Wow...another season of the biggest show on TV is upon us...this thread is to discuss the wacky (other than Paula's insane behavior) the wild and the truly tone deaf as we make our way to crowning a new American Idol...

Well, throw a bandana on my head & call me Sanjaya...

Let the Idolatry begin!!

I read that this season will focus more on the singers and less on celebrity guests.. I liked the celeb guests though & hope they still are a large part of the show..

But yeah, last season I felt disengaged... Didn't know anything about them really because they didn't have time to focus on their lives & bios.., so the "I care" factor was down over other seasons...

When does this start? AI, I mean.

MOC - It started tonight, and will be on tomorrow also.. 2-night season premiere / 2 hours each night..

It was a pretty good mix of loons and talent... The loons are getting stranger every year..

So far I'm rooting for 3 from tonight... Two had stories to pull on your heartstrings (one with a disabled daughter / one sold a horse to get here)... and the other is an amazing looking 20-yr old guy.... All could sing like nobody's business..

Ah... it's probably just getting started out here. Not sure if I'll watch it tonight. :)

"If she were a bath tub...I would caulk her?" Are you freaking kidding me?

LOVED the cage fighting horse trainer...and ms Stalker...great voice.

"Paula's stalker"... just frikken bizarro-world there.. Especially when he shushed Simon (Simon let me finish!!) Surprised security let him stay that close.. (If she was a doggy, I would walk her... yuk)

"Ms. Victorious" (Janis Joplin wanna-be/ William Dafoe look-alike)... Good Lord, it's only a matter of time until we see her on WWE wearing a cape and pile-driving her opponents..

"Borat-Lite".... He sang "Mr. Bee-Gees" (didn't know there was just one guy) and wants to find a woman to love... "from her head to her nipples"... (ya got it half-right, bud..)

"Star Wars Chick"... Felt terrible for her grandparents.. She's a handful, I'll bet.. Waaaaaa.... they only pick the pretty ones... waaaaa.. (that's right - the socially inept ones usually don't get through either)

BD - I knew you -and most other red-blooded males -would like the cage-fighting horse trainer... (I like her too... she sold her horse! *sniff*)

Nothing sexier than a woman that can serenade you and then catch you in a triangle choke if you make her mad:)

I think she has that "it" factor and hope she does well.

Luvs - lol.. I ain't tellin

Sawyer's Mojito... no freakin' way! Good for her!! Simon was really enamored with her... I didn't think she was great - but her personality won them over...

Holy crap - the white pimp?? WTF? (I am your brother... your best friend foreeeeeever!!)

Loved the girl that did the Britney impression.. She was great. (hope she remembers her panties  )... and the backup singer from the beginning.. awesome voice.

Oh I did notice randy Randy....they are quite the trio of judges

America is so very eclectic in their talent....I will watch and learn more tonight

ETA: I got to see the dynamo cage fighter BD and she is lovely (a per chance re-run on pay tv moment!!)......but my fav is the one with the disabled little girl so far....beautiful soul with a great voice and driven by the desire to accomplish something that goes way beyond the norm

Lost Laura - excellent & thanks... good to have you back!

Sawyer's Mojito... she has an incredible attitude.. I hope she enjoys her journey.. The AI judges are showing a lot of heart this season.

BD - you mean "Kiss some girls"? That father was CREEPY.. The weird little key-locket thingy.. seemed like some new parental control cult

Luvs - The mother of the disabled girl (Angela Martin) is my fave so far too.. Sis & I went all weepy for her.. Great voice, great smile, great attitude... And incredible support system..

It made me wish that the 16-year old who broke down and cried (Temptress, the one who takes care of her sick, obese mother) would aspire to that level.. But it seemed like that little girl has had too much put upon her shoulders.. A shame.

For those of you who missed the premiere, here's some highlights:

Talented:
Angela Martin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMDCEo0-BXQ)

Kristy Cook (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8hxo--7ehU) (you're welcome, BD ;) )

Chris Watson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq9h3D1FLz8)

Beth Stalker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMctT0xgru0)

Weird:
Paula's Stalker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mo4MJUpX8fo)

Alexis Cohen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Vy_vi2Gcy4).. wow....

Let's not forget the dufus that sang "Livin on a Prayer" what was with the crossed arms and the spinning in circles?? That..was...just...weird

But that is why we love this show!

palomino_grl78

I was also freaked out by the Heart wearing dad. I am all for parental involvement but that seems a little extreme. Girls, how freaked out would you be if a guy brought you home and he is wearing a key and his dad is wearing the heart the key goes to.

Does it seem to anyone else that Simon just seems to be going through the motions this season. I wonder how "into it" he is. But that's just my observation.

ame en peine

Freaks is right... but yeah, that's what makes this show fun!

Forgot about the spinning arm-crosser.... (he was Iooping..looping)

Girls, how freaked out would you be if a guy brought you home and he is wearing a key and his dad is wearing the heart the key goes to. Very. Um... check, please. It's ridiculous....creepy... cultish.... Parents of the Corn...

