking actors?? :24:
Yeah, I know, it's shocking, absolutely shocking!

Told you I don't miss many articles and interviews, I have too many Google News Alerts. ;) It took a while for me to get the email after the article was online - almost 8 hours if I converted the times correctly, actually...
(Well, and the fact I forgot to turn off my alarm last night and woke up at 8 am even though I didn't have to get up that early also had something to do with it. :wallbash:)
lostgurl 01-28-2008, 08:07 PM Oh sweet! How exciting...I can't wait to see it. Congrats to you both.
Kate731 02-02-2008, 09:54 PM Wow, I just heard about this- what a great idea, and congratulations guys!
I can't wait for the book to come out.
hijinx 02-04-2008, 09:36 PM Well, if LOST wasn't eating my life before I started this book, it is surely eating it now :pizza1: :coffee1: :popcorn-chair:
This has to be the first time that I wished the hiatus had been about two months longer! All of the new episodes and speculation are VERY VERY distracting

No worries - I figured that's what you meant :) I'm just really really REALLY careful with how the book is described. I'm excited by the interviews, too - they've been fun to do ;)

I hope you have been keeping a log of them...of when and where they may appear. ;)

Have you ever been flipping through one of the bazillion guidebooks about LOST and wished that some REAL Lost fans would write about the show?
You have no idea! I'm really looking forward to this book, good luck! :D Lost has certainly eaten my life too ;)
hijinx 02-09-2008, 09:42 PM If any of you are interested in this whole book writing process, I started a blog back in September - about the time we were offered the book deal. I have been making posts there periodically about my writing process, stuff we've had to deal with in the process of making it happen, how it all came about in the first place, etc.
You can find the link in my signature - the blog is called "Fandom Life" :)
Lost Lenny 02-09-2008, 10:44 PM Enjoyed reading Fandom Life very much. I too was spoiled by 4.04 and wish I was not but shame on me.
Speaking for myself, LOST can sometimes be like a drug...when the long layoff comes, after I have watched 3 seasons worth of DVD's again, I need my fix and look at a few spoilers...excitement builds and once I've taken that "hit", I feel better.
After reading them though, I feel ashamed at my weakness and wish I hadn't.
Sounds like someone with a substance problem huh?
I'm 42 years old and could count on one hand how many television shows I have considered "must see TV" and LOST tops that list. That makes my addiction even more strange to me.
Thanks for the heads-up on that link. Looking forward to the next post.
hijinx 02-11-2008, 08:07 PM You know, one of the main attractions for me in doing this book, besides the obvious desire to talk about LOST and the LOST fandom from the perspective of actual FANS, is to shine a light on those people with the show - who we refer to as VIPs on this board. There is a group of us who have been to the fans parties and have gotten to interact with the VIPs one-on-one, and walked away with some fabulous experiences and stories to tell - but we are such a small portion of the fandom.
Some of these people I'm interviewing are people that I have met in person and have been exchanging emails and phone calls with for - in some cases - YEARS. And yet, I'm getting some surprising answers to questions that I thought I knew the answers to. I mentioned in my blog that I interviewed Burky last week - the one person within the show who I have been in contact with the most often and for the longest amount of time (over 3 years now!). I'd like to think that I know him fairly well, and yet - some of his answers were still surprising to me. And I can't wait to share them with you all.
I have been to other LOST sites and I'm quickly reminded of how spoiled we have been here at the 'Lage. Yes, we do not have as many VIPs posting on the site as we did in the first season - but they still come here. And even though we've never really billed the fan parties as being exclusively for members of the Fuselage - we make up the bulk of the attendees. The VIPs have a soft spot for this place and the fans who come here. Damon calls us "the Faithful." If I do one thing right in this book, I hope I will show the rest of the LOST fandom how this amazing show comes from some truly amazing people.
Seriously - how many of the fans on other sites would believe that Damon Lindelof comes to the Fuselage often enough that he recognizes the names of "regulars" vs. "n00bs"? Not only that - he remembers who the trouble-makers are, too. I put that quote in my siggy not just because Damon mentioned me (along with Carencey) by name - but because it proves that he DOES come to the Fuse. And he comes often. How many other showrunners get THAT involved with the fandom of their shows?
Majandra 02-12-2008, 05:08 AM Just to add a little story that totally amazed me:
It was during my first year here at the Fuse, my first Christmas, when I decided to send out a couple of Christmas cards to my newly found Fuse friends and when I was done, I had a few cards left and decided to send them to some of our VIPs here, so one of them was sent to Javi. I never got any reply back from any of the VIPs but I didn't expect any and that was certainly not the reason why I had sent them. I just wanted to thank them for the joy and excitement they bring to my home every week and just genuinely wish them a happy Christmas.
Three months later, I happened to hang out at the LB when Javi came online and started to chat with us, so I waved hello at him. His first reply back was to thank me for the wonderful Christmas card and I was literally blown away. Not only did he (immediately) remember a card that was sent to him 3 months prior to that (sometimes I can't remember things I've done 3 minutes ago, so that alone is a sheer miracle for me! ;) ) but he also immediately connected my screenname to said card. (I had signed it with both my real name and my screenname)
Yup... I'm still amazed... and very thankful to be a part of the Fuselage. :)
goddessblue 02-12-2008, 12:22 PM Majandra, that's a wonderful story. And a perfect example of why this place is so cool. The creative team and the fans interacting. Really, there's no site like the 'lage.
Michaud 02-12-2008, 12:27 PM Majandra - A great story!
Yup... I'm still amazed... and very thankful to be a part of the Fuselage. :)
You and gb are spot on, and it just goes to back up what hijinx said earlier. It makes you feel warm inside, as a poster here, to know that the VIPs are the down-to-earth people that they appear to be. :)
You can find the link in my signature - the blog is called "Fandom Life" :)
This is great! I'll be following it  Thanks again for making this book.

