First of all, I am going absolutely crazy because Lost is not on this week. Withdrawal is tough. So, no wonder I'm acting weird. And why in the world I had this idea with this poll doesn't have much logic behind it. Well, there is some explanation.

1. So far, most of the profiles I looked at were profiles of females. And then I thought, "Is there any reason for that? Coincidence? Or is the majority of users are females? Then, if the second is true. Does it mean that mostly females are watching the show?"
2. It's often impossible to tell by the nickname if you are male or female. So I thought about the poll.

I think there was something else. But oh well, that's me. Goes in one ear, goes out of the other one right away. Maybe I'll remember later.

So far the thesis is easy to support. 8 females, 1 male. Why do you think that is?

and, by the way, who are those ~7-8 people who checked the topic but didn't vote... :innocent:

Yeah, so far it's overwhelmingly female. Why is that? Is the majority of the audience female or is it just that females are more active on the message board?

You always hear that it's the guys who are always spending their time online and stuff... but oddly, I tend to run into more girls than guys... hmmm

yea, most websites I go to are mostly female. we just hide the fact that we're internet geeks better while in the real world than guys do.

mostly female cause that's the way speaker likes it... LOL
:P ;) ;D

Maybe it has to do with the ratio of hot guys to hot girls on the show... there's what- 8 hot guys and 4 hot girls, so more women are attracted to this show ? ???
hmmm....

good point Meta, but I find that it's not only here... take the place I rp for instance... 5 guys to like 9 or 10 girls... and only 4 of the guys are frequent (and they're not even that frequent.. lol)

OK,

Well to add my two cents...

I think that I vaguely remember hearing in my Psychological Statistics class, that women are more likely to respond to surveys. I'm not sure about this, but I will look into it eventually. I really don't know why it is that there seems to be more females than males in general on the board, regardless of this survey. I've seen the basic overall ratings, but now I wonder about the demos. I mean is there an overwhelming majority of female LOST fans in general, or does this board represent a skewed sampling of fans? (OK, I know we are skewed, but I meant in a demographical sense.) Yep, yet another wacky thought process of mine, that's probably going to lead to me doing some pointless research-lol.

P.S. Don't mind me if I don't make any sense... this is why I shouldn't post when sleep deprived.

Male to Female Ratio: 1:4

And THAT'S why I dig this board! I don't mind being outnumbered by women, yowza!

Comin' from a predominanatly female family I guess I'm used to it. And my but there are some cute wimmenz here.

*wonders if that will actually sway anyone*

Why else would I put a cute bunny as my avatar?

Even if he does have pancakes on his head.

Viva Lost!

Yes.....it was my command and wish that we guys be outnumbered so. BWA HA HA HA HA!!!!

The reasons are simple.

Half of us weren't listening and the other half are waiting for directions on how to fill out the poll.

**looks down** I am most deffinately female. Lost is so like the LOTR fandom, at least 80% female.

According to the Fuselage Board Stats, there is a 1:4 male to female ratio of members who report their gender.

Maybe it's because the most recognizable person in the cast just happens to be male and he also happens to have a large fandom? There may be more of us registered, but I would bet most are still On The Tarmac or just Baggage (insert joke here). :P

Toonces may be on to something here-- a lot of fleeting fans, here and there... maybe we ought to check the sex ratio of the top 100 posters instead? Since I happen to notice that there are a lot of boys who post excessively regularly here...

And as for the whole girl-to-guys ratio on the show complementing the guy-to-girl ratio in the fandom... I'm female, but who says I started watching LOST because of a guy? ;)

Toonces-

You mean Vincent right?

Funny story.... "He's" played by an actress!

interesting statistics...but probably pretty accurate.

ISTR that at the Buffy parties that there were A LOT of women.
and not so many men. ;)
studies have been made of this phenomenon.

also, i dont see a lot of guys complaining about the odds.
they just like having a wider variety from which to choose.

OK, this may be off the wall, but what if it has nothing to do with the show itself, but rather the proximity to computers? I'd say on average more women have jobs that put them in front of a computer than men. Just thinkin' out loud here.

Smidge, I think this is a good possibility. Maybe not the main reason itself, but definitely a correlation.

I remember reading somewhere that most boards and chat rooms have more women than men. They said it had something to do with the fact that women like to communicate more.

You know. More chatty.

The opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the poster. ;D

Female here, by the way.

Speaker
11-30-2004, 04:17 PM
what are you saying about chatty men!?

Actually that makes sense...I keep up with message boards and journals and such and my wife doesn't.....and SHE wears the pants in our relationship!

IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW!

though i think those numbers could be wrong.* i know a lot of men in high tech jobs that spend a lot to time
with computers, in addition to those who do paperwork.* * the only profession that i know of that
does NOT regularly have internet access are those in healthcare.* the stupid hospitals monitor
that like hawks.* (this i know b/c i used to work in a hosp. lab)

OTOH, i like the chatty men theory.* ;D

In study after study, women are the overwhelming majority on most online message boards. Women online tend to gravitate toward communities more than random surfing. And just from anecdotal experience, women make up the vast majority of online media fandom in general, excepting possibly wrestling and Star Trek.