Does it seem to anyone else that Simon just seems to be going through the motions this season. I wonder how "into it" he is. But that's just my observation.I noticed he's way more low-key... Maybe he's getting tired of his own schtick, and trying not to be so nasty.. I personally love the subtle faces he makes now... They speak volumes..

Favorite moment:
The girl who though she was great and said she sounds like Mariah Carey.. (she likes to laugh at all the "losers")..
After her audition Simon says "Oh. My. God."
To which she replies.. "Yesssssss!"

I'm rooting for the widower with the little boy... Like the Aussie guy... the Irish girl whose visa ran out last time... the singing half of the Simon Stalker Sisters..

Some of them won't stop singing! Even when they're being yelled at.. I think they need a gong.. Simon can be Chuck Barris..

Yeah, he was the little mouth that roared.. I didn't like that Dolly either. Even if she sounds like Dolly Parton, is that really what the next American Idol should sound like?

I liked Chizzee (?) too.. In the scheme of things there haven't been too many outstanding singers.. At least he was good.

My least fave part of every season is the Hollywood episodes, because it shows all the interpersonal drama, and I can't stand watching that. I like the singing drama, not the social drama.

That being said, they appear to be using instruments this year, which should be.... interesting. Or possibly just odd. Or bad.

Oh, that puppy was adorable. Simon was in love. But that girl? And the twins? Disgusting. And frankly... dumb. Ick.

I agree, Laura. They all needed to get a life.

Baileysdad
02-08-2008, 05:39 PM
The twins and the little gal need to get a reality check...gads was that disturbing.

Personally, as a musician, I cannot wait to see what happens when they break out the instruments...it seperates the true artist from an entertainer...

LostLaura
02-09-2008, 07:15 PM
I agree, BD, but I'm curious how they are going to deal with the fact that this is a singing competition, and lots of those people cannot play an instrument.

ame en peine
02-09-2008, 07:58 PM
Instruments will add an interesting layer to the show.. I hope they follow through here..

I didn't get the impression that instruments are mandatory.. ('they'll be allowed to play").... If you play an instrument they're encouraging it.. (Rolling Stone article (http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/11/05/american-idol-adding-guitar-strumming-subtracting-mentors/))

But... it sounds like they're still on the fence (http://www.projo.com/tv/content/lb_american_idol_01-15-08_308JORP_v8.ddd552.html)about allowing instruments..

The producers are still discussing whether to allow the contestants to accompany themselves with instruments when the live performances by the 24 finalists begin Feb. 19. Lythgoe, first among equals among the show’s four executive producers, said he favors allowing the use of instruments.

“I think being able to play an instrument as well as sing shows a complete roundness of talent,” he said. But it does raise a fairness issue for those contestants who only sing. And American Idol, as the judges repeatedly tell contestants during the course of each season, is foremost a singing competition.

I didn't watch Tues. night but I did watch last night, and I have to say, this looks like a really good top 24. And for once, the majority of the boys are actually cute! Some in al little kid and some in an older sexy kind of way. Either way, that's pretty good. The girls have some good voices, but I am much less interested in their personalitites. We'll see how that plays out... if I change my mind as we delve into the top 24...

No... I think you're right on. I was not crazy about him from the get-go... but I think they were so ga-ga about him and focused so much on him that they should have at least put him in the competition. He needs to learn ho to play well with others.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that wasn't crazy about the kid. I read a story on MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23153207/) that they may have let him go to try to avoid another Sanjaya fiasco. Makes sense. He's getting his 15 min of fame though...I think he's going to be on Ellen today.

I like the top 24 so far. I think they've made some good choices, but only time will tell for sure. This speculation (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23226357/) about who is going to make it to the end is kind of funny to read. Interesting about Carly's prior record deal. One things for sure, don't ever make it to Idol and expect to keep anything secret.

Looking forward to tonight's show.

I think I'm going to do a little Watching Live AI tonight. This is my faaaavorite part of the season. Small stage. You can really hear their vocals. THEY can hear their own vocals. By the time it reaches the top 5, I get bored and already know who I want to win. But the top 24 is still really fresh and cool.

Did they get rid of the small stage last year? I think they went straight to the big stage and I HATED that. I could be wrong about that. But if I'm right, I'm so glad they're on the little stage.

I liked David Hernandez. He's nothing speeeecial. But he's good. I'd like to hear him again, at least.

Chikeze (sp?) opened his song BAD. Too low for him. Hm, the middle is.... not so good either. I have a feeling that Simon is going to say that he sounds like a lounge singer. Cause that's how I feel, at least. And Simon and I often agree. ;)

Ew, the ending was lame. Okay, let's see what Simon says. (lol I keep planning to post but then I figure I'll wait...)

Yep, he hated it. Corny. Cheesey. Yes. Thanks, Simon. Agree.

ETA: Okay, rock star David Cook. Really liked him actually.

