View Full Version : Newbie: derogarory term?
Ms Demeaner 03-15-2005, 04:30 PM So I've been reading some discussions on the term "newbie" and was wondering what everyone thinks.* I feel the term is derogatory.* I feel like calling someone a newbie is like calling them a dumba$$ and you're basically telling them they've done something wrong.*
I'm curious to see what the general consensus is.
peanutbutter101 03-15-2005, 04:33 PM I don't find it deragatory...we were all called newbies at some point because we were. That's exactly what it means. We're new...that's it! Doesn't make the person's opinion less than anyone else's.
Mallek 03-15-2005, 04:43 PM Yeah newbie just means your new - In England we call them Green Horns
halfrek 03-15-2005, 05:10 PM i certainly hope that NO ONE is using that term in a negative way. i do not think that newbie = dumba$$.
i hope that you dont feel that being new makes you less on this board...b/c it doesnt.
the FAQ (http://www.thefuselage.com/FAQ/index.php?p=default&cat=10#a77) clearly states that it should not be viewed in a negative context at all. :)
Ophelia 03-15-2005, 05:36 PM I would never consider a newbie or the term to be a bad thing. It simply means your new. I was a newbie once. Should I be offended that I was once called that? NO. Because thats retarded.
Oh and I just thought it was funny that you started a topic on demeaning terms when your UN itself is Ms. Demeaner.
Just ironic. ;)
Ms Demeaner 03-16-2005, 01:59 AM I only asked this question because of a thread I read and was curious.
The thread is in the spoiler section, so please be advised.

halfrek 03-16-2005, 02:19 AM i agree with the MODs that posted in the thread. i personally think that it was handled badly by the posters involved.
the MODs tried to get them to see the problem. i hope that you dont see that term used in a negative way anymore.
Ophelia 03-16-2005, 10:41 AM hmm, thats sad. :'( people take everything so literally...they should all be chill...like me! ;)

Wow nasty thread. IMHO people just need to take a second and calm down. It's just a TV show afterall.

Ditto! It's like a right of passage - you "earn your chops" so to speak.
If someone who is a long standing member is making you feel like you don't belong, pm a mod -- the whole point of a message board like this is to try to make everyone feel welcome and there opinions listened to and considered.
pug3323 03-16-2005, 11:08 AM I think 'newbie' is fine. i'm new. haha.. call me it all you want. and everyone here seems nice and no one is mean to new ppl. In college i've been called 'FNG' in the greek system and 'rookie' in sports.. sooo, newbie is nice :)
SpaceWrangler 03-16-2005, 11:14 AM Its not that hard....
The name of something is what it IS: *
If you are new you are a "newbie" a "rookie" a "new person" how could the name of what you are be derogatory or (derogarory * :) )
When I am reading a post I don't even look at a persons post count or look at how long they have been a member, It is what they post that counts.