Damon, Burky, Javi, JJ, etc. are so down to earth because they remember what it is like to be US. To them, it wasn't very long ago that THEY were on our side of the fence - they remember what it is like to be a fan, mainly because they are still fanboys at heart. I can honestly say that they don't have a pretentious bone in their collective bodies.
This is great! I'll be following it  Thanks again for making this book.
Awww..shucks  I hope we do the fandom proud.

Great story! I've met Javi in person twice and he really is genuine and remembers everyone's names. It is really cool to see how much he remembers us all. I'm especially amazed beacuse I'm horrible at remembering people's names.
Majandra 02-12-2008, 03:38 PM Philly, I'm the same... I'm crap with names or just generally remember stuff. Quite awful, really. :(
I think I was more shocked about that fact that a person can remember things like that than the OMGIMTALKINGTOAVIP shock. :71:
Sam G 02-12-2008, 06:43 PM At both the DHARMA Drops, when I delivered the support notes from the fans here, Gregg would say how much the writers loved reading them.
In the "Pencils Down" thread Starrox posted an interview with Javi. It's pretty amazing how the internet has connected the writers with the fans.

It is so clear that TPTB are all fanboys, if they weren't we wouldn't have Hurley.

I interviewed both Gregg and Javi for the book as well - actually, Javi is doing the foreward. Both are fantastic and have been HUGELY supportive of this whole endeavour. Like I said - I knew before how much these guys cared about the fans - but now I get to share that with the fans who DON'T know. It's very cool
Michaud 02-12-2008, 08:13 PM The success of that internet-television link, Sam, is I think due to what hijinx, Philly and Majandar have just described. It's a circle - we see the fanboys in them, and they see the fanboys/girls watching the show and develop relevant responses (the ARGs, for example) that they know we're going to go mad for. It almost fuels itself, although of course the product, the show, has to be outstanding. Which it is. :)
Sam G 02-12-2008, 08:21 PM It has worked really well for the writers. It puts them on a personal level with their fans. They have faces and in the beginning they were just like us. In many ways they are still like us, they have blogs and share their personal experiences with us and we feel linked.

Exactly why I love the Fuselage so much, Sam. Awesome stories Majandra and hijinx! I love Javi! Does anyone think he may return for an episode sometime before the end?

Highly doubtful. Not for any nefarious reasons, but mainly because his pilot just got picked up. He's got his own show to run now
UnsungHero108 03-09-2008, 11:03 PM LOST *did* eat my life. Erm... ok well maybe just my hobbies. I kept all of the important stuff.