Jason Yaeger. Moon River? Are you kidding me? Hate it. I hope Simon rips into him for being old-fashioned. And lame. LAME. Ew and he stuttered over a word. THANK YOU Simon. Cruise ship. Yes.

Ok, Robbie Carrico: another rocker. Like him a lot. I mean, visually he reminds me of Bucky Dent, and I hated him, so that's not good for me. BUT vocally he's good. And he made the song very modern.
Okay, he looks NOTHING like Timberlake.

Little 17 year old David Archuleta. Cute pie. Good voice. But the low parts of the song were just sliiiightly too low for me. But I really like how he made that song his own. Super cute. Tweens will love him. Old ladies will love him. And apparently me. haha.

Woah the ending of his song was HOT! Love him.
And I like that he's all breathless and nerdy at the end. Ha!

Ok, Danny Noreaga: Okay, didn't like it. He's funny. But like.... it just didn't work for him. Eh. I did NOT like him in those pants. I didn't need see that much about him. heh.

Um, Luke Menard. CUTE!!
ew, married. grrr.

Ok, let's see how he can sing. blurg.... I don't like it. "pitchy" and.... frankly, boring. What's his deal? Does he have a style/genre that fits him?
Um and I hated the ending. Stupid high note. Stupid grinning wife. lol.
Ah, Simon smart guy: forgettable. Yes.

Colton Berry: good song for him. He's not bad at all. But he does NOTHING for me. He's sort of cheestastic. His personality.
And.... again Simon TOTALLY agrees with me. Thank you, Simon!

Um, Garrett. Not a good hair situation at all. Like it frankly grosses me out.
Yes, I am being wicked superficial tonight.
Oh, my goodness, what did he do to that song??? He made it even MORE old-fashioned! And the vocals are HORRID. I can't watch. Simon will tear into him.

David Castro: LOVE HIM. Finally someone original and cute and talented. Love the dreads. Love the smile and the blue eyes. He would toooootally fit in with the pop-folk scene. The ending was a bit rough, actually. But the rest was great. I can't wait to hear what Simon says.
Yay, Simon liked it! Woohoo "terrific"!!

OMG Michael Johns is CUUUUUTE. OMG Australian. So yummy.
Doing The Doors. Omg HOT. Love the scarf. But he's clearly wearing a wedding band. Darnit. But he's 29. And I love that someone older is in the competition. Not all of the vocals were there imo but it was still really good. Good entertainer. And dammit his wife is hot. GRRRR of course she is. ;)
He could win. Simon loves him too.Yay! :jump1:

Okay, that's a wrap!

Lost Laura - who knew we had a "Watching Live" thread going here?? You're too funny..

Just a few stood out for me..

Little David - he's going to go far.. But (going to sound really picky here) it sounds like he needs a nebulizer or something.. His breathing is really loud while he sings, to the point of being distracting. (end of pickiness).. LL - I agree... the tweens are going to go nuts for him

Rasta-dude.. liked him a lot.. He's very original and looks like a natural.. The guitar helped rather than hindered him..

Michael Johns.. wow. He's the whole package. (Rooting for him..)

Luke Menard - His voice was way too high, but he looks like Orlando Bloom to me..

Yeah, I had my own Watching Live going. Join me tomorrow! ;)

I hope the tweens vote Little David. Such a cutie!

Luke I think might go home. When I watched the brief re-caps I thought he was an option but I HOPE that these 2 go home: Jason and Garrett. I really hope I never have to hear those 2 again. Everyone else was good enough to at least be given a 2nd chance, and obviously some of those guys were GREAT!

Not really an impressive night overall...lots of really safe safe songs...come on guys..step it up...the 60s had some AWESOME rockers and we get freakin' "Moon River" and two bad bad Elvis songs??? Very bland night...

What these guys forget...is that 95 percent of the performers are going to bust out the ballads...Chris Daughtry put this competition on it's head by making intense rock songs his own and really putting a stamp of originality on them..Just like Michael Johns did with "Light my Fire.." he rocked it and the crowd ROARED and all the judges praised him highly...HINT HINT!!!

Neil Sedaka?? Andy Williams? "Daydream?"

Missed the first half hour. Anyone good? Started with Ailane Whitaker (sp?) She has my birthday tomorrow! So I was sending her good vibes. And she did a really good job. And she's pretty. I mean, she's pretty annoying. heh. But she's pretty darn good. Because was weak but middle and ending were very good.

Amanda: I mean, she's good. And she's funny and real. But I don't actually like her style or voice. And I don't think teens will vote for her but we'll see.

Oh goodness, both Amy Davis and the nanny were horrible to me. Horrible.

Alexandar Lushington: I actually really liked her! The higher notes were weak. But her low register is really hot. I was really impressed by the brief bit they showed of her from Hollywood doing Amy Winehouse. Yowza she sounded good.
Boo to Simon for not "getting it."

Kady Malloy: good. Very good. Sometimes her voice sounded like Celine Dion's tone, which was quite shocking. Unfortunately she did a couple weird things with her voice, which did not sound good. Hopefully they'll get her to quit doing that. "Groovy Kind of Love" is 60s??