Unfortunately not everyone thinks that way. Some people do use it as a derogitory term.
I"ve been around boards for quite a few years. So I've noticed the eletism that alot of the old timers have. The worst case of this is the View Askew boards. Then there are other boards that just completely ignore new people or people they deem unworthy of gracking their board. Even if it's a totally public board.
I've come to think of web boards as a huge playground in elementary school. So I try not to take things personal. People tend to sometimes detach themselves and not realize that there is a living breathing person on the other end of the screen.
If we all took the time to just calm down and accept people for who they are, warts and all, it would be a much better world.
Ophelia 03-16-2005, 11:43 AM yeah for awhile i was at this other lost board and NOBODY ever acknowledged me. I got tickd off and came here. that was the best move i could have made~ ;D
pug3323 03-16-2005, 11:48 AM yeah for awhile i was at this other lost board and NOBODY ever acknowledged me. I got tickd off and came here. that was the best move i could have made~ ;D
haha. you're right!!! I was on that board for a little while and they def had their little cliques. Not that thats bad, but they didnt pay attention to new ppl at all. And there always seemed to be drama... every day! Everyone on the board has the same reason for being there.. everyone loves the show.. Since I've joined here I havent logged back in over there :o
Ophelia 03-16-2005, 11:50 AM they just IGNORED me. SO i was like, "Puh! The heck with this!" and did a search for lost boards. The Fuselage popped up and I skimmed through the place, liked what I saw and never looked back! Now here I am with like 2000 posts and a horrible addiction not even remembering what it was like there. Hee hee ;)
Snabbygail 03-16-2005, 11:53 AM You are what you are. *Posters shouldn't be belitting others. *You also have to learn to be the bigger person and not get sucked into someone else's immaturity. *I see very little of this on the board. *Everyone is really great about having respect for others.
The ABC board was horrible. I'm so glad I joined the Fuselage.
sifichick 03-16-2005, 11:54 AM It irks me so much when people are ignored. Whether it's on a board or irl. grrrrrrrrrrrr
SpaceWrangler 03-16-2005, 11:54 AM I never really try to take it personal. *I state my opinion and I know that not everybody is going to agree w/ it. *In coversation or on a board this is usually true. *I think the key is a good board w/ a group of good people. *Most of the time on here some of the best discussions are w/ people who do not have the same opinion as you. *They usually don't ignore you.
I still consider myself somewhat of a newbie.
pug3323 03-16-2005, 12:01 PM I love that no one is mean on this board. Or rude about other's theories. mad snaps to all who post here!!! And for making new ppl feel welcome.. and helping along their addiction to this board. .haha, no really. im addicted! already. Ill be going thru withdrawal this weekend! :(
yeah for awhile i was at this other lost board and NOBODY ever acknowledged me. I got tickd off and came here. that was the best move i could have made~ ;D
The same thing happened to me! Like they were to busy spamming the board to even read someone they didn't knows opinion. And I also came on over here... And btw Ophelia -- you have almost 3000 posts now! Bravo and Viva la Fuselage! ;)
sifichick 03-16-2005, 01:13 PM I don't take it personal either. I just hate it when people think their poo doesn't stink. Let's face it at one time or another all of us have had poo that stunk. This goes for older posters as well as newbies.
So why completely ignore someone? What does it accomplish? Seriously people. (Not that this happens here. I've been nothing but welcomed here.)
Ms Demeaner 03-16-2005, 02:18 PM I don't think the word itself has a negative connotation. However, the tone in which the word is used can be negative, as in the instance of the post I linked.
I think overall that this board is very respectful, which is why I figured we could discuss this without insulting anyone. Technically, I would consider myself a newbie by the number of posts I have. However, I did lurk on this board for quite a while before I got gutsy enough to jump in the fray. So I guess I understand both sides of the argument. There are some common newbie mistakes made, and there are ways to say so without being mean, and sometimes the number of posts is not indicative of how long someone has been coming to a board.
I do agree that some longtime posters, or those with many many posts, do have an elitist attitude toward newbies, but not all.
Armenian_Jedi 03-16-2005, 02:42 PM OK I went to that thread... and after posting at the star wars message board since 2003, that thread is nothing. I've seen debates go to the point of racial slurs being spit out against black users and some against me as well. I've seen people threaten other people's lives.
Anyway, in regards to the poll, I voted no. I can tell you for a fact that after posting on over 10 message boards in the past few years, newbie is not a deragattory word. However noob and n00b are.
Nanse 03-16-2005, 04:19 PM I voted no because in the forums I frequent, Newbie is not used as a demeaning term. In some cases I've actually seen it used closer to a term of endearment, as in someone taking a "newbie" under their wing.
That said, It definitely can be used as a derogatory name, and has been in many boards over the internet. I think with the diversity of boards on the internet, it comes down to what the "culturally" accepted meaning is. Every forum is like it's own country so to speak. They each have their own rules of netiquette beyond the basics, and they have their own local lingo. Like any community certain commonly used words may take on a meaning unique to that group.
Here, like everyone said, the intention behind the use of newbie (at least for the vast majority of us) is benign. The community understanding of the word is not one that is negative or derogatory.
diabolo237 03-16-2005, 04:48 PM Um, the word newbie is usually used by someone who is a new poster to the boards. Most "old"bies dont refer to new people as newbies, but new people refer to themselves as newbies. Some new posters call themselves "lurkers". I dont think thats derogatory.
Werent we all once newbies and lurkers??
And I dont think anyone is bashing anyone here, just simply stating their opinions
I voted no
halfrek 03-16-2005, 04:57 PM it is really nice to come back to this thread and read all the nice things that some of you had to say about this board and your posting experiences here.
this site does try to maintain a nice atmosphere. at times it goes awry, but that is hopefully corrected quickly.
glad you all found this site and have become part of its community. :)
WhiteSapphire 03-16-2005, 05:25 PM *cheers for newbies*
