View Full Version : The Flags on Locke's bedside table
rimbounder 03-13-2005, 11:24 PM Did anyone else notice that there were two flags in some sort of a glass on Locke's bedside table, as he was on the phone with Helen? One was the US flag, and the other was a nautical flag for the alphabetic sign of V. It was white, with diagonal stripes of red. Does anyone have any idea what that's about?
kajalie 03-14-2005, 09:00 AM i looked it up online:
http://64.233.179.104/search?q=cache:iaSaEf5Qv5gJ:www.ecophotoexplorers. com/MarineSignalFlags.asp+nautical+flag+v+meaning&hl=en
says it means: I require assistance (not distress)

rimbounder 03-14-2005, 05:23 PM kajalie,
You are terrific! Really! First it took me forever to look it up, and the source that I had made no mention of "in need of assistance, but not in distress" . That makes so much more sense. How about joining me for drinks later since we're both on the tarmac. Everytime I look for the open bar, I get LOST.
Vertical 03-16-2005, 02:10 PM That's also the Alabama state flag:

kgmaus 03-16-2005, 02:25 PM There's been a bunch of discussion concerning Locke's flags.
There's a lot of agreement that one of the flags... (white with red) is the Culpeper Minute Men flag.
They were the first non-military, all volunteer group to fight along side the Military during the American Revolution.
When the Revolution was over, they all went home. Those in the Military.... obviously had to stay in the Military.
Vertical 03-16-2005, 02:45 PM Forgive me, but I can't find any reference stating that the Culpeper Minute Men flag has anything to do with red or white. From everything I can determine, it's an image of a cobra, with the phrases "Liberty or Death" and "Don't Tread On Me" on it.
Is there some link I'm missing showing a red x on a white background as the Culpeper Minute Men flag? And why is that theory so agreed upon? Also, could you point me to wherever these other discussions on the flags are?
kgmaus 03-16-2005, 07:51 PM Sorry, Verticle. You're right. I saw that somewhere in the Theories threads.
Looking at it now, it's hard to tell. Kinda looks like two red snakes crossed. And I don't see any writing either.
Vertical 03-16-2005, 08:55 PM No worries.
Looks exactly like either that nautical flag or the Alabama flag to me.
Naughty Paws 06-22-2005, 10:15 PM there's a total of four little flags in that stein on the nightstand ;)
Ratch 06-23-2005, 07:40 PM and of course the big U.S. flag on the wall.................Locke really is a great character study.................the producers/writers have done a great job............much more Locke in Season #2, please...........
factual 02-07-2006, 07:07 PM rimbounder- The white flag with the red X is the Cross of Burgundy, the flag of Spain from 1520 to 1785. It would have been seen in the US, with Spanish troops at the Battle of Mobile in 1780.
pibbsneaker 02-08-2006, 07:47 AM I posted this more than a year ago on the ABC boards, but the flag looks a little bit like the state flag of Alabama.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alabama
I have no idea what it means, but it probably means nothing.
Dellamona 02-08-2006, 01:41 PM Maybe that is where he was born?
factual 02-10-2006, 11:11 AM It probably doesn't mean that because it is the Cross of Burgundy.
QuinceTheCarpenter 03-19-2006, 10:01 PM screenshot of the flags in the stein on Locke's bedside table from 1x04 Walkabout:
http://www.lost-media.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&album=22&pos=362
The flag on the left (white with black lettering) appears to be the backside view of the Culpeper Minuteman flag (note the words OR DEATH and the tail of the snake) as seen here:
http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-culp.html
The flag on the right (white field with red X shape) appears to be the Puerto Rico "Cross of Burgundy" as seen here:
http://fotw.vexillum.com/flags/pr_crbur.html
Note the statement on that page, "Those of us above a certain age recall that the fort's colors *used* to have the saltire "couped" i.e. not stretching all the way to the corners" which describes what we see on Locke's version.
There is a U.S. flag in the middle and the white stein handle shows below and behind the red and white one. The stein itself has a Statue of Liberty and a U.S. flag.
wsprag 08-09-2006, 10:42 PM That's also the Alabama state flag:

Yes, that's right. The Alabama state flag. Maybe Locke has some Southern pride in him?
~Lirpa~ 08-10-2006, 12:50 AM No, Wsprag, it's the flag that Quince mentioned. It's most certainly not the AL flag.