Asia'h is AWESOME. I never thought I would hear Janis Joplin like that, and it was so soulful and so cool. Very neat style.

Ramiel (sp?): She's very good. I mean, this performance didn't wow me as much as it did the judges. But she's good and should go far.

Saisha (sp?): very, very good. She's very cute.

Ok, Carly. I'm sorry, BOBBY, but I can't stand her. I mean, yes, her voice is outstanding. But she's musical theater to me. Old-fashioned to me. And her dress? Yuck. I'm sorry. Thank you to Simon for agreeing with me. Yes, old-fashioned! Yes, cabaret!

Ok recap of the girls I missed: Kristy: nothing special but super cute.
Joanne: sharp. Oh man, veeeery sharp.

Oh, I only missed two?? Wow. Go me!

LOL... Laura's "Watching Live" thread lives on..

Yes, "Groovy Kind of Love" was sixties... Yikes - you were born the year I graduated high school, no wonder you weren't sure... ;)

Happy Birthday in advance!

I was really surprised some of them didn't listen to the judge's (Simon's) advice, and update the songs to make them relevant. They've said this more times than I can count, yet some of the girls got on stage and regurgitated the same ol' sound as the original.. Blows my mind.

Simon gave some of his best advice tonight.. They each have an incredible shot at stardom by being on the show.. step up and don't blow it.

I thought Syesha was great (Tobacco Road was a very good song choice)..

Amanda (rocker nurse) really brought it to the table.. but she could quickly pigeon-hole herself with that one sound of hers..

I didn't get Alexadrea either... There were some real problems with her performance.. She shouldn't have gone for the high notes.

Alaina reminds me of Carrie Underwood.. strong voice.

Brooke's (blonde nanny who never saw an r-rated movie) is getting annoying to me..

Kristy should stop straightening her hair.. she's blending into the woodwork..

Asia'h was great..

She's never seen an R-rated movie?? Are you kidding me? I'm sorry but that's just weird.... I really don't like her, honestly. I know I'm being wicked judgmental and supeficial in this thread but her hair is so BIG and her face looks very old compared to her age. Thanks for the birthday wishes ame! I almost posted in the Elders thread that I am "official" now but I didn't want to pimp my own birthday lol.

I love the watching live discussion. Awesome idea.

I didn't get to see the guys at all. I'm in the process of moving and the TV was down to be moved. The girls were pretty good. I don't know all the names yet but I think right now Carly and Asia'h are my favorites.

Ok watching live eliminations:

Didn't like that boy that 1st got the boot (don't know his name), but him singing his song again after the boot didn't impress me so I'm sure he deserved to go.

Didn't like the chick that got the boot either..."Where the Boys Are"?? Come on. Be adventurous!!! Oh wait, she stinks, so that was an adventure for her.

Now Paula is pimping her new video/album. Wha??? Tune is catchy but she kinda sounds like she's trying to be 25 instead of however old she is. It's not "Straight Up" that's for sure.

ETA: What is with the way they are eliminating ppl? "Can I see XX on the stage.....You are safe....Oh but by the way so and so is out the door". I don't know if I like it. I appreciate them cutting it out with the overdramatic pauses, but blindsiding people when it's not even their turn? I dunno.......

ETA2: Garrett and Amy! That's their names. heh Give me a few more shows...I'll get their names straight. I agree with the decision to let Joanne go. Not the best, but keep in mind it is also hard for me to listen to that song and not think of "My Best Friends Wedding".

I agree that the way they're eliminating people is kind of cold.. I really felt for that first kid... C'mon up here, fella! You're going home.

Lost Laura-not kidding.. she's never seen an r-rated movie..

Paula's video... Her "voice" has been manipulated, synthesized, run through phase shifters and vocoders.... to the point where it's not even a voice any more.. So far tonight, the boys have been good, but not great. I definitely don't think any of them have been bad. But none of them are wowing me. I just really want to see the cute 16 year old.... David.

I did enjoy Killer Queen a lot, just because I love that song, and Luke (?) did a pretty good job. I mean, that's a really hard song vocally, and he did well.

I'm going to catch myself before posting: David Hernandez was FANTASTIC. Wow.

ETA: Chikeze was very, very good. He's not the one for me, personally, but tonight was quite good.
ETA2: David Cook rocked it. And now I think I have a crush because he's a "word nerd"!! But seriously, I was totally impressed by him. I can hear him on the radio, in a cool band, right now.
ETA3: Ok, WOW. If David Archuletta doesn't win, something is crazy. This boy is amazing, talented, cute, sweet.... ugh he's just so sweet! Anyway, his vocal was AMAZING.

Nothing really wowed me tonight... except maybe "Imagine".. He's outstanding...

David Cook sounded good, but I shut my eyes and it felt like I was just listening to a good bar band.. He needs to just bring a bit more vocals to the performance.. I didn't like his arrogant statement to Simon in the end, how it's the audience's decision that matters..

