View Full Version : Anagrams?
Cardielost 02-07-2008, 10:20 PM I was wondering if Miles' name was a play on the huge Scandinavian whirlpools that can suck down ships. Maelstroms are very common in video and MMORPG games as well.
Of course, what this has to do with a ghostbuster with a dustbuster, I have no idea.

ortiz34 02-07-2008, 10:32 PM absolutely...
coupons 02-07-2008, 10:40 PM perhaps a Poe reference http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/eapoe/bl-eapoe-descent.htm (http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/eapoe/bl-eapoe-descent.htm)
Trixired 02-07-2008, 10:43 PM Wow...good catch. We all know how the writers love to throw in twist and play on words and this epi is full of them. I'm glad someone caught his last name. Was going to have to double check tomorrow after work. Nice going
lockesmithe 02-07-2008, 10:44 PM a ghostbuster with a dustbusterBest line of the night, although Sawyer had a few good ones tonight as well.
Maelstrom--seems like a pretty good guess.
Cardielost 02-07-2008, 10:45 PM Wow...good catch. We all know how the writers love to throw in twist and play on words and this epi is full of them. I'm glad someone caught his last name. Was going to have to double check tomorrow after work. Nice going
Thanks, but I'm not quite that quick-witted. I saw the character's full name in the press release and so have had a while to figure out why it sounded like such an odd name.

Bella 02-07-2008, 10:46 PM Wow, cool little nugget of there that I hadn't noticed.
Kate731 02-07-2008, 10:54 PM Neat, I would never have noticed that.
(Actually, I just spent several minutes looking up Maelstroms on google. They don't appear to be quite as cool in reality as they look in the movies, but still, very neat phenomenon.)
UnderAlienControl 02-07-2008, 11:06 PM To me, Straum or -Strom sounding names always had a psychic vibe or feel to them. Probably from Helstromism http://www.43things.com/entries/view/1173956 and the Marvel Comic character Daimon Hellstrom-The Son of Satan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daimon_Hellstrom...(<>..<>)
lostmio 02-07-2008, 11:17 PM Thanks for that, Cardie. I was scratching my head over the Straum. It makes sense.
I loved the fakeout with the dustbuster, turns out it was just to cause enough noise to cover his conversation and his rear.. I had been worried for a few minutes that they wanted me to belive that gizmo was real..
UnderAlienControl 02-08-2008, 12:10 AM Exactly what I said about the Ghostbuster dustbuster, just a prop but of course my skeptical friend thinks it's for real. I pointed out that he didn't have it with him on the island-just a prop to make the scam work better, thats all...And speaking again of Hellstromism, couldn't it be said that in a way, Miles practices it? I know he isn't physically led to the hidden item, like say Kreskin or Criss Angel, but he is psychically led to the hidden item, such as the cash/drugs... (<>..<>)
james_sawyer 02-08-2008, 02:42 AM Did anyone figure out if any of the "freighties" names are anagrams for anything?
lostchild 02-08-2008, 03:08 AM okay;
played around with a few things, nothing is gospel. Just musing.
If Miles' last name is spelled STROM,
the best one I found, you can make "me mole sstr" hahaha. It doesn't really work, but I got excited for a second.
if you spell his last name STRAUM,
I got "Me altruism". Which I found somewhat thought provoking, considering the meaning of altruistic.
here's the dictionary definition:
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/altruism
see both entries 1 and 2. It's kind of cool.
DANIEL FARADAY:
"An afraid delay" (hmm?? I don't know. you could read into this, I guess)
Aye Land Afraid (I found it interesting that the first word, though spelled inaccurately, comes together with "land" and creates "island" )
FRANK LAPIDUS;
I got nothing. Though you can make "drunk" out of his name, with a few other nonsense words.???
CHARLOTTE STAPLES LEWIS:
a bunch of people have already commented that charlotte's initials are C.S. Lewis.
So I think that's probably the "trick" to her name.
I don't know. maybe somebody who's better at these can help more. but I thought I'd throw my two cents in. I love trying to find anagrams everywhere! haha!
rebelscum 02-08-2008, 04:18 PM Surely its not a coincidince that Charlotte Staples Lewis is a perfect anagram of Steals Walts Helicopter.
opens up all sorts of possible speculation and theories
It's true. I've long suspected that Walt has not really grown, but has, rather, been standing on a helicopter.
Heroic Poser 02-08-2008, 04:30 PM Speculations that Walt is now missing a helicopter?
xanthateto 02-08-2008, 04:35 PM It's true. I've long suspected that Walt has not really grown, but has, rather, been standing on a helicopter.
Dear God I love you.
That is very interesting, but I'm not as convinced of it as I might be. It's already a very similar name to CS Lewis (Charlotte Staples Lewis, Clive Staples Lewis), so for that to be true it would be a pretty large coincidence that the name 'Charlotte', added to 'Staples Lewis' with nothing else makes 'Steals Walt's Helicopter'. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a giant hole in that logic, but the way I see it there is at least one coincidence in that - either that the anagram exists, or it can be made with one change to a famous name.
You know what, screw that, it probably is a clue to something.
lowclass 02-08-2008, 04:43 PM no apostrophe
therefore im not buying
jennylee27 02-21-2008, 12:06 PM Cardie wins!
DAMON LINDELOF: With Miles Straum, we just thought it would be cool if his name sounded like ''maelstrom.''
From the new EW interview with Darlton.

frontsidefish 02-21-2008, 01:38 PM Wow, very good. I knew there was something strange about that name... and not just that it's an anagram of Realist's Mum. Thanks for that.
By the way, I think there's a big hint in Frank Lapidus' name: Panda Flu Risk!!!
Cardielost 02-21-2008, 02:46 PM Yay, I score. Usually when I come up with these things, I'm wrong or else the 100th person to think of it.
Cardie
jennylee27 02-21-2008, 02:53 PM It does feel good to be right, doesn't it? Good job!
Wish You Were Here 02-22-2008, 05:52 AM By the way, I think there's a big hint in Frank Lapidus' name: Panda Flu Risk!!!
Personally, I'm a fan of Fraud Pa Links.

It can also stand for Walt Steals Helicopters. there is another thread where that someone brings this up. Interesting because Walt also set the raft on fire.