Doc and I are barrelling towards the home stretch right now - at least in terms of the writing of the book. Our first draft is due in three weeks, so I am in a kind of "lockdown" until the draft is finished. Once it's done, I should be back here with some more teasers and tidbits to tickle your curiosities.
Sound good?
Ebdim9th 03-10-2008, 06:34 PM Yes indeedy. Dont forget to hypothesise a meeting between DocArtz and Dr.Urbino, if it hasn't occured already...
Carn_Helving 03-17-2008, 12:30 PM Hahahah, I like the title…..very true!! My life used to be consumed by Lost,….but less now. I remember traveling for 4 hours (there and back) to get an Apollo bar, lol.
The book sounds good….I’ll defiantly buy it when it comes out.
hijinx 04-21-2008, 10:37 AM So I have been completely neglectful of this thread, but NO MORE!! The first draft has been turned in to our editor - FINALLY - so the bulk of the writing is D-O-N-E!!!
:jump::clapping::w00t::groove::woohoo:
We will be adding some stuff from Season 4, once the season is complete, but I'd say the written portion of the book is 95% done. It is a HUGE, HUGE relief.
Just wanted to bump this up and let y'all know that I'll be around more often if anyone has questions. I'll answer what I can ;) Also, I will be blogging more regularly in my book blog "Fandom Life" - link is in my siggy.
Check back for updates!!

sjb121590 04-21-2008, 10:52 AM Yes! That is so cool, hijinx. I cannot believe you actually are getting a book published. I'm jelous! I'll make sure to read your blog to see how the whole process is going. Sounds really interesting!

Congrats again Hijinx on finishing (95% at least) the final draft.
*High five*
So from start it finish, how long did it take?
How many drafts did you do?
How long did it take to complete each one?
How did you and Dr Arzt co-write the book? I mean, did you each do certain chapters?
ETA: I know I could just ask you this on yim, however these might be some questions your other fans are interested in as well. ;)
hijinx 04-26-2008, 05:03 PM Leave it to DrU to pepper me with a mountain of questions ;) Kidding, Bruce. You know I love it!!

Okay first off, you misread my post - we just turned in our FIRST draft. There will be many more edits to come, I am sure. So that affects the answers below, just fyi :)
So from start it finish, how long did it take?
That is a tricky question. We got the book deal back in September, so ever since then there has been some kind of work being done on the book. But the actual sitting down and writing the book on a regular basis started for me right after the first of the year. So for the better part of three months I spent the majority of my lunch hours at work (yes, I still have a regular day job) and my time at home on the nights and weekends working on the book.
How many drafts did you do?
Again, it is just the first draft that is done. According to the timeline we got from our editor, there will be at least four or five drafts based on which department each draft goes to and whatever changes and additions we have to make.
How long did it take to complete each one?
I don't know how long our drafts will take, but it seems that each stage can take up to a month to complete. This will be something I will be able to answer more fully when we are at the point of publication.
How did you and Dr Arzt co-write the book? I mean, did you each do certain chapters?
Very good question - how did we do that?? ;) I'm not sure how other co-writers handle things, but this is how Doc and I did it:
First off, Doc had already come up with a list of themes/topics he wanted to cover in the book - he was the one who was approached initially. He did not think he had enough material on his own to manage a book of the size that the person who approached him was looking for. He asked if I would be interested in a collaboration, and I said sure. If it had been someone in a similar position as I am, I may have been hesitant. But Doc and I actually are esconced in different parts of the LOST fandom - some of our connections and online haunts overlap, but for the most part we have had definitively different experiences in the fandom. I knew that I could contribute different stuff - and that is what made me agree to the collaboration.
Doc sent me his initial list of themes/topics and I added to it. The lady who initially approached Doc (who also happens to now be our editor) asked us to draw up a sample Table of Contents listing each chapter and a one or two sentence breakdown of what each chapter would contain. Using Google Docs (an awesome invent btw) and many IM sessions, we constructed a sample TOC and sent it. We also had to come up with a 2-3 page proposal that gave a synopsis of the book and brief background info on Doc and me, thus explaining why we are the best people to write this kind of book. We sent the TOC and proposal to our editor and she presented it to the publisher she works for. We were also told to work on a sample chapter, in case the publisher asked for one. It wasn't needed. We were made an offer less than a week after turning in the TOC and proposal
Next, I took our TOC and split the chapters up. This is a 50/50 deal, so I wanted to make sure we had an even workload. I went through and designated solo chapters first, starting with the chapters that I thought I could write on my own. Then went through the list again and marked the chapters I thought I could contribute to, but maybe not enough for a full chapter - those became the combo chapters (one's we co-wrote). The remaining chapters were marked as solo chapters for Doc. I think the initial split was 6 solo chapters for me, 7 for Doc and 8 combos. The final tally deviated, due to me taking on a couple more while Doc was swamped with other things.
With the 8 combo chapters, I split them in half: I would start 4 and Jon would start 4, then we'd email them to the other writer when we were done with our half - and they would add to it. It was pretty easy to do them. Doc and I have a similar mindset and a close enough writing style that I think it will be fairly difficult to tell who wrote what - especially in the combo chapters.
So there ya go. Hopefully that was helpful to you all. I think I may repost this in my blog, since a lot of this is stuff others my ask or want to know about as well.