Aussie rocker - I love him but he had a couple of issues tonight..

Cheesy McSmiley.. Seriously - someone needs to wipe that smile off his face.. It's driving me nuts. I feel like he's doing an impression of Val Kilmer from "Top Secret"..

Colton did that last week, smiling through "Suspicious Minds".. Not sure if he read the lyrics he was singing, but it's not a happy song.

A bit OT, but I got American Idol Karaoke Revolution... very fun, very addictive..

I felt bad for the "nineteen other" singers as Simon pointed out. Talk about taking the air out of your balloon.

Don't get me wrong I agree the the Imagine performance was outstanding but he might as well told the others ther were doomed. Was Paula crying, it looked like it.Yeah, Simon's good at picking a favorite or two.. but it makes the other ones work that much harder... Yup, Paula was crying.. Again.

This guy (http://www.americanidol.com/contestants/season7/jason_yeager/).. I'm waiting for him to smile his way through "Anarchy in the UK" or maybe one of Nine Inch Nail's songs (Animal) next week :drowsy:

David Cook sounded good, but I shut my eyes and it felt like I was just listening to a good bar band.. He needs to just bring a bit more vocals to the performance.. I didn't like his arrogant statement to Simon in the end, how it's the audience's decision that matters.. Liked David Cook enough, but agree about his comment.

Aussie rocker - I love him but he had a couple of issues tonight.. Yes, I really love himt he most, like personality, hotness, etc.. but he wasn't great last night.

A bit OT, but I got American Idol Karaoke Revolution... very fun, very addictive..

I think Simon is right for saying that. The other 18 pale in comparison. And maybe the rest will work all the harder because of it. Plus, I am sure a girl or 2 will step up to the plate and make it a real battle. (I hope!)

I thought Carly was very, very good, and I was surprised that the judges didn't like it that much.
I thought Brooke was really good and did pick the right song, but I was very surprised that the judges didn't comment on how bad her low notes were.
I agree with them that the Ramiele wasn't so good tonight. That was a shame.
ETA: I thought Kristy was quite boring. I am not sure why the judges liked it so much. But Simon gave really good advice about singing country. I can totally see that. (I'm sorry, but what the hell is the shirt she was wearing???)
I like Amandaas a person, but I can't stand her look, esp. her hair tonight---scary! And she can belt a song, but she can't sing regularly at all. She sounded awful on the melodic parts of the song tonight.
Blond in blue dress: did not like her. And I hate how whenever Simon thinks a girl is pretty/bankable, etc. that even if she does a bad job, he says good things. He never does that for other people. Sigh.

I liked Ramiele tonight. She's a little powerhouse. And Carly -she was great.

LL - I agree about Brooke.. I was surprised when they praised her performance..

Brittany impersonator's focusing too much on how she looks, what her face is doing.

Kristy Lee doesn't look comfortable in her own skin up there.. That was good advice , LL - to sing country.. Bring her back to her roots, like her "Amazing Grace" rendition..

I love Syesha but not tonight - that song did nothing for her..

I agree, Amanda may be pigeon-holed with that voice of hers.. And the hair... I'm all for funky hair, but that was bizarre..

Asia'h - the one who lost her dad.. Was she starting to cry during the song? I admire and respect her, but choosing "All By Myself" after what she's been through might be tempting fate..

The ending was great, for sure. I was surprised Simon said that the song was too big for her in general. I just thought that the beginning stunk because her voice gave out from being sick. Sometimes when you are sick, it is harder to get out the softer, lower notes than it is to force out the belting, higher notes. I think that's what happened to her. But in general, I really, really like her, and I think when her voice recovers she'll be great again.

I have to say, I'm surprised they think Carly has the best female voice. I'm not sure. But I've also
gotta say.... none of these girls compared to David Archuletta. Not even close.

Who will go home tomorrow? Cheese McSmiley for sure. Have to think about the other guy.
Girls? Oof this is hard.... I think Amanda, because she was bad tonight, and I don't think she'll get enough popular vote because of her style. Other girl? hmm not sure. Maybe a blond since there's a few of them?

This week was just eh for me. The guys were MUCH better than the girls that's for sure. I liked the kid at the end on the guys night (I swear I'll get their names down soon), but the women were horrible! I really enjoyed Carly and Brooke the most. I am pretty sure the rocker/nurse chick with the horrible hair and pants is going home tonight (Amanda?). Not sure who else. I didn't enjoy the guy with the dreads that much either, or the karaoke dude that wore all black (performed somewhere in the middle of the show).

I thought it was a disaster for a lot of them...how could you tackle an "All by myself" without having that layered voice??

Amanda is my fave but I actually FF through 90 percent of it..it was HORRID...she is a rusty nails blues singer and should not do melody based music like that...that was so uncomfortable to watch...that hair went out 20 years ago...

Overall..very forgetable...nobody, boys or girls, have come close to "Imagine" and now, they all have to match or go beyond what he did with that song...and I don't think 90 percent of them can...

