I think the monster is a creation by the others, to keep the survivors from the forest. Scare them off, so they wont investigate. That is why we havenīt seen it latley......its work is done.

I agree, the noises sound really like a mechanical stuff. I think it was Lindelof who said that the "monster" was a sort of a reflexion of yourself. We could think about some mystical metaphor, but it also could be a mere piece of metal reflecting your image.