*Adjusts his "scoop" fedora hat and licks the tip of his pen*
Who me? .... and I have a few more too, lol. It seems like a really impressive turn around especially working another job full time. Is that normal for this type of project and if not is there a specific reason for having it done so quickly? What is the deadline date for the final draft? (yeah, I misread, lol, sorry)... Has your Editor or Publisher talked about promotion yet, as far as a book signing tour or convention appearances, things of that nature? Also are you allowed to tell us if any people from Lost have been interviewed for the book and who all will be included?

I don't know if it is normal or not. It's normal for me to be doing multiple projects at once  Non-fiction is different than fiction though. Usually a fiction story has to be complete (at least with your first one) before you start sending it around to potential publishers. So the time frames definitely vary.
What is the deadline date for the final draft? (yeah, I misread, lol, sorry)...Because we are so close to the end of Season 4, and we'd like to include S4 stuff, we have a secondary deadline after the S4 Finale airs - probably around the end of the first week of June. That will be the last draft to include actual new sections. There will be a few more drafts after that for grammar/typos and layout stuff - but we won't be able to add any more "content" after that June deadline.
Has your Editor or Publisher talked about promotion yet, as far as a book signing tour or convention appearances, things of that nature? We are supposed to have a conference call with the marketing people fairly soon, but it hasn't happened yet. This is an independent press and the book has a pretty specific audience, so it is not the kind of book that we would actually do a "book tour" for. We will be doing interviews and there are a couple of conventions that I have plans to go to this year - on my own dime - where I may be in some LOST panels and I will be bringing book announcement postcards to pass around. If there are any events or conventions near where we live that the marketing people think we should be at, then I think that will be arranged. But really the bulk of the marketing will be done online by Doc and I. Anything outside of that, like I said, we haven't really discussed yet. When we do, I'll let you know.
Also are you allowed to tell us if any people from Lost have been interviewed for the book and who all will be included?I don't see any reason why we can't tell you who was interviewed. List is below:
Bryan Burk
Javier Grillo-Marxuach
Gregg Nations
William Mapother
Damon Lindelof
Carlton Cuse
Josh Holloway
Jorge Garcia
Michael Emerson
Michael Ausiello
Kristin Dos Santos (formerly Veitch)Some of those interviews were not JUST for the book - they were interviews conducted by Doc for his LOST blogs, but some of the stuff discussed will be in the book and not found elsewhere. The interviews I did were pretty much exclusively for the book.

Doc interviewed Josh, Jorge and Michael Emerson when he took a trip to Hawaii to visit the set. The bulk of those interviews were posted on BuddyTV and Doc's blog (I think), but there is additional stuff that is going to appear in the book.
olafandyjon 04-29-2008, 11:13 AM Yeah...figures...I ask the same question about who interviewed whom on your blog. I guess all I had to do was come here in the first place!
hijinx 04-29-2008, 03:54 PM Yeah...figures...I ask the same question about who interviewed whom on your blog. I guess all I had to do was come here in the first place!
Actually, DrU asked only about Jorge and Josh. I answered your question over on the FL blog :P
myothercarisflight815 04-29-2008, 04:15 PM Next, I took our TOC and split the chapters up.
I had to read that little sentence about five times. I knew good and well what you were talking about... but my brain kept seeing "TOQ"..."TOQ"... "TOQ." I would just read the sentence over and over. Visualizing you & TOQ at the kitchen table dividing up the TOC between the two of you. Over coffee, of course.
I know I'm tired... but LOST nibbles at my life.
Bella 04-30-2008, 01:38 AM LOST nibbles at my life.
Your username should totally be a bumper sticker.
LOVE IT.
And can't wait for the book!!!!
hijinx 04-30-2008, 09:51 PM See that? I made promises to be around more, then promptly disappear again ;)
Actually, we already got our 1st draft back from the editor, so now Doc and I have a little over a month to implement her changes and make our S4 additions. I will still be checking the thread as much as I possibly can, so feel free to ask more questions. Otherwise...busy, busy, busy with that writing thang