Tooootally. And that's why I think Simon's comment to that effect was justified. They all need to rise to the challenge. But many of them can't. I have a feeling this season is gonna get real old, real fast. Why? Because we'll know that many of these people are lost causes, and we'll be treading water until the top 2 or 3. Speaking of LOTR, my least favorite male is now the Orlando Bloom look-a-like, Luke Menard. Another stilted, robotic performer. (really wanted to like him, too..) But I'd rather see someone really put their soul into it and falter a bit, than watch a singer look like they're going through an overly-rehearsed routine, as he does.

So, tonight. David Archuletta of course was wonderful again. I agree with Simon that he needs to go upbeat.

Danny Noriega... um, it was okay. Interesting way of doing that song. He's a trip, so I hope he stays on the show. Mostly for entertainment value, lol.

Michael is so hot and so great, but I agree that he has not connected with the right song yet. I love HIM but so far not what he has done.

OMG David Cook what a very, very cool variation on that song! I had no idea what it even was at first! lol. I looooved it. I kind of like him. He rocked out but also was soft and just plain nice sounding. I am so glad that Simon said those fantastic things about him.

David Hernandez was good. He's so not my thing (and I am not talking about him being a stripper in a gay club, lolol) but he does have a very good voice.

Jason Castro did one of my favorite songs!! And apparently Simon and Randy's favorite too... He definitely sounded good, but it was a little low for him at the end of the chorus and man his voice failed him at the end. Yikes. He's kind of becoming boring to me... not sure why. Maybe cause everything has been a bit slow paced from him? Dunno. I was a little surprised how much Simon loved it tonight, but I suppose it is a difficult song to sing.

Chikeze: very good vocal. I am not sure why Simon didn't like it. BUT it was boring. And I think Chikeze might be voted off.

I didn't see Luke Menard so here's my opinion based on the recap of him:
Wake me up Before you go-go??? Okay, BAD. He's GONE. Cute but has never followed through. He's just not good enough.

Okay, Luke better go, maybe Chikeze. I am also a little worried about Michael Johns....
we'll see....

I mostly agree with LostLaura. Luke is so gone but I'm not sure on who should go with him. Talent wise David Cook surprised the crap out of me. He brought on some game this week (if I can now get over his comb-over) :eek2:

Danny Noriega (misspelled) is starting to annoy me.......he just too cutesy.

Jason Castro has great appeal but he needs a little more stage "comfort level". He seems very uncomfortable.

The Aussie cutie needs to step it up if he wants to stay.

David Archuleta still seems the "guy to beat" He seems very broad in his capabilities.

Chikezi (also misspelled) is actually good imho but is very similar to many other already established singers....he needs to make himself stand out from the crowd.

Hernandez...well he's had enough written about him today.

ame en peine
03-04-2008, 11:16 PM
I agree with most of both your comments..

David A. was good.. his vocals are amazing, but yeah not like last week.. It would be hard to beat that..

Michael Johns -still love him.. He has "star" written all over him..

Noriega's "Valley Guy" speak is like fingers on a chalkboard to me.. His singing was OK, but overall he's becoming far too annoying..

Now I know why Hernandez's moves andlooks he gives get on my nerves.. (My sister and I shout at the TV every time he's on..) He's been classicly trained in male stripper leers, sneers and swaggers..

Orlando Bloom - I mean Luke Menard.. He's been at the top of my vote-off list even before tonight.. And after that schmaltzy performance it's a shoe-in.. Wake me up after he go-gos...

David Cook.. didn't want to like him - not sure why.. He disturbs me for some reason. But his performance tonight was good. Not great IMO.. but good.

Castro - there was a collective sigh in the room by the 3rd note.. I adore that song. He did well..

Chikeze... is getting cheezy..

It'll be interesting to see who gets voted off... (other than Luke Menard, that is..;) )

I gotta say, I think it's gotta be Chikeze to go. He is just like so many other established singers, and we've already had Ruben win AI (and he's not selling albums well at all...), so....

That is why I like Simon so much on the show...everyone...from Ryan, the audience to the contestants, know his is the final stamp on their performance.

They suffer Randy's fancy wordsmithing and straddling the fence posturing, Paula's inane rambling and sickening sweet gushfests with smiles and head nods...but when it comes down to Simon...they lock in on him heart stopped waiting to hear what he thinks...it is amazing to watch. It is like Oprah recommending a book...he literally makes careers with his comments which 98 percent of the time are spot on wether we agree with him or not...

Paula looked really different last night too...

ame en peine

Paula's getting worse (again).. She actually had to be corralled in last night by Randy.. Not sure if anyone else caught that.. She was ramblin' on & Randy looks off camera to see someone giving the "high sign" to shut her up.. So he politely nudged her arm.. Then Simon practically had to sit her down at the end of the show because she was standing when she should have been sitting.. Yowzers.

Simon is the only voice of reason on the show.. Randy can at least give some criticism vs. Paula's inability to say anything negative.. But Simon cuts right through the BS every time to say what should be said..