Ebdim9th 05-24-2008, 08:09 PM For some reason I thought Jim of the LOST Boys comix contributed some artwork to the proceedings?
hijinx 05-24-2008, 08:34 PM No. Just Grant. Though he is mortified that they used his rough draft of the cover for the image on Amazon. He actually hasn't done the final cover yet. When he does, I'll post a link here so you guys can see it.
Also, I plan to post some sneak peeks here as well, to keep the buzz going until the actual release date - which is November 1st. I'll also post information here regarding various interviews and appearances, when all that kind of stuff rolls around.
One thing I can say now is that both Grant Gould and I are planning to be at San Diego Comic Con this year - and it looks like Doc might be there as well. Grant will have a table in the dealers' room, but Doc and I probably won't. We WILL have book announcement cards that we'll be passing around, so keep an eye out for us if you are going to be attending as well

Sam G 05-25-2008, 01:19 AM Hijinx,
Make yourselves some t-shirts when you go to Comic-con. I have several friends that have taken their films to Sundance and they had to do their own PR and pass out cards for their screenings. T-shirts seems to make it easier for some reason.

That is actually an excellent idea - thanks Sam! I'm going to see what we can come up with before the con. I feel like I have a million things to do before I get there...probably because I DO have a million things to do :eek2:
We turned in the 2nd draft earlier this week - which was a HUGE relief. I have a couple of more things that need to be turned in as well, but then I will have a little time to "relax" (which just means I'll be doing stuff that is not book-related).
Maybe I'll figure out something to tease y'all with...
Sam G 06-06-2008, 11:40 AM Hijinx
I make t-shirts for all the plays I stage manage, so easy with Avery t-shirt transfers (http://www.avery.com/us/Main?action=product.HierarchyList&node=10211041&catalogcode=WEB01) Since you aren't making 100's and just a few, I'd use the artwork for your book cover, kind of like your Avatar. All you have to have is a color printer and the ability to print a mirror image and you iron them on your light color t-shirt. (They have ones for dark t-shirts too - those you don't have to reverse.)
They come out great.

Also, you can buy cheap cotton T-shirts at many craft stores for about $5 each. I've used these before to make t-shirts for my 3-Day walks. Very easy to do.
I'm not sure what other kinds of promotion you're looking for, but many people like free give-aways at cons. Cheap little buttons or bookmarks may be a good idea as giveaways, but I have no idea what kind of budget you are looking at or what it may cost to make them.
hijinx 06-06-2008, 01:07 PM I love this. It's like I've got my own little marketing department at The Fuse
I'm going to look into some of these things this weekend and see what I can feasibly do. Thank you guys for ALL your suggestions - this is just awesome!

I love the idea of the buttons!! The probably wouldn't have to be huge either..just colorful. Book title, a bit of art and release date...
Your very own swag....
katesnemesis 06-09-2008, 07:25 PM I am really looking forward to this book because I started watching "Lost" seasons 1 & 2 on dvd in 2006 which is when my addiction started. I may be the oldest person here but I just found out about all these boards when I started watching season 4 on abc.com. All this to say, I can really relate to the title.
Sam G 06-09-2008, 07:28 PM Welcome Katesnemesis

lostfan9 06-21-2008, 10:17 PM If this is a success, will you and DocArzt write a sequel to be published after the series finale - a kind of guide to withdrawal from The Fuselage, fan boards, and the realization that there will be no new episodes.
Ebdim9th 06-22-2008, 03:41 AM Some fan boards for shows like Buffy are still active, so you might not suffer from total withdrawal when LOST is done...
The show Dead Like Me still has some loyal boards that wound up generating enough interest in a movie for it.
Sometimes you just gotta find that band of fellow loyalists and stick with 'em...

Ebdim9th 06-22-2008, 07:58 PM It'll never happen. LOST is now legend, and so is the 'Lage...
katesnemesis 06-23-2008, 03:36 PM I, too, have been thinking about the series finale of "Lost". I am so addicted that I think I will suffer withdrawals. But, like has already been mentioned, there will be boards for fans like me who will rewatch over and over.
Loveeve 06-25-2008, 10:13 PM I so hope your are right katesnemesis. I'm holding out on buying the dvds until the finale. It's got to end well for me to hand over that kind of cash.
Ebdim9th 06-28-2008, 08:19 PM I believe, I believe... that LOST will end well, and all will be well, and all manner of things shall be well...

LostisGenius 08-27-2008, 02:57 AM As usual I am right on top of things, lol, I just found this thread! I cannot wait to read that book, LOST has totally taken over my life, I heard SCI-FI channel was starting re-runs of Lost in September and I was giggling like a school girl seeing her first crush! I watched an older movie today 'BLIND FURY' w/Terrance O'Quinn and writing down clues from that movie that would apply to LOST. It is a never ending curse of trying to carry on a conversation without saying ' I know who's the coffin' that doesn't go over too well with a potential employer:biggrin: I know the book will be a best seller! Any signed copies out there?
LostApril 09-20-2008, 01:19 PM congrats to you both!!

i am so excited!!!
DrUrbino 10-04-2008, 02:03 AM Hiya Hijinx,
So the ads for your book still seem to have that same crappy artwork that you said was going to be redone? Is it going to be changed, I will still buy it for sure. But just trying to be helpful for those who won't, if they don't know and like you. :)
hijinx 10-17-2008, 08:14 PM Hey guys! Sorry for the long absence from this thread, but you should be seeing more of me since...
THE BOOK IS SHIPPING NOW FROM AMAZON!!!
Yes! Two weeks early! Amazon now shows the book as being "In Stock" - so if you order it from Amazon you will get it pretty quick. Otherwise, it should be hitting the shelves of your local Borders and Barnes & Nobles on November 1st.
You can leave questions and such for me (and Doc, too) here, but I am trying to direct as many people as possible to leave reviews over on my blog - Fandom Life.
THIS LINK (http://amyjjohnston.blogspot.com/2008/10/lost-ate-my-life-reviews.html) will take you directly to the entry to leave your reviews at.
Can't wait to hear what everyone thinks!!!

It came yesterday. Congrats Amy - it looks excellent.
The "in memory of" is heartwarming. Thanks for doing that. I know friends of STH and Lisa will be so touched (and Joe's too, although I don't know him myself).
LostLaura 10-24-2008, 12:11 AM I can't buy things right now. I think I'll borrow Jenny's when she's done! I am so excited to read it!
jennylee27 10-24-2008, 10:54 AM Yeah, of course! I read a few chapters last night, cracked up at the reminder of when Gregg let us know that Foilergate was occuring. Ah, good times.
I got the book today at 4pm, now it's 7pm and I've read through the first 10 chapters.... It's SOOOO GOOD!!!! I'm having great big chuckles at every few lines, and I recognize so many fun things from the lage and everyone here... Just makes me sad that I haven't had the chance to go to any of the fan parties yet...
hijinx 10-24-2008, 02:01 PM Awww...y'all are making me feel all warm and fuzzy :) I'm glad everyone seems to be enjoying it so far. And Myha...I am eagerly waiting to hear what you (and Majandra and all the other Mods) think about the Shipper Wars chapter. It was by far my favorite to write
Actually I'm looking so much forward to reading that chapter that I had to stop myself and save it for a minute or two so that I could come here and say how much I'm enjoying it so far! :24:
I'm loving the foreword by Javi, the chapter on the fuselage, the Burky story and just all these little tidbits about people and places that I know and love!

I am SO jealous - I saw you online this morning on the same thread I was browsing but shot off without leaving a hello to see where the heck my pre-ordered copy was at.
Amazon have it *squee* sort of. lol - they say I can expect it Nov 4th. I just finished Slaughterhouse 5 and a time twisting Stephen Fry and NEED a new read. Ah well, I shall make the best of my situation by enjoying the anticipation a while longer.
Congrats to you hijinx (do we have a congratulatory smiley? I can't find it if we do) I look forward to Shipper Wars with particular interest as the shipping phenomana was alien to me before I landed at the 'lage. I shall enjoy your perspective I've no doubt.