Yes, I've seen it. As somone who once followed RENT quite obsessively, I know my teenage flamboyant gay boys pretty well, .Ooooh, I love Rent.. I saw it on stage... just got the soundtrack & DVD.. and have been known to perform (to myself, of course  ) "Out Tonight"..
100%
If Paula's so loopy, why do they keep her on the show? They could easily find another woman to faux bash heads with Simon. Good question Laura.. I've wondered that too.. I think she might be considered comic relief.. She might not know that though... And I'd bet there's some of us who tune in wondering what the heck she's going to do next.. Sometimes I watch with one eye squeezed shut.. ;)

watching live ;)
I liked Aisha (sp?) a lot. Simon's point is good--she needs to change the song so she doesn't sound like second-rate Whitney BUT she sounded good, and I hope she advances.

Kady's performance was pretty good! It was kind of boring..... but it was good. You know, Simon is right AGAIN. She has no personality when she sings!

Amanda SOUNDED amazing. But she looked soooo off. She was looking down the whole time. Looked uncomfortable, unhappy. What was wrong with her? The judges totally praised her performance, and apparently didn't notice her odd behavior during the performance. But Simon did notice she wasn't smiling at all during the praise, adn Ryan commented on it too. Something was wrong with her tonight. Weird.

Carly: she sounded fantastic but I also could only think of the Celine version and have no clue why she chose that song. I don't even know who sang it originally. Obviously she'll sail through though.

Kristy: Simon's right. She might be cut. But she sounded good and picked a good song. I think the trick will be: will she get the country fans votes? If she does, then she'll be fine. If they are like "eh we already have Carrie Underwood" then she's gone.

Ramiele: I HATED it. I hated what she did to the song. It just sounded stupid. And while she has a good voice, I just don't think it worked for her AT ALL. Randy and Simon were totally right in their responses.

(OMG what the hell is wrong with Paula when she is talking to Ramiele??? omg lol)

OMG Ramiele and Danny being buddies?? TOTALLY see it! Love it!

HATED Brooke White, but then again, I don't really like her and I think that song is kind of cheesey, and then I didn't like her take on it either.... I knew Simon would love it. I guess she is just not my thing.

Syesha (sp?): was good. not great. but I liked it. and I like her.

I definitely think 2 of the 3 blonds are going home (not Brooke).

Judges were hilar at the end. They didn't have time to talk on and on, so they didn't. lol.

One last thing: What is with all of the high waisted pants/shorts??? 4!!! OMG gross. I think they all did it b/c it's in fashion but it's also an 80s look but GROSS. Please make that style go away.

Kady needs a ticket back to where ever she came from.. Had to pinch myself to keep awake.

Taking on Pat Benatar is risky to say the least. Brooke was smart enough to avoid having to reach the highest notes.

Amanda acted like she had spinach in her teeth when the judges were talking. Don't know what was up with that. She sang well and Joan Jett was a good choice. I hope she stays.

Carly to me still holds the high cards as the one to beat.

The others eh, all were ok and should be
My choices....Kristy and Kady, sounds like a duo . Maybe they should think about it.

They better check all the judges meds........gees they were all tongue-tied tonite.

*yawn* oh... is the show over??

Whoa... I thought Paula was going to collapse in Simon's lap. (It's medication time, Nurse Ratched..) Ticking time bomb, that one is..

Kady's gotta go... (I'd guess 2 of the 3 blondes will be exiting.. Kady/Kristy/ Brooke/)

Hated Brooke - I shut my eyes and was in a coffee house. "Smelly Cat" is next up.. (she's gotta be the oldest-looking 24 year old I've ever seen...)

Amanda was good... I wasn't loving it, but it was good,... LostLaura - we were saying the same thing here.. She needs to look up and engage the camera.. I have a feeling a) she's actually kind of shy... and b) she's used to playing on a stage and looking down to the audience.. Looking up doesn't seem to come natural to her.

Carly - I liked it. Even if it was the Celine version (Cyndi Lauper is the original artist, LL)

Syesha was alright.. The rest were all just alright..

Asia'h and Ramiele were good...

Kristy.... she needs to become less repressed and it rip..

Hell, all of them need to let it rip!!.... because the competition needs something like this:

Whoa... I thought Paula was going to collapse in Simon's lap. (It's medication time, Nurse Ratched..) Ticking time bomb, that one is.. Seriously, I know they are friends in real life, fine. But she was like ON his lap. He's engaged....

Kady's gotta go... (I'd guess 2 of the 3 blondes will be exiting.. Kady/Kristy/ Brooke/)

Hated Brooke - I shut my eyes and was in a coffee house. "Smelly Cat" is next up.. (she's gotta be the oldest-looking 24 year old I've ever seen...) omg, thank you!!! I totally agree and that is exactly what I said. I think it'll be Kady and Kristy. I can't believe another blond left last week. How many freakin' blonds can there be??? If I had my way, Brooke would go too. I really can't stand her. And WHY does she look so old?? She has these huge smile lines around her mouth that make her look 50.