They are so getting coal in their stockings.

I know this is a bit silly, but honestly...I haven't asked. I kind of like being blissfully unaware at this point. It's like - if I ask and find out that a lot of books have been sold, then I will get my hopes up that it will continue to be that way. But if I find out that the book isn't selling well, then I'll be crushed. So I live in my happy state of not-knowing. For now at least. I believe I will be given some kind of tally at the end of the year. I will say that I get excited every time I find out that someone I don't know has bought the book :)

Awww, thanks dear!
I have done a couple of interviews recently that just got put online this week and I wanted to share the links here with you guys.
The first one was by Jopinionated - she interviewed Doc and I both. You can read it here:

I was also interviewed by Michael Pinto at fanboy.com. You can read that interview here:

Thanks to the confused brain of my twin, I am now proud owner of my own copy of your book! (My twin ordered the book twice :71: Maybe it's a twin thing... you just need to have everything twice? *ducks and runs from twin*)
I haven't finished reading it and I'm kinda bouncing from chapter to chapter rather than reading the whole thing front to back but OMG I LOVED the Shipper Wars chapter. Absolutely brilliant!!! So many "OMG I remember that" moments!!"
And I loved that many times you described situations or people (not only in the Shipper Wars chapter, this is true for the whole book) and you didn't name them by name but I knew immediately who you meant. For example when you described that even people from "other countries like Ireland, Wales and Germany" came to fan parties.
Dear hijinx, I want to thank you for writing this book about the best friends I've ever made online and it will always remind me of these friends and the good (and sometimes bad ;) ) times we had together, even in years to come, after the end of Lost, after we all will have moved on to different places (hopefully we'll still keep in contact tho!).
 THANK YOU !!!! :give_rose:

Totally makes sense. They probably won't tell you unless you ask. Otherwise, I'm not sure if they'll tell you at year end. Most likely you will just see the amount reflecting on your royalty payment statement next year. My company issues statements in April, but it'll be stated in your book contract as to when your payment is.
I hope it sells well!!

All of you who have read it need to post your reviews there! I'm loooooooving the book, and I feel lucky for having been here through almost the whole time this site has existed. I missed the first 6 months or so... Since May 2005 I've visited this site almost daily, and I'm still not tired of the site or the people here! This site has been wonderful for me, and I think Hijinx and Doc really have shown in the book how amazing and crazy but wonderful this fandom can be!! Thank you so much for writing this book! I'm loving every page!

Did you post it on http://www.shelfari.com?
Did you post it on http://www.shelfari.com?
Oooo smart! I didn't, but I certainly will! Great idea!
hijinx 11-21-2008, 03:56 PM We have gotten our first official review!! And she really liked the book!!
http://lost.about.com/od/bookreviews/gr/lostatemylife.htm
It's on About.com, and the reviewer says LAML "...is the best book about Lost I have ever read..."
:clap::clapping::Jumpy:
*squeee* I agree with her! I want a sequel too!!!!! Congratulations again!!!!!:clap::clap:
PhillyGirl2873 11-22-2008, 02:10 AM Sweet! That's an awesome review. And the cons weren't too critical either.
Petragrrl 11-22-2008, 10:21 AM Hi Hijinx and Doc,
congratulations on a great book. I ordered mine through amazon.com last week and had it read within a day. Very entertaining! A sequel would be great! :)
Cheers,
P.
And just because I couldn't resist: I find typos in book reviews mentioning typos as cons rather ironic... (forward vs. foreword)
Liplocked 11-26-2008, 09:52 PM Yay! the review writers :clapping: Sadly you're still the closest I've come to reading the book itself *spoot* I'm currently being quoted Dec 4th for delivery of my pre-ordered copy.
LostLaura 12-02-2008, 11:18 AM I read the book on my Thanksgiving return drive. I really enjoyed it! Great job Hijinx.
Are you thinking of a 2nd edition after the series is over?
Sam G 12-02-2008, 12:47 PM I just got my copy and I'm really liking it.
bianconiglios 12-06-2008, 04:48 AM Great book! Just finished to read it! I "wish" every fan to read it!
dondant0511 12-08-2008, 11:39 PM [QUOTE=hijinx;2040592]Thanks for your kind words! And seriously, it was our absolute pleasure to write it. I'm just so glad that we had the opportunity to share our LOST fandom stories with the fans we knew would appreciate them the most :)
Um, just wanted to ask. How is my husband's and my story of how we met and got married, your story? Just wondering, cause we never gave the rights out.
Liplocked 12-09-2008, 07:22 PM Great book! Just finished to read it! I "wish" every fan to read it!
This fan's still waiting on Amazon: I heard from them (again) and they put my delivery back (again, again) to the 16th.
Now they write me of their difficulties processing my debit card... quoting the wrong expiry date when the details I see displayed in my account with them is perfectly correct!
I'm going to Waterstones.
Sam G 12-09-2008, 07:29 PM I've got my copy but I'm only reading a few pages at a time. I'm just at the Shipper Wars.
All the fan parties sounded like so much fun - life threw me a curve ball in 2005 or I would have been there.
too2strange 12-16-2008, 11:32 PM It was a great story. Sounds like you the perfect person to have broken the wall!
Any chance you can sign the book? Does your editor have a PO Box for you? Unless you are planning a book signing in Montana in the future... LOL! I had to order your book so I just got done reading it last week. It was an early Xmas present!
Thanks for all your hard work on the FUSE and keeping us fans informed! You rock!
LordXwee 12-29-2008, 04:45 PM I just got this book for Christmas and I love it. My friend had a spaz attack over it, she's a big Lostie too.
It made me come up and join here on The Fuselage.
Sam G 12-29-2008, 06:57 PM You joined just in time for season 5. Have fun and look around.
Bluedog1121 12-30-2008, 11:04 AM I was super excited to get this book for Xmas and can't wait to read it! :)
Sam G 12-30-2008, 07:01 PM Bluedog Welcome to the Fuselage.
Just in time for season 5
Bluedog1121 12-31-2008, 12:48 PM Thanks! I'm having tons of fun here.
Sam G 12-31-2008, 02:18 PM Bluedog I don't know how involved you are, there are lots of things in the spoiler section that you can't see unless you request it.
I read this book on the airport as my plane was delayed 12 hours!
I wanna thank the authors as they made the 12 hours run along a lot faster! =)
also it introduced me to this fabulous LOST forum!
(which I was only aware about when I dove into the fandom after the first season.)
I had no idea that it broke the wall between the LOST creators and the fans!
Great book! Great site!
Bluedog1121 01-01-2009, 01:02 PM Hey, Sam G, I'm pretty new here (as you can see by my teensy number of posts), but I'm also not too much of a spoiler lover. So I tend to gravitate away from those. Thanks for the info!
Sam G 01-01-2009, 01:04 PM No Probalem Blue Dog. There's plenty to keep anyone reading for a very long time.
spero 01-22-2009, 03:15 PM Just finished Lost Ate My Life! Really enjoyed it! Makes me even fonder of Lost, and more appreciative of this forum and the people responsible. THANKS!!
hijinx 01-22-2009, 10:49 PM Hey you all everybody!
Sorry I have been so absent lately. I'm in a self-imposed 'lockdown' as I work on my next book. I am still checking in and reading all these nice messages - they are great inspiration
But I won't be able to post very often until probably May. However, you can find me on the linear board here every new show night ;)
Thank you all SO MUCH for your support of me, Doc, this book and The Fuselage.
Bluedog1121 04-04-2009, 05:35 PM Finished this in the wee hours of the night, and it was rockin'! Such a fun read. :)
I recommend it to everyone on the 'Lage!

Just wanted to let y'all know that if any of you are planning to come to LOST Weekend this May, Jon (DocArzt) and I BOTH are planning to attend - so bring your books and we'll sign them for you!!

It would be great to meet Doc Arzt, though knowing me I would forget to take my book with me for signey things.
I wish I had thought to take it to D*C last year, I could have gotten Grant Gould to sign the cover! :D I had a fun chat with him about his designs for the book, I love that you found a great artist that is also a huge LOST fan. :)

Oh, maybe I'll have to send my copy to my twin then, so she can take it with her to get you to sign it.