Again, thank you. She looked sooo uncomfortable! In the past she hasn't, though, so I was actually thinking something might be wrong. Like a personal issue or feeling sick. I don't know.

Carly - I liked it. Even if it was the Celine version (Cyndi Lauper is the original artist, LL) Really? I can't picture what that would even sound like. All I can picture is Celine singing it. Funny for Celine to cover Cyndi. huh.

Kristy.... she needs to become less repressed and it rip.. Seriously, I'd rather Kristy stay and get one more chance to show her real personality than to sit through Amanda's crap again.

Simon's engaged? I might have known that....

Did get to see the girls. Saw the boys though. I almost forgot it's on again tonight!!!

May I join your party here?

My thoughts on the 80s performances:

For the guys:
David's take on "Hello" was the best song of the night, followed by Jason's version of the Jeff Buckley tune. Worst: easily, Luke M's Go Go.
I'm not liking the 'Aussie via Atlanta GA' guy. He seems to be trying to channel Jim Morrison and it's a put-off for me. Like Randy Jackson, I liked the arrangement of Tainted Love. I think Danny sings pretty well (certainly above average). I don't think he'll last much longer though.

The girls:
Brooke was fantastic with the Pat Benatar song. I kinda' liked the country'ish-ness of the Journey song, the ending was poor though.
The two Whitney songs were karaoke, the rest were forgettable. Worst: Biker chick with the Joan Jett song. How the judges missed that Gawd-awful pitchy ending is beyond me. It was terrible.

OVERALL: There's only one singer that I would buy all three singles (if iTunes offered the whole song and not just the abbreviated live performances), and that's Jason C. Daydream (wk1) was fantastic, his take on the Andy Gibb song was fresh and could be a hit. The Jeff Buckley cover was also very good but it's not my favorite song.

So... ever since Hollywood week finished... me & MrMOC have been trying to figure this out. We've noticed it every week. I think she is either *really* insecure or has some major anxiety thing going on. Or what I *really* think... is that she's hiding something. The vibe I get from her is almost like guilt.

Is that weird of me?

Yeah, he's engaged to a hot, younger British woman. She's a correspondant on Access Hollywood (or Extra or ET, I don't remember which one).

We are dissecting her like she's on Lost! ;) No, I tooootally agree! I am so glad you noticed too. Seriously, guilt might be the right word. Or like... remorse? lol. Like she wants to be good but hates that she's on American Idol? lol

I just thought of somethin...last week when Ryan announced the girls leaving at the end wasn't Amanda one of the bottom three? Maybe she's already figuring that she beat? That would explain her lack of emotion if she thinks she's already close to finished.

Kady's gone. We were all right on that front.

ETA: I was only 2 for 4. I am kind of in shock. Chikeze should have been gone. I know some of you hated Danny, but I am in SHOCK that he didn't get the teenage vote. :( I am seriously much more out of touch than I thought I was. ;) Ugh, and I really thought the blonds were gone. I liked Asia'h a lot, ever since her audition after her father died.... ugh, I was really hoping she'd get through. Oh well...

Kady, no problem.. But didn't expect to see Asia'h go.. (yet)

Whoa... I was really shocked to see Danny go.. He has a huge following, and he was the "Vote for the Worst" choice.. I hate to say it but that usually carries a lot of weight..

Luke... gone. as it should be.

You guys are too funny dissecting Amanda.. Maybe we can get a Hi-Res HDTV close-up shot of her disappointed face? :rotflmao2:

LostLaura.. Well, we didn't get the blonde thing right.. (1/2 right maybe).. I have a feeling Brooke will be with us for a while... Until it comes out that she's really 42 years old.. As much as Amanda's struggling with where to look.. I'm still pulling for her. I hope she can work on that.. Really thought the judges would bring it up so she could focus on correcting that..

Well I was right about Danny....just too cutesy.
But I was totally wrong about Kristy....I didn't see Asia'h getting booted. That actually surprised me.
You could be right about Brooke...maybe she's old enough to be River. Sorry. ;)

GUYS: Luke was no surprise, many picked that one. He had a good voice, pitch wise, it was just weak. It probably worked really well in the accapella group he was in, where the emphasis is on the blend and not a solo vocal.
Danny, I'm a little surprised but not too much. I expected that he wouldn't last very long but I thought he had another week. I think his attitude worked against him. He wasn't THAT bad of a singer. I mentioned it earlier, I actually liked (as did Randy J) the arrangement of Tainted Love.
I would have preferred that Micheal Johns be eliminated, I expected David Hernandez to be in the bottom along with Danny (instead of Chikezi).
I have the top three guys as: David A, Jason C, and David Cook.

GIRLS: As mentioned Kady was a no-brainer. Not only have her performances been lack-luster, the song selection has been odd. This weeks' Queen song really sealed it, I didn't remember that song and I like Queen.
I wasn't surprised at Asia'h. Before the show, my wife asked
